Yes most definitely. I know I'm minority here but did not care for Shiffs' voice @ all. He seemed to struggle to reach higher notes early on & only got worse every year. His voice didn't fit in with Chicago. When I finally got to see Chicago in person( took me a long time) It was a new tenor,Neil. I guess I liked him but sorry I didn't get to see Jeff Coffey. I've been researching Chicago & there is lots of material but I came away feeling Chicago is a band with huge egos & when a member leaves, it's like they're easily disposed of & not spoken to again. A lot of big egos & perhaps abit of bullying & meanness in the mix. Their reputation isn't exactly stellar. I'm listening to the Russian tribute band ...they seem to like each other.

Nobody can replace the original Singer , Peter Cetara . With that said as a band you move on and many bands have with different lead singers. It’s life . People part because of differences as Cetara did way back, so he’s been gone for many years and Chicago moved on as great bands do. I had the privilege of seeing the whole band together except for Terry Kath I. The early Eighties and they were Fantastic so I’m sure they still have that same mix of great original and new Musicians playing those great songs of yesterday.

Cetera was willing to attend Rock Hall of Fame Induction if they'd lower the key of 25 or 6 to 4, which they refused to do - the primary reason he decided to boycott the event. Ironically, here's Chicago featuring Jeff Coffey doing Peter's most successful Chicago composition IN A LOWER KEY. Yeah, I know what you're thinking - 25 or 6 to 4 would have required JP to transpose the horn arrangement - a far more complicated task than dropping If You Leave Me Now a whole step. Well....how soon everyone forgets that Chicago have already done a remake of 25 or 6 to 4 on Chicago 18, Jason's 1st album with the band. While the key is A, the original, the remake has a completely different arrangement including the horns. Pankow could have re-written the 3 horn parts in Cetera's preferred key of E in his sleep....then he, Walt, and Lee could have worked it out in 10 minutes. I know Peter came off like a big baby but he was just trying to avoid humiliating himself by agreeing to sing a song that 45 years later is too high for him to sing comfortably.
@jonv167 жыл бұрын
It would have sounded like "the big note version" with the horns that low. Also, is it that trivial to tell the guitar soloist to play his intricate solo that he has played every night for years down a fourth?
@MillerGenuineDraft19807 жыл бұрын
That is totally true another obvious option is for them to have agreed to do another song. I mean Chicago had a ton of hits and im sure Cetera can sing a few of them in the original key. 25 Or 6 To 4 has been performed live by Chicago millions of times over. It could have easily been a different song nobody would have gave a shit.I dont blame Cetera at all for his choice and at the end of the day does it really mean dick all to anyone.

I find it very interesting that when Peter was in the band back in the 70's and 80's and he wrote and sang these ballads the others in the band criticized him for softening their sound. They are still singing and playing Peter's songs today while on tour. Seems somewhat hypocritical to me!

Well, he's not Peter Cetera, but at least he sings on pitch, which is more than I can say for Scheff in the last 20 years. :( Good technique is the only way to keep up the kind of touring schedule they do year after year. Cetera always had it; Scheff never did. The sound quality isn't good enough on this recording for me to tell whether or not Coffey has it, but at least he's on pitch!!

I never minded Jason's voice on the albums (18 -XXXVI) and I never felt he was brought in to be a replica or duplicate of Pete, which was fine by me. I thought is album voice was great, out with Pete and in with Jason. I enjoyed many of his lead vocals on songs from 18 and forward. But I agree that his in-concert (live) voice was lacking when he sang the Pete tunes, just did not cut it for me. His voice for some reason did not translate well from studio to live performing. So when I read that that Jeff was replacing Jason, I was very intrigued. But after hearing a few tunes I'm not all that excited. His voice sounds like a real good, young Jason. I assume Chicago will be doing more touring than or making new albums, so why couldn't they have found a Pete clone? A young 20+ year old with a voice just like Pete's who could really do a bang up job on the Pete songs. I always felt that back in 85 the band should've gotten a Pete clone just for live performances and just let Bill and Bobby do all the lead vocals, would've really taken the band in a different direction. But back in 85 they were hot on heals of 16 and 17 which were both very much Pete-heavy lead vocal LPs and the mentality was to continue with that similar sound which was very successful. Show less
@PickettMusic8 жыл бұрын
I honestly thought Jason's work on 'Will You Still Love Me', 'If She Would Have Been Faithful' and 'What Kind of Man Would I Be' was stellar. And his work on other people's albums was phenomenal as well....to say nothing of his bass playing, which was first rate. I think he covered Cetera's work competently, and added his own mark to their continuing work in a great way ('All Roads Lead to You', 'Higher and Higher', 'etc.)

I like him as a singer, but the sound isn't quite right for Chicago, IMO. Great, talented guy...but I'm missing Scheff and Cetera.
@PickettMusic8 жыл бұрын
Uh....no. He's not. He's the best support Hootie and the Blowfish ever had, and certainly functional as a singer. But not a great sound for Chicago. Scheff was a better fit for this particular band, though I'm happy for Jeff to have found a gig like this. Scheff 'reaching for notes' (you do recognize the key of this performance has been lowered, right?) and somehow missing the mark by singing in falsetto--both in the studio and live--certainly gives me a clearer picture of your....uh....expertise though. Keep up the good work.
@PickettMusic8 жыл бұрын
lol...does your mom know you're off your meds? your comments show exactly how much you know about professional music and vocals...But keep trying. As stated, i like him alright as a vocalist and it's cool he got the gig but, no, not the best singer they've had (as per your assertion). And thanks for listening to the videos. Good luck with your own...uh...'music'.
@PickettMusic8 жыл бұрын
lol...Hey I just bought you counselling package to help you with the inferiority. Hang in there man. But regarding the topic at hand, it's cool to see Chicago still at it 50 years later. Lots of bands go through changes of style and sound and maybe this guy will be a part some next chapter in a very long history.
@PickettMusic8 жыл бұрын
I finally figured out who he kind of reminds me of. His voice is kind of Firehouse-y. And I'm actually a big fan of that singer too, but not for Chicago. It's a thinner, pingy kind of sound vs. the wider head-tones that Scheff and Cetera had, which is a signature of that band. And I'm listening to his pitch here and in other videos, which is not flawless, but that can happen live. 1 Thanks for the civility, but in actual fact...Chicago tenors sing head-tones (reinforced falsetto) to get that wide, smooth sound they have. A similar thing happened with Boston, when phenomenal singer, Fran Cosmo came in for Brad Delp. Fran had a thinner delivery vs. Brad's head-tones. Anyway...nice comparing ideas with you. It's great that this guy got the gig after working so hard, and he's competent, but not my idea of the best singer Chicago ever had.
