Chibnall isnt a bad writer, he's a bad sci-fi writer, Broadchurch is absolutely outstanding, idk why they appointed a man for a sci-fi showrunner who is incapable of writing anything with aliens in it

The best way I’ve described Chibnall and his writing is he can tell people stories. He’s got enough characterization and can be grounded in reality. Sci-fi isn’t fully his wheelhouse guaranteed but every writer has a trope to dislike in their stories. People just have turned the tension higher because what they BELIEVE they want isn’t present any more in their favorite Doctor Who episodes.

At 17:30 when our boy finally addresses the Chinball trope "the humans were the monsters all along"....ahhh....i feel better now
@irrevenant87244 жыл бұрын
Chibnall's trope is a fair bit more nuanced than that. It's more that both humans and aliens are *people* and you'll find good, bad, and in-between in both groups. The "Cold Blood" two-parter probably best shows this, but "42" also showed a conflict between humans and aliens where both had sympathetic motives. And personally I find it a bit sad that "aliens are two-dimensional individuals" is considered "the Chibnall trope" rather than something we see all the time from a variety of different writers and showrunners. :(
@samuelbarber61774 жыл бұрын
I think the reason this turned out so well was that Chibnall didn’t force himself into adding aliens for no reason. I heard Broadchurch was good, and that’s likely because Chibnall works best when his stories are based in reality without sci-fi stuff cluttering the story. He’s best on a leash. When you give him a story like this, he can work with that. When you give him access to Doctor Who, he just throws everything and the kitchen sink into the script. That was something that held episodes like Can You Hear Me back.

@@Dr3Mc3Ninja I think he just needs someone above him to say: “Hey, how about, instead of throwing this idea in, you save that for a later story, and focus on the already complex plot and characters you have.” This isn’t another adaptation of Les Mis, you don’t have to bring in twelve new characters. That was the issue with Can You Hear Me? It was first a story about mental health and the characters’ psyche through the means of an existential, Lovecraftian deity that cares not for human affairs, but then we throw in Aleppo, and Ryan’s friend, and another God through a third act twist, it had enough story to be a two parter... like most of Chibnall’s stories, now I think about it... maybe he just needs to write two-parters because in my opinion, Cold Blood from Series 5 was actually pretty good... But definitely, his more grounded writing is his best work. Cold Blood didn’t go for the ‘high-concept sci-fi’ like other stories of his do, so maybe that’s why that was actually pretty good... I think the differences between the three new who show runners comes down to how they view humanity. Davis is optimistic but realistic, people are good at heart but deeply flawed. It gives him a very grounded feeling and there's always hope even if it's sometimes hard to see. Moffat is very, very optimistic, people are good and deserve the best, they just need to see it with in themselves. It helps with the fairy tale tone of his run and is also why many of his villains aren't really villains and nobody really dies. Even in the most bleak situation I don't think hope is ever really lost for Moffat. Chibnall though... he's very pessimistic. It doesn't matter how hard you try or what you do, you have to do better. All of the 'good' characters are shells of people because he knows they have to be good but I don't think he really believes anybody truly can be. I think that's why he wrote the Doctor to be so special. As if to say, only one in a million billion people can be good, truly good. It's a bleak worldview that's fundamentally opposed to the core of the show.
@tomnorton42772 жыл бұрын
Moffat can be kind of difficult to figure out because Peter Capaldi's Doctor was almost sociopathic in Season 8. The social awkwardness of Matt Smith was charming, showing him being not fully connected to humans but not distancing himself either. It was like watching someone on the autism spectrum. Then you transition to Capaldi outright throwing Clara to the wolves TWICE, belittling her countless times, gaslighting her about stuff that he's perfectly willing to do himself, and projecting his own flaws onto her. That's not mere social awkwardness, that's like watching an abusive relationship. By the time Capaldi finally pulled himself together in Dark Water, after Clara gave him a well deserved taste of his own medicine (which, naturally, the asshole whined about before projecting his own whining onto her), I was firmly in the mindset of "This shitbag isn't the Doctor". Even after he agreed to "Go to Hell" for Clara's sake and Missy helped him remember who he was, I didn't see Capaldi as a legitimate incarnation until The Zygon Inversion. I wish Moffat had either swapped Capaldi with John Hurt or straight up called Capaldi the Valeyard and had him grow into the Doctor from there. Capaldi's habit of gaslighting and projecting fits perfectly with the Valeyard, who outright blamed Colin Baker (criminally underrated Doctor by the way) for Peri's death, plus he's at a perfect point in the Doctor's timeline because Anthony Ainley's Master confirmed that the Valeyard is "somewhere between your twelfth and final incarnation". Thanks to John Hurt's Doctor, Matt Smith is the 12th incarnation so you can easily slot the Valeyard into Season 8 and then turn him into the Doctor in Season 9. Michael Jayston's "amalgamation" from the Trial of a Time Lord arc can be explained by his Valeyard being a "spin-off" incarnation of Capaldi like the Dream Lord was a "spin-off" of Smith.

