Yeah, The Doobies are famed as a rock band but they've got tons of soul and R&B influence. Tom Johnston often reminds me of Ernie Isley, and the intro rhythm guitar riff on "Long Train Running" could easily have been inspired by The Isley Brothers.

@@davidm4630 I believe it's Marc Russo, not Mark Russo. Two different guys, though both play saxophone. I noted that Marc played an old Selmer Mark VI alto on this gig. Great horn, highly sought after (though some of them were not well-made). Marc has an incredible altissimo range with power to spare. Reminded me of David Sanborn, who died about a week ago.

Age has nothing too do with it. Great music never gets old. The sax solo was amazing. Tower of Power vibe. I got kicked out of h.s. band for biting on the reed of my Alto sax for squealing out high notes. Then ten years later I was playing lead trumpet and hanging over on a double C in Memphis State, Dr. McKay asked me not too this again. lol

pat just keeps on rocking. that guy is amazing and way under rated. IMHO the doobie brothers are what happens when you put a bunch of talented musicians from different cultural and musical backgrounds together. the talent just oozes off of these people. one of the few whose music has not stood the test of time, it sounds as good or better when these guys play live as they ever have. they've lost nothing over the course of time. never had to run around with the entourages and gossip rags to stay relevant. none of them had to be shot, or come out of an egg onstage or make some stupid speeches about the same things we've heard from everyone else ad nauseam and they look like they're just there to sing, play and give the audience their best performance. i'd for sure pay to go see them still.

Yes, but to be fair, Michael McDonald helped keep the band afloat with hit songs and during illnesses. Michael is a class act.

And yet Pat wrote and sang "Black Water" - MM - "Takin it to the Streets". I wouldn't be quite so fundamentalist as to define a band so demonstrably multi layered with vocalists as defined by one of their great singers......

This live performance is why the Doobie Brothers were the best .... the Sax section really ads to the live performance. They started in San Jose, California (my hometown) while I was in Vietnam 1970. Been a fan ever since. God Bless 'Em all. Every concert was a treat for sure and they were always great to the fans. RDC .....

50 years ago now in one of the most memorable summers ever, this classic song (my favorite from the Doobies) was burning our radios at home and in our cars up. It spent three weeks in the top 10 and peaked at #8 on June 30, 1973. Tom Johnston has changed very little over the years. He obviously loves his work performing. Love how the crowd jumps in on the "my love" refrain.

Still amazing after all these years, they sound and look as good as ever. They should be extremely proud of what they have given to fans all these years. Very deserving of the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame and should have been in much sooner.
