Every now and then, I'll see some doofus on the internet say that the Beatles are "overrated." James Pankow here says that his band decided to go big on horns after listening to Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour. That's an example of how the Beatles influenced other artists. You can hear similar stories from dozens of other musicians over the last 55 years. It is impossible to "overrate" the Beatles. And I say that as a Chicago fan since 1969.

@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum From a professional standpoint, Pankow deserves credit for his great trombone playing, arrangements, several hit songs with Chicago, and probably a lot more professional things that I am not even aware of. He is very talented, no doubt about it. Kudos to him for his career accomplishments...... However, I had a very hard time sitting through Pankow's monologues (imho). Point blank, sorry to say, I don't like his personality. I find him arrogant, abrasive, loud & very irritating to listen to. Again, it's just my opinion. And it bothers the hell out of me and a lot of other true fans that when it came to the R&RHoF induction ceremony, Peter Cetera asked if the band could lower the key of the 2 or 3 songs they might play together that night as Peter did in his solo shows which still sounded fantastic. Peter got a flat out "We are not changing anything". Pankow & his cronies are professionally trained musicians that could have EASILY accomodated Peter if they truly wanted to make a reunion that night happen but the answer basically was "F you, buddy". The remaining members to make that decision were Lamm, Pankow, & Lee. Pankow has had a chip on his shoulder that he still talks about to this day about his resentment that the MTV videos made Peter "the Face of Chicago" because Peter was singing lead & Chicago was supposed to be a faceless band, as if this was Peter's fault or Peter's idea. Pankow also had a problem that some of Peter's songs didn't call for horns. Pankow & the others resented David Foster producing Chicago 16 that saved their declining popularity and put them on the charts again, to which they, to this day, are still playing at their concerts because that is what fans want to hear. As a Chicago fan yourself, none of this is probably new for you to hear. I hope you have seen or will see David Foster's very good new documentary on Netflix. There is a section on his work with Chicago.

Yes I know.... I hate to say anything that’s not positive about any of these guys... as a ex-musician/band member I completely understand how complex relationships are especially after years of dreaming, traveling, eating, sleeping arguing, performing together with a band. It really is like a marriage in a lot of ways. One reason I founded the MHOF&M is that the one member in any band that receives 90 percent of the spotlight is the lead singer .....as Steven Tyler calls it”Lead Singers Disease” Not that it was Peters fault as you stated... it just happened and those power ballads did give Chicago a whole new life. Many were great productions too. The thing that causes a rub is they were a band. Peter being thrown in the spot light... again not his fault... understandably placed the other members in the dark... the thing that made them what they were ... a rock band with horns... were now treated with little or no respect for being the major reason they were successful. Peter is human. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that fame can go to your head in a hurry. Greed is also a factor. I don’t need to put up with these guys anymore. I can make all the money and do what I want when I want to. Game over. Jagger tried it... didn’t work well for him so he came back. Almost every lead singer does the same thing. The difference is Peter was able to do it because those later songs didn’t feature the band anymore. I get it. I’m not sure I wouldn’t have done the same thing in his shoes but I also understand how the other members felt who did not have hit songs under their belt as lead singer to allow them to continue to support themselves. Every band is one word away from breaking up. It’s just part of it. Again I’m still a huge fan of Peter and Pankow and the original band. This is just my opinion. Best , Joe

@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Your perspective as a past band member is very respected here. And I get what you are saying. But there is one major difference with Chicago....Unlike other bands, Chicago did survive and also did very well without Peter. Jason replaced Peter, then Jeff Coffey, then cant think of his name......The band members were still able to go on, still made albums, still toured like crazy, and all financially still did very well, despite the loss of Terry & Peter. So, instead of animosity, I would think/wish/hope that the remaining bandmembers would understandably maybe initially be ticked off but once the dust settled and they saw that there was life after Peter with Jason, they could keep looking forward and be grateful that the band could still go on & just move forward. But that isn't what happened. Chicago continued to do well touring but then Peter seemed to become this ghost that was never seen or heard from again in any Chicago interview, nor never given any credit. His name is/was never mentioned and/or purposefully omitted, as if he never existed. At the RRHoF ceremony, Danny was the only one to graciously mention Peter, so thank you to Danny for being the gentleman you are. As for the others, they have no problem cashing in on Peter's songs with every show they do, yet, will never ever give credit where credit is due, even 35 years later.

That’s true.... And as a fan I truly hate it for them and for us. The door swings both ways too... Peter too acts like Chicago never happened and only in the last few years had performed any Chicago tunes in his concerts. Too much water over the dam now I’m afraid for them to ever play together again. I’ve talked to James about Danny and Peter and it is like a bitter divorce where it’s over.......... Joe

I cannot stand this loudmouth egotistical braggart!! I saw their documentary and it bothered me that the current original members were speaking for Terry Kath and trying to sort of blame his demise on Peter Cetera because his ballads were topping the charts. They didn't mention that their own songwriting suffered due to their abuse of drugs. In reality, Kath's widow said that he was tired of the horn section and wanted to do a solo album without horns.

Salozmen.... Really!!!!!! I can’t disagree more!! He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame with Robert Lamm in N.Y... He wrote all the horn parts for Chicago... even “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” for Elton John. Look at the song titles on the Chicago albums and read who wrote what.... I find it disengenous that you would marginalize Jimmy Pankow contributions as a founding member of one most significant rock bands of all time. Pankow's contributions as composer and arranger is legion. I believe every member of that band would take issue with your absurd assertion.