Their relationship largely developed out of trauma from the job (as seen in Cyberwoman and Countrycide), which they then used as an excuse for what they were doing. It's supposed to be wrong, but you're also supposed to see how Gwen is losing a support system and how difficult it is to have relationships outside of Torchwood. I think it worked for me because they spent time adding a human element to their relationship, so it wasn't just sexual tension, but the need for a distraction based on what Owen and Gwen were going through in Torchwood (Countrycide in particular did a good job pointing this out). Undoubtedly it was immoral, and I don't blame people for saying it made them both look bad or didn't get resolved well. But it was supposed to show more of their characters.

I remember watching this episode while I alone in my house (I think at night) on BBC America for the first time. And that I think that atmosphere definitely added to everything while I was watching it. And even though people tend to think this is the *only* "great" episode of "Torchwood" (while it is really great), (as unpopular as this is) I loved Series One of "Torchwood" (not just for this episode) and I prefer it to Series 2. I mean, I don't hate Series 2. I just love Series 1 more. And obviously "Children of Earth " is amazing (to me that goes without saying). But yeah, to me Series One had a lot of *great* episodes like "Everything Changes", "Cyberwoman", "Countrycide", "They Keep Killing Susie" and "Captain Jack Harkness". But maybe that's just me. 😕🤷♀️

One of The best episodes overall. My only complaint is that it seemed the end might have gotten cut short for length reasons? Would have liked a scene with Ianto and basically anyone from the team. From what we got thy just left him sitting all by himself in the back of the car... I think he could use some company after all the trauma. 🤔 But the rest is perfect. Just rewatched it yesterday.

Great video as always man! I think calling it a "masterpiece" is a bit much... it's a good episode, and certainly one of, if not the best thing Chibnall's written in the Torchwood/Doctor Who universe but if you've watched a lot of horror, this episode feels a little un-original. I'm also not a fan of the whole Gwen Owen affair thing. I get what they were going for with trying to make it "understandable" by showing how Torchwood changed her and made her feel she needed to be with someone who understood it's world ect... But in practice I feel it added little to to show and just made me really dislike Gwen, which is not ideal, since she's arguably the main character of the show. And to a lesser extent made me dislike Owen too, though it fit his character since his whole thing is being a lovable ratty scumbag haha. I actually much preferred the sexual tension between Owen and Tosh later in the series, Their dynamic was interesting and it honestly felt tragic at the end of the show when they (SPOILERS) died never really being able to be together ...

This episode SCARED the hell outta me. I'm surprised it was made by chibnall actually. This episode is actually my personal favourite Torchwood episode because of the fact it tricks you into thinking it's a savage alien that hunts it's prey when really it's the distorted mind of humanity
@xlinnaeus3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this is the best Chibnall episode ever. Fantastic twist. Sometimes humans are more monsterous than any alien. This expectation leads the TW team to almost being in denial. The real thematic challenge is to their impression of humanity itself. What an awesome story!

Maybe its just me, but Gwen cheating on Rys is one of the main reasons I can't stand her as a character. It could be my virgin brain speaking but I just don't understand why she had to have sex with Owen in order to "share" her experience in Torchwood. What happened to just talking? Friendly sleepovers no longer a thing? Even going out for a coffee or a drink? I highly doubt she and Owen conversed about Torchwood while in the middle of the act, so I don't understand why she so desperately needed it. She could have talked to anyone on the Torchwood team, especially Jack, but instead chooses to betray Rhys, her long term partner, and for what? Torchwood related intimacy? Yes, Rhys and Owen are on opposite sides of her life, but is sex some sort of integral bridge that HAS to be used as a means of sharing her experience with aliens? I find it to be a very weak excuse just so she can bonk Owen. She should have broken up with Rhys if she wanted to sleep with Owen, it's as simple as that. And the fact that she continues to lie to Rhys, eventually marrying him and having a child, just makes this deception all the more irritating. Build up of tension or not, I find it very hard to rationalise this decision, even after your explanation in this video. Cheating is such a deep betrayal of trust and Gwen never faces the consequences for her actions, which could have at least made her choice to cheat addressed for what it is: reprehensible and wrong. But it isn't and she gets away with it, at Rhys' expense. It's so wrong.

I'm gonna bat for Chibnall here. I don't think he's a good fit for Dr Who, and I don't think that's his fault. Some writers are better at different things, and I think Chibnell has always struggled with the scale that Doctor Who tries to go for. He's just not a good fit for Dr Who, and I don't believe that's entirely his fault. Given how down to earth Countrycide was an how limited it was in terms of cast and location, I get the impression Chibby felt more at home on this type of thing
