This resulted in a one-game suspension and a $1K fine for Dawson. He paid the fine with a check, and on the check memo line wrote "donation to the blind." For that alone he deserved his place in the HOF.

If you never got to see Andre Dawson play right field, you missed one of the greatest. He also had an absolute cannon for an arm. Dawson won 8 Gold Glove awards. He hit .279 in his career with 2,774 hits, 438 home runs, 1591 RBI, 314 stolen bases, and won the 1987 NL MVP for the Cubs on a last place team. Dawson is one of only five players to notch 500 doubles, 400 home runs and 300 stolen bases in his career. A list that inclues: Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Carlos Beltran and Willie Mays. He was inducted into the HOF in 2010.

half those you listed were known PED users!
@simplygu8 жыл бұрын
If you look at Barry Bonds season by season stats, it's obvious he did not start using until the 2000 season or maybe even 2001. For argument sake, let's say 2000. So Bonds' stats thru 1999: 423 doubles, 445 home runs, 460 stolen bases. He played 7 more seasons after 1999 so with or without PED's he would have gotten 77 more doubles to reach 500. Thus, he definitely deserves to be on this list. That leaves only A. Rod. In my opinion, Bonds should be in the Hall of Fame. His numbers pre PED are HOF worthy, and he was the best player in the Majors for a decade. He won 3 MVP's before touching anything illegal (1990, 1992, 1993)... and he should have won NL MVP in 1991 as well which would have given him 4 straight MVP's. Writers voted the MVP to Terry Pendleton in 1991... .319 22 HR 86 RBI 94 Runs 10 Stolen Bases 43 Walks .363 OBP .517 SLG. Meanwhile Bonds in 1991: .292 25 HR 116 RBI 95 Runs 43 Stolen Bases 107 Walks .410 OBP(led NL) .514 SLG. Bonds' Pirates won 98 games, Pendleton's Braves won 94. Bonds won a Gold Glove, Pendleton did not! It's quite obvious who should have won NL MVP in 1991. All you have to do is look at Bonds 1990-1998 stats before he touched anything, and it is easy to see that he should be in the HOF.

I love Harry's old school announcing. Instead of deploring Andre's actions in a modern PC style, he's screaming "And the CROWD LOVES IT!!!" while Dawson's tossing bats out of the dugout.
@aroliardi112 жыл бұрын
My dad took me to this game when I was 11 years old. I sat behind the Cubs dugout in the 200 level equidistant to 3rd base. I remember just seeing bats fly out after #8 was thrown out and will never forget it. Also remember when Dibble threw at Dascenzo and felt like the crowd was going to riot. This game along with the Kerry Wood 20 strikeout game I attended made it impossible for me not to be a Cub fan. Fans of other teams can scoff, a game at Wrigley Field can rarely be matched. WTNY!

You're right; he and the Reds had just won the World Series (4-game sweep over Oakland) the year before, in 1990. And yet he won two Central Division titles with the Cubs in his first two years managing them.

I watched this game, he got tossed because he deliberately threw the ball at the batter Doug Discenzo as he was running towards first base. I thought it was deliberate right away and if you had another look at a different angle they showed on a replay that night you could see that Dibble was not trying to throw him out, he was clearly throwing it at him. Not sure why but it was obvious.
