I really don’t understand why Terry Kath is so underrated. He was a favorite of Hendrix, Clapton and Page (Hendrix especially), and his style was mind-blowing. He needs more recognition.
@frankkolton17804 жыл бұрын
I think because this was during the era of so many guitar orientated bands being so popular, he was overlooked by most rock fans. Chicago was truly a team effort, the way the songs were written and arranged, there no keying in on one person frequently, everyone got their chance to contribute and shine in the songs and during their shows. I think that was their core idea when they first formed the band. Many bands start out attempting that but personalities, different talent levels, and swollen egos quickly change the dynamics of the bands. They were all talented but they all looked to Terry, he was a natural leader, he was very good with people, they trusted him, liked his ideas, and his arranging. I think he could of lead the band in any direction he wanted and they would've followed. Had he lived longer who knows what would of happened. He may of decided to try different things on his own. I think if he stayed, he wouldn't of allowed it to become the Peter Cetera Show, but that happened because he was gone and no one had anything new in song ideas except Cetera. Kath's leadership style was to include and inspire all, he knew how help and support the other's song ideas.

The 70's created the best music we've ever had. I am 79 years old and in my opinion, We were trying to make up/ rebel, or get back at the assholes who censored any kind of fresh thinking that didn't adhere to the conservative thinking of a few who had the power to control what music we were allowed to hear. Oldies but Goodies then Rock and Roll were lame and the pressure was building. The Beatles, from England, were allowed to come to the US and everything changed! Many new bands came out of the woodwork with all new music that "we" were starving for. Harmony with a guitar and sax in the background was no longer cutting it . Music is considered the opiode of the youth but when the change came, it was like a dam bursting. I got back from Vietnam in 67', right in the middle of this, talk about a ride... I was 22 and trying to adjust to the world. It was the best time of my life!

I never fully appreciated Chicago before. I was too young to know about Kath and these early years, but pre-80s Chicago is a blast! Love it. Fans of the original lineup of Chicago are familiar with the extraordinary playing of guitarist Terry Kath. The guitarist whom Jimi Hendrix said was "better than me" fused numerous styles and influences into a truly original style of playing. But while Kath's musical approach was innovative, his use of instruments and equipment was no less groundbreaking. In many ways, his use of various types of guitars, effects pedals and amplifiers was as original as his playing. - Terry Kath's Official Bio Pages Written by Tim Wood

Yeah! Terry Kath is the underrated guitarist of all-time, but Danny Seraphine is definitely the underrated drummer, especially by his OWN BAND! They kicked him out because (in their words) “he couldn’t figure out where ONE was!” He was really kicked out because he took an interest in their contracts. He was on a radio show I was producing, and when the host asked who was responsible for getting rid of him, he said “I’ll just give you the initials: RL.” I always had a feeling...
