When I was finishing college after my military time, I was in a dorm and there was a pay phone in the hall. My friend would call home every week. ( no cell phones yet - this was 53 years ago ). He borrowed my small tape recorder to copy the sound of the coins going in the slots and the sound they make as they fall into the phone. Next phone call when the operator tells him how much - always the same for this call, he would push play and the operator would hear the coins dropping in.

It's sad but there's a lot of deserted buildings all around Thailand; broken dreams, bad planning, money laundering, disasters like fires. Yeah "dude" some one lives there, you're walking into their house after saying "I hope I don't get shot!" because THAT is how you get shot. The bus stop isn't great but, it's not so bad either. No, that wasn't a "skate rink" it was an arcade. I'd say (after living in Chiang Mai for about 15 years) the worst part is around Siping Muang road, a lot of violence and craziness in the all Thai bars.

The Chinese (ethnics that own everything) are strange like that. They would rather sit on land or a building or an apartment for years with no rent rather than sell for less than they think their peers would sell for. It's a face matter.
