One tip for ordering at Starbucks with your own cup: if you go through the drive thru, the baristas are usually already preparing your order as you’re saying it. A lot of times customers wait until the end of their order to let us know they have a personal cup, all the while we prepared it normally and end up wasting a cup anyway. It helps to lead with saying you have a personal cup if you want to avoid a plastic one being used.

Great start! Here are some Products that I’ve switched to that have totally changed my life: - Stasher bags: 100% worth the price upgrade. A much better ziplock replacement. - reusable cotton wipes: great for makeup and toners, but I also use them for nail polish. Once done throw them in the wash et voila! - Marleys Monsters Unpaper towels: we’ve been paper towel-Free for a year and these are great. - charcoal sticks: a great way to purify water: (brita et al are made with plastic) + their compostable - speaking of compost, do it! The soil that would come from your compost would do wonders for your garden! - plant paper toilette paper: MAJOR upgrade. Tradition toilet paper is a major cause or deforestation + all the chemicals that go into it to make it white. This toilette paper is made from fast growing grass. I hope one day they’ll go tubeless but still a better choice than tradition paper. - you may hate these but: telling some/most brands to stop sending you PR packages + the elimination of fast fashion from your closet would help amazingly. Anyway, I’ll get off my soapbox now but so happy you’re using your large platform to talk about this subject!

"Its not about a few people doing zero waste perfectly, its about millions of people doing zero waste imperfectly" A tip is to also think outside of the box: using vinegar and water instead of buying a bunch of cleaners, not using cotton rounds, cut up face clothes instead, not using plastic silverware, buying refillable soaps, not using the small produce bags at the market, typically we wash veggies/fruit so just throw it in your basket as individuals, not buying plastic milk containers and instead buying cardboard ones. Remember glass is harder to recycle than plastic or aluminum as it takes much more energy to melt down glass. Hand cleaning the filters in your AC instead of buying new filters each year. Having a small countertop compost bin that you can empty in the garden once a week (coffee grounds, banana peels, orange peels, lemons etc.) If you really pay attention you will start to notice little changes that are so easy you'll smack yourself for not doing it sooner.

Just so you know, cardboard milk containers are lined with plastic (so the milk doesn't soak right through and break up the cardboard). So unless you go refill glass bottles from your local farm, it's much harder to do sustainable liquids from the grocery store. Your other tips are very helpful, though! I definitely advocate for diy cleaners (better for you AND the environment) and trying to make the smallest of things reusable, like the cotton rounds you talked about and plastic silverware, etc.

Just be careful with “biodegradable” and “compostable” plastics. The straws you were talking about and biodegradable plastic bags, etc don’t actually break down any faster than regular plastics and they end up in landfills anyway. The best option is a stainless steel or glass straw or if you want something disposable, paper straws! :)

For the reusable shopping bags, you actually have to use it for more than 131 times for it to be more eco friendly than a plastic bag considering the carbon footprints, the cost of materials and energy to make them. And I believe a lot of the reusable containers/straws is the same. With that being said, I think the most important thing is reuse stuff as much as you can, not getting stuff you don’t actually use all that much

This will get addicting for you fast lol. I decided about a year ago to try and live closer to a zero waste lifestyle. I’ve slowly started making changes here and there starting from the “easy” stuff like using reusable shopping bags, water bottle, silicone bags and food covers, etc. Then moving on to making my own laundry soap and line drying my clothes instead of using the dryer, buying dry goods in bulk instead of in plastic bags. I would love to compost as well but I’m not really in a position to do that yet where I live. Every step no matter how small is still a step in the right direction.

I try and limit my purchases to “3 purchases/month” etc!

Typically when rich people pretend they're eco-friendly, I scoff. When the Kylie Jenners come to pick up their sisters in their private jets, I can't help but be disgusted. But the disclaimer at the beginning of the video is great. It's important to distinguish yourself not as a spoke-person when you are the top percentage of American income, the most wasteful country on Earth. But to say that you want to change and try while admitting you are not the most eco-friendly person is honest and humble and lets your audience know that we can all be a little bit nicer to the Earth. A great reminder than Desi is not blind to the detriments of such a looks-based industry! Another note is that the BEST way to be eco-friendly is to NOT buy the latest thing all the time. Just stop buying things you don't need... and when you DO need something, buy the reusable, durable, sustainable kind. Some great makeup tips to be eco-friendly is to use reusable cotton pads that can be washed when removing makeup. If that's not your thing, then organic, unbleached cotton wipes are easier to break down or compost than regular ones. Don't dispose makeup containers. Places like Origins take all makeup containers to recycle! MAC takes 6 lipstick tubes when you're done to recycle and they give you a free lipgloss. For clothes, thrift or buy from sustainable brands and stop washing denim so often (ruins it anyway). Only 20% of thrift store clothes actually get purchased, and 80% of all textiles end up in landfills so it's best to repurpose or donate. It truly isn't being about zero-waste. It's very hard, usually exhausting, and most of the time unrealistic to be that way. But if everyone does a little something to help, this can really help the future.

I love the glass storage containers. They are beautiful and clean up so good, not to mention microwave and dishwasher safe. I will say this , I keep a box of butter containers, cool whip containers, etc for when we have Holiday parties or family get together where a lot of food is served. That way our family can take food home, I don't have to worry about getting my container back, & we're finding a use for those containers at the same time. My mom and siblings have started doing it as well so that they are being "recycled"... Also, the dryer balls... Even though it's biodegradable, I ball up foil and put it in the dryer. It's amazing for static and in place of dryer sheets. 😊 Not to mention a million times cheaper... 😂

Awesome choices, Desi. A few more things I've invested in recently: LastSwab, replaces q-tips, Reusable cotton pads, LastTissue, reusable tissues, and Leaf razors to get rid of the plastic never-ending razor refills.

Desi I’m loving the lifestyle/home videos, you’re such an influence to us! I have a couple of requests. First I NEED your whole outfit. Can you share where you got it from? It looks so cozy and comfy. Second can you please do an update on your Perkins Produce? I want to start planting some veggies and fruits and would love some tips and guidance on how to get it started. Thank you 🥰🥰

I've been trying for awhile now to use eco friendly products. I'm no expert but feels good to help out & most importantly to teach my children. Have you guys heard of shampoo that's in a bar of soap form? Pretty cool waaay less plastic being thrown out if you make the switch...

I appreciate the effort. 1 thing I’d like to say, YOU DO NOT NEED TO BUY NEW THINGS TO LOWER YOUR WASTE. I know the green washing of the ‘zero waste’ movement is tempting for the aesthetic but think before you buy. Chances are, you already own something that can accomplish the job of what you need a new item for.
