Al Capone is from New York born and raised. He was brought to Chicago by Johnny Torrio, another New Yorker, as extra muscle to help take over the Chicago outfits. Johnny Torrios empire was handed down to all Capone. So let's make no mistakes here. Al Capone was the New York mob and he was put in a cream position of power in Chicago, got a little too big for his britches and was ignored for the most part by the syndicate. They just let him do his thing.

There really is no New York or Chicago rivalry thing. That mentality or belief is from outsiders who don't understand the inner workings. It's all the same thing...different names. No matter where they are, this is a secret society/network of Italian guys. Italians just look at each other as fellow Italians. It's not a big deal if an Italian Chicago gangster goes to New York City and joins the racket over there, or vice versa. It's happened countless times. The end goal for both is money, which is achieved by cooperating with each other in a secret underground way.

Seek N. Destroy The mafia in Italy is recruiting teenage boys ALL the time. As for Italian-Americans in NYC and other places, they definitely still recruit guys. There sons, nephews, younger cousins, guys on the streets. It’s like what you said if they don’t recruit new members they wouldn’t be able to operate. Think about it, majority of mobsters today are quite old and someday they won’t be here, so in order for the spaces to be filled more and more guys will have to be recruited. Young guys in there late teens/early 20s and so on. There’s plenty of wannabe gangsters in NYC and most boys look up to their fathers and want to be just like them, they see the money, the cars, the watches, the big houses, the suits, the RESPECT. So to answer your question, yes of course they recruit new members.

They didn’t run him out of NY the five families weren’t even together yet when Al went to Chicago. After the saint Vday massacre there was so much heat on Al that when they met in A.C. Lucky asked Al if he would take a small charge and in Pennsylvania til the heat died down, he obliged. One of the strongest families of the mafia was in New Orleans. The boss there is the one that put together the Kennedy assasination. Most of the time in New York only 1 or 2 of the five families really controlled things. Do some research

Carlo Gambino is considered the boss of all bosses even after the 5 families started. He is the one that took the mob to next level after Lucky was gone. He is the one that started controlling the unions and hiding legitimate funds with illegal ones. When he died every rob mob boss from all over the country came to pay there respects. He is a true genius and legend.

There's a line from the movie "Goldfinger" where the villain Goldfinger gathers together several mobsters from around the country. One of the mobsters says "I don't do business with Chicago". More accurate would be "Chicago doesn't do business with YOU". Who got the "skim" from Vegas? Just Chicago. Las Vegas was Chicago's territory.

It's widely believed that Milwaukee boss Frank Balistrieri's capo, Steve DiSalvo, orchestrated the car bombing of Lefty Rosenthal (the "Ace Rothstein" character played by DeNiro in the film "Casino"). Balistrieri was arguably THEE major player for a good while in the Vegas skim that went on during the 1970s/early '80s.

@@39Hundred Exactly! I remember reading that in the book. I grew up in the Milwaukee area and vividly remember Frankie Bal constantly on the local news in the early 1980s bouncing in and out of criminal court. The Milw crew got overlooked for the Chicago Outfit in "Casino" for two reasons I think, 1.) Scorsese only had so much time and space in the script, and 2.) I think it would just be simpler for national audiences to swallow the idea that Chicago ran the whole show in Vegas.
