Elegantly delivered as always Pete. Love your calm discipline and feel. I had to master this bass groove back in 1978 when I played in a local youth big band. The bandleader was the Australian jazz trumpeter/composer James Morrison. He was very picky about the syncopation and harmony our rhythm section. It was a bit of a nightmare getting the songs right.
@basscoverpete2 жыл бұрын
Hi Joh331, what a wonderful comment, thank you! Syncopation: great stuff for a rhythm section. I hope you had a good drummer, that helps a lot 😉. When I play an (improvised) solo I always use syncopation. Getting the songs right: I agree, it sometimes is a nightmare, but the satisfaction is high when you get it right. There’s nothing compared to that feeling when you get things right after hours and hours of practice! Greetz from the Netherlands, Pete

@@basscoverpete Greetings from Sydney Australia. You're a Dutchman ! Fantastic! My very first bass and guitar teacher as a child was famous Netherlands-born Jazz musician called Hans Tasseron. He was a musical Superman to me. he could read, write and play any music. He drilled into me the importance of timing, discipline, restrained harmony and the need for repetition to achieve refinement. Very Dutch, very cultured and very practical advice I use every day. Keep up your marvellous work Pete.

Hey Pete ! Just finished learning Does anybody really know what time it is. Your video and transcription was superb, I’m just amazed at your economy of motion in left hand I really studied and practicing this in small increments which made playing and learning this song much better.By the way Peter Cetera is very under rated bass player

Hi Ron! Glad you enjoy my video’s, it’s a pleasure to do and very satisfying when people like you are this glad with the video and transcription. Peter Cetera is certainly one of my favorite bassplayers. He plays very melodic, but also with fantastic rhythmic changes. I think that most people see him as a good singer (which he is) and than the bass comes in the backrow…. Greetz! Pete

Does Cetera really play those 8ths on the chorus? It has a bit of that feel for sure but I think it's really mostly walking quarters.
@basscoverpete Жыл бұрын
Hi Gary, I'm sure that he plays 8ths in the chorus. But it's a triplet feel in playing the 8th notes. So you don't hear 'straight' 8ths. But it's more that you play the first and third note of a triplet. In this way you play the first note of the triplet longer than the third note of the triplet. This gives the jazzy sound of the groove, where the accent lies more in the first note of the triplet and you just give a little accent on the third note of the triplet. I hope this will explanation will help you. Greetings from the Netherlands and thanks for your question. Pete
@bassfiddlesteve Жыл бұрын
You can hear what Peter Cetera originally played here. I think some of the 8th notes are actually the bass drum: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y52Tan-uobidfcU
