I remember people giving Renee a lot of crap for this role, saying she was a weak choice next to Catherine. I think both actresses understood their characters and were perfectly cast. Roxie isn’t SUPPOSED to be strong compared the Velma. Roxie is narcissistic and vain, overestimating her abilities which are okay but not star material. Velma is a seasoned performer who’s been in this business for years. Of course Velma needs to be a strong, professional presence next to Roxie who’s all ego. Renee played Roxie over-the-top on flashiness for a reason. Because Renee is really very talented she knew she had to play a middle-of-the-road, unremarkable girl with limited talent that was ambitious and self-serving and this is the performance she gave. Also Roxie isn’t an inherently likable character and I think audiences didn’t expect that in mainstream film at the time so of course if they didn’t like Roxie, it was because Renee made her unlikable. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk. 👋🏻

That strut towards the mirrors is simply so iconic. She looks like she’s having so much fun! And she’s feeling herself so much here - it exactly embodies how Roxie sees herself. Not to mention, the choreography and all the artistic liberties, like dancing on top of her name, the heart dot she strokes as she sings “Hart”, the lighting, the costume? Perfect!

a funny thing is that stereotypically after someone murders someone (in this case, it was kind of an accident), they can't bear to look at themselves in a mirror. and then she's over here literally singing in front of them.

The most shocking example of a weight change was in “The Machinist” tho! Bale really almost starved to death for that role!

I adore these versions of Roxie and Velma. Renee and Catherine are amazing singers. But better than that, and I’d argue more impotently, that they perfectly portray the characters. You can feel Roxie’s narcissism, arrogance, and lack of guilt in this version. Which I think is impotent for a performer to remember in this song- Roxie doesn’t care that she killed Feed, all that matters is that she’s getting the attention she thinks that she is entitled to. Not only that, but her soft spoken voice can make her seem so innocent, but so chilling at the same time. And I love her engagement with the mirrors to reinforce who Roxie really loved in the story- herself. This is why I love Renee as Roxie. I don’t understand the criticism of Renee as Roxie. I suppose that I can understand the singing not being as good as other versions of Roxie or as Catherine as Velma, but I think that this is a character choice on Renee’s part to show that Roxie is to arrogant to see her own flaws. Almost as if she’s to absorbed in herself to give the best performance she could give. All in all, Renee was the best person for this character.

Of course, we watch movies for the actors and performances, but to me, the secret "stars" of this scene are cinematographer Dion Beebe and editor Martin Walsh. My favorite part is the alternating shots of the final bars of the song: the low angle of the "Roxie" sign, and for me, the absolute fire of this scene is the quick cut to the close-up of Roxie's face on the word "Sophie," and then how it immediately changes back to the low angle on the word "Tucker," then alternates for the rest of the song.

This wasn't just a role of a unique character but a very crucial hyper critical role under the scrutiny of many a Broadway theater fan and review. I know the movie gets some crap from theatre people because Roxie can't sing, but I actually really liked how the movie made it all in Roxie's head. I like when there's more of a reason for the singing and dancing. This version plays into her delusions and makes 99% of the music a part of that. For people who never saw any stage version of Chicago, or didn't know she can't sing, they get to go through this journey with Roxie and by the end of it finally realize how poor of a singer she really is. It actually makes it an even darker story about Roxie's narcissism.

She was over the top on this performance. If she would have won the Oscar it would have been no. 2
