Chicago Church Becomes a Home for a Music Lover

Tim Gray’s living room was once lined with pews. Today, this renovated church turned home from 1920 has an open-concept lounge feel with exposed timbers and pops of rich color. With the help of designer Dan Rak, who found inspiration in Gray’s love of music and the building’s history, life is echoing off the soaring ceilings again.

I like that the designer really took the time to understand the architecture of the building. He kept it simple but it was dramatic in a good way. I love how the designer used textural fabric, bright colored furniture, and clean lines to accentuate all of the interesting and unique characteristics of the church. The beams above the bed we're well placed but make a dramatic impact and really look good!

I used to go to a church that’s right next to Logan Square. The neighborhood has really changed and it’s now considered to be a very trendy neighborhood. You have a very beautiful home, after it’s safe to visit Chicago, I’d love to see your home, even if it’s only from the outside. By the way, I’m a Chicago girl who now lives in Downey, California. You can take the girl out of Chicago, but you can never take Chicago out of the girl. I’d move back in a heartbeat, but it’s the snow that keeps me away. ❤️❤️

Inspiring on so many levels! The beautiful shot video with all the drone footage, the editing and vivid colors, the project in itself with the cool style and ideas, the creative and perfect new purpose of this building, the way the architect worked with the client getting to know him and getting him out of his comfort zone as well as hitting the nail on the head with finding his style, how he now uses his house almost as an event venue and seeing his passion and that he’s so happy there as well. Seems to be the perfect case scenario when it comes to an architectal project!

The colors reminds me of the Brady Bunch colors in the kitchen and living room, but modern touches! Orange, mustard, avocado and brown timeless mix of colors.

STUNNING. Best church conversion to a residence I’ve seen, and I’ve seen quite a few, it was always a dream of mine. Dan Rak, you did an absolutely amazing job on the design and working with the customer. I’ll have to check out the link to see more of the process. It would have had some stained glass once upon a time, but perhaps that was lost or extracted and sold during the prior renovations.

I like the fact that churches are being repurposed into recording studios, apartments, community center etc. and not left to “die” after not being used as a church anymore. But honestly I’m not sure if I would like to live in what once was a church. - house of God - even if the it was redesigned as something stunning as this church/house. Even though I consider myself to Cultural Christian, I still think I would be somewhat God Fearing and not behave as I normally would in a “normal “apartment or house

Yeah um it’s not really the power of a good designer, who would be able to entice you to buy coloured seating, a comfortable sofa, lamps and get you off the bar stool. Any house proud girlfriend would probably do the same. The place looks great tho.
