The Gold Coast Historic District is a historic district in Chicago, Illinois. Part of Chicago's Near North Side community area, it is roughly bounded by North Avenue, Lake Shore Drive, Oak Street, and Clark Street.
The Gold Coast neighborhood grew in the wake of the Great Chicago Fire. In 1882, millionaire Potter Palmer moved to the area from the Prairie Avenue neighborhood on the city's south side. He filled in a swampy area which later became Lake Shore Drive, and built the Palmer Mansion, a forty-two room castle-like structure designed by Henry Ives Cobb and Charles Sumner Frost. Other wealthy Chicagoans followed Potter into the neighborhood, which became one of the richest in Chicago.
In the late 1980s, the Gold Coast and neighboring Streeterville comprised the second most-affluent neighborhood in the United States, behind Manhattan's Upper East Side.[2] Today, the neighborhood is a mixture of mansions, row houses, and high-rise apartments. Highlights include the Astor Street District and the James Charnley House.
The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.[1][3]
The nearby East Lake Shore Drive District and parts of northern Streeterville and the Magnificent Mile near the lake also may be considered part of the Gold Coast (such as the area around the 860-880 Lake Shore Drive Apartments), even if not technically in the historic designation.[4] The mayor's office map extends the Gold Coast south to the area of Northwestern University's Chicago campus.
As of 2011, Gold Coast ranks as the seventh-richest urban neighborhood in the United States with a median household income of $153,358.[5]

Great tour Toon! I loved the mansion you showed us. I have visited Chicago before, and I really loved the city. Chicago has it's violence like every major city does but, it still is a really great place.

If their selling it, that's a telltale sign that things are really bad in Chicago. Many people are leaving that city because of the violence. If someone bought me that house, I'd never live in it because of that violent, uncontrollable city. I looked at most of the listings and nobody is going to spend millions of dollars in an unsafe city.

Chicago is relatively safe like most major cities with “violence” I think people focus on the headlines too much. The news is known just to cover the negative because that’s what sells and gets ratings. You’ll have a whole hour segment and just have 3 minutes if your lucky dedicated to positive in the city and the other 57 minutes will be highlighting the crime. Toxic negative stuff sells 🤣🤣🤣 Yes I do know Chicago has a lot of shooting even in broad daylight: like most major cities.... But I’m more then sure it’s not happening in front of these peoples mansion 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for sharing your thoughts. 😊🙌🏼 have a great day

@@TOON215 No it's not and don't kid yourself. I'm not here to get into polemical debate but it's democrat controlled which speak volumes. Say that when they over turn Roe v Wade. The police have had all their days off cancelled in anticipation of the violence to follow.

People love the stupid news. I know a couple people who moved to places like Indianapolis, New Orleans, etc and shocked when crime is just as bad (Indy) or 2 times worse. Hahaha

Sup buddy thanks for leaving a comment. Appreciate it... and nope unfortunately I didn’t hit either of those 2 places. It would of cost Atleast $200-$300+ extra for me to take the rv to each of those 2 places. That’s why I created this gofund me campaign and shared it back to back for over a month straight before I even left California to see if people would help support the cause going back east. But not many people supported it.... gofund.me/f818f306 This whole entire trip was out of pocket, it cost over $5100 in gas alone just to go from Philly to California. Not including what gas costs from California back to Philly. Not to mention west and tear, tolls, and vehicle repairs (I had a $4000 repair in Texas.) So yea man, no support dictated my travels on the way back. I hit every state on the way back but I kept it simple. 😃👍🏼

Very nice tour and area of course but some people have been allowed to have a free hand and have tainted this city and i don't know if it will ever recover, the faces at city hall the policies the taxes the laws the criminals the lawlessness all overshadow your pitch, if people had that type of money they would be foolish to get into that when there are better more secure cities and places to live where crime and criminals don't run rampant and where the law does its job and not keep releasing dangerous people back on the public, Chicago has a terrible reputation and the leaders have allowed the bad element to give it, its a shame but chicago has a long way to go back to what wonderful thoughts many use to have about it.

I didnt much like your video about my city, you say alot of ignorant ish, I can only assume you're from the east coast NY/NJ area, anyway that area of Chicago is extremely safe one of many safe neighborhoods in the GREAT city of Chicago. So let me educate you right quick. Chicago sits on a lake not an ocean so we don't drive, walk or commute up or down a coast we me along the LAKE FRONT, 2 the S in Illinois is silent, and as far as buying a 19mil home you don't pay cash, paying cash for the most part is poor people thinking, for most wealthy people you would just take a mortgage and not drop your 19 mil, that would be a loss of cash coming in, heres what I saying. Lets say your wealth is 50mil, so lets just say you put 19mil in a separate account and its getting 7 points, thats gonna make you a lil over a mil and change a year which would break down to a lil over 100 grand and change a month of income, which would be about the mortgage on a 19 mil property....so why would a person with the means ever give up that money when the money it self can make the money to get the home. Use your money to make the money for the lifestyle you want to live. The reason the poor stay poor, they spend their money instead of putting their money to work. The only people with wealth I know that pay cash for everything our my Saudi guys, dropping 19 mil for them is like pocket change. but look don't be talkin ill of my city.
