The November, 1972 concert from the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago. A stellar version of "Dialogue Parts 1 and 2" and a rare video of the band performing the instrumental gem, "Devil's Sweet".

Don’t underestimate the talents of Robert Lamm, Terry’s best friend and Co-author on many of their songs. He suffered deep depression and left band for 2 years after Terry passed away. Without both Terry & Robert, the band lost direction with Peter taking band into disco inspired bubblegum pop band 🤮

They wernt the same before Terry left, they had serious drug problems and they were seriously burnt out. They had made six fantastic albums and double albums but nobody could last that long at that much of a creative level. Blaming Peter for where they went is just ignoring they were already heading that way.

This is simply a fact. Kath was the soul of Chicago and their music was sublime until he died. Once Foster entered the picture they had some very good ballads, and Chi 17 was excellent, but they could never replace the genius of Kath.

The talent on this stage is rarely seen outside of a classic orchestra or pure jazz ensemble. 3 absolutely brilliant lead singers, who were all genius with their respective instruments. Add a drummer who has to be one of the all time greats, and add an off the chain horn section. Add to that their songwriting and arranging and you get Chicago. One of the 20th century’s greatest bands. Kath remains a freak of nature…that voice, guitar playing and songwriting …to this day these guys are required listening on a regular basis for me. But I could care less for everything they recorded after the loss of Kath

@dearing79 I agree man. You know, all I've heard in the last 30/35 years or so was how conceited and hard to work with Peter Cetera was. I've never had the pleasure of meeting him or any of Chicago for that matter, but like the old saying goes, there are 2 sides to every story, so who knows? What I do know is that the whole band has given me a lot of happy times for many years, the whole band, not just Peter, and I'm thankful that we have had this band so long. As far as the stories about Peter, maybe they are true, but who knows? If I could sing AND play like him, I'm fairly sure I would be a little full of myself, haha. Anyway, it is all just my opinion and I just felt like expressing it. Peace to all and especially to my fellow Chicago fans!

Was in 3rd grade when this came out. Away at weeks of summer camp, the counselors who were in their mid-teens enjoyed teaching littler kids to "dance" and they were always looking out for budding crushes among the kids. One of the counselors knew I had the hots for Hali, another 8 year old who looked like Shirley Temple. That counselor became matchmaker and put the '75 Greatest Hits album on the turntable in the mess hall where we were having a dance. She turned the lights down and grabbed me and Hali and showed us how to hold one another. Beginnings, Color My World and Searching make me shiver every single time, even 49 years later. We ended up sitting on a boulder under the moonlight, holding hands. Does it get any better than that?

…”sort of” NOTHING!!! You were THERE, man! Great story. One that I relate to. Yes, in those days you could gig around on foot with a good pair of sneakers and good line of bullshit if anyone ran into you. Those cats were the real thing, humble as the day is long and talented as the best of them go.

Criminally underrated. It's often said that if he wasn't in a "horn band" he would be regarded as one of the top 10 guitarists of all time. Chicago has been great over the years...But this early stuff with Terry Kath is NEXT LEVEL

Ah, the 70s were the best. Thank goodness I got to grow up on the most fantastic music via radio and vinyl. And I was fortunate enough to see Chicago once, in 1980, after Kath had died. Most memorable outdoor concert ever.

He was, but in this case, he really botched the drum intro of "Now That You've Gone", which, in the Chicago V album, beautifully channeled the soul of Gene Krupa. 🙄 (you can tell the rest of the band was not impressed!)

1972 was one of the best years for music in my life. I lived in Fort lee NJ at the time. I saw Yes at MS Garden supporting Fragile I saw Loggins & Messina at the Garden I saw Deep Purple supporting Machine Head at the Garden. I saw Edgar Winter & White Trash they were crazy good lol... I saw Dave Mason at the Performing Arts Center warming up Santana and they blew them off the stage best sounding band I ever heard. I am very very lucky. These were incredibly talented bands but my one huge regret is I never saw Chicago. These guys like all the musicians I listed came out of cradle with this monster talent.

This is the “perfect” assembly of Chicago’s band members from almost day one at DePaul University that I grew up on in the 70s. You can absolutely hear the difference between today’s Chicago and then. Thank you for posting this video. Terry brought so much of Chicago’s powerful ensemble to life on stage. I noticed Terry watching Danny play those drums like he is watching a magic show. You made it happen.

When I was in college, we had Chicago performing at least once a year. We listened to their albums incessantly. Terry Kath was one of the greatest guitarists of the late ‘60’s and early ‘70’s. He remains one of the best guitarists ever thanks to these videos. The horn section was always esoteric. How can I explain what it’s like to hear real music by real musicians and free of crutches such as auto tune.
