this was one of the best master classes I've witnessed! He is so generous, funny, and an amazing artist, and so articulate. I good go on and on. He was so respectful and helpful to these young singers. He wasn't afraid to totally point out where they needed guidance. Thank you Kurt.

12 Keys School of Music for all musicians. I would never have had this exposure. Jazz improv was lost on my primary instrument but vocally I heard enjoyed it. So I thought I hated jazz until Kurt.

I’m 40. I was classical clarinetist as a major. My heart wasn’t in it. It was in the music. I’m grateful for every chance to create music, or act, or even teach color guard. I always loved Bobby Mcferrin. All time favorite vocalist. Ella, Thornton, Etta, Mel Torme, and of course Frank. Before I walked away from from degree my senior year, I was lucky enough to hear Nature Boy by Kurt. I was immediately obsessed. So I stayed on top of all of his stuff. The Waking is probably my favorite. It just speaks to me. Here I am 40. With that same need to create music, but unsure how to use my training and ear and develop my own style and vocabulary. I kept trying to get a trio together. But I was putting the cart before the workhorse. I can’t move into Trane Changes with pitch accuracy. I can hear them after. But when I go for them I’m off and that just doesn’t work. But it’s because I’m not leading with my ears. I need to build some licks using slower tunes some patterns that get me back to where I need to be eventually. And practice with a piano and a metronome and record it. Same work ethic and heart, so I have the freedom. I need the vocabulary.

Me too. I loved his mentioning that even when yiu are being ignored, you are still working something out. I have played countless gigs like that and never mailed it in. For that exact reason. Very cool to have Kurt say that.

The best advice if you wanna be a jazz singer study how Ella and Sarah sang it. Ditch the RnB inflection.
