Didn't notice until today So I looked for a recording similar to the performance in -Stockholm 1972( or sometime beween genesis and forever) This was similar program, But unforgetable were the long brilliant accoustic parts that each musician performed - longer than on this performance) So we all go to forever.

Lenny White is very underrated...He is driving the sound the way a drummer should.
@tacman197410 жыл бұрын
I love Lenny White. I also love Alex Acuna of Weather Report. Because both of them have THE SOUND if you know what I mean. This electric jazz - fusion sound. They are not as "metronomic" as Billy Cobham and not as "jazzy" as other great jazz drummers. They are just spot on for this sort of music if you know what I mean...

This album literally changed my musical life back in the late 70's, and when I turned my friends on to it, it changed their's too! You're right. The album is a cosmic masterpiece. It goes in crazy directions, exploring the unknown, but it somehow never loses the listener. Each song, each melody, and every solo tells a story. The compositions were truly great. I am of the opinion that this lineup of RTF were the tightest band of all time. The four of them were so in sync with each other, it's almost like they were one person playing all the instruments, but at the same time each of them brings such a unique identity to the music.

When I started to really absorb music around 13 years old, I started out as a Heavy Metal & a Hard Rock kid with bands like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Thin Lizzy. Then I moved towards more obscure bands like Steely Dan, Yes, Focus, Frank Zappa & The Mothers. Then when I was 17 years old I discover a genre called Jazz Fusion which completely changed my life and the bands from that genre that really helped define my taste. But the band that blew me away when I heard that first note from them was Return To Forever. They are my favourite band of all time. I have only allowed myself to have one favourite RTF album, I could have easily just filled it up with all of their albums. The Romantic Warrior is my all time favourite album & if I could only have one album on a desert island it would be that one. I took a good long think about this question & I love the whole discography. I like the first couple Latin albums with Flora Purim. I adore the rawness & the variety of the early heavy Fusion albums. Their last studio album Musicmagic not so much but the live albums that they recorded just before they disbanded in 1978 are great. I also really like the Bill Connors era with RTF in 1973, I adore all the albums with Al Di Meola. Where Have I Known You Before is fantastic, No Mystery just a little bit lower in my ranking but side two of that album is beautiful. Of course Romantic Warrior is their masterpiece. Also all of their bootleg live recordings in 1976 are just amazing, I would have loved if they made an official live album during the Romantic Warrior tour, & even their reunion album Returns from 2008 is still really enjoyable. Overall when I looked at this entire catalog, not a very long one but with a lot of variety and live albums and recordings out there with all the jams and solos the musicians in the band created, I love the mellow music they do and the heavy music they do. I adore to death everything about it, I love Al’s phrasing & the dangerous nature of his shredding. Chick Corea is such an awesome composer and can really tell a story through a composition. Lenny White’s incredible monster drumming is so powerful, fiery & explosive, with Stanley being such a tight and direct bass player. Those two work really well as a rhythm section. I love Coreas Keyboard playing and like the whole fantasy/medieval world he makes with the tunes. Return To Forever never ceases to blow me away. The main reason I think they’re in here is because I have no problem with any of their albums and pretty much all of those records, I would listen to one on any given day and think yeah that’s got to be in my top list of favourite albums of all time.

Went to quite a few shows in the Motor City, and Chick and company definitely ranks among the best. Consider myself very fortunate. Now, seems like another life, on another planet. Ha! Man, there was so much great music coming out during those times. Grew up with rock and some classical. And then, to discover jazz fusion; it opened up a whole new world! Seemed like an endless stream of talent. So many fabulous, innovative artists. I'll reserve comment about today's "music", most of it anyway. I was a teen in the 70's, I wish I had gotten into more fusion like this then...I was more a prog head with Genesis, Yes, Giant, Crimso et al. That was a full time thing...Of course I knew about all of them except Lenny...But RTF didn't make it onto my radar until I was in my 50's...Like finding 5 grand in a pair of pants you had in the closet..:)...

I would have loved to be a teen in the 70s... What a great time for music it was, so many good and talented bands and artists. I am a classical pianist but in my journey of musical discovery I started with prog rock, then prog metal and I am getting into jazz fusion now. Amazing music!

@@victormontielmusic Prog and Fusion lack the complexities of classical like Mahler or Rachmaninov, but, it's fun to listen to...Lyrics, drums and Bass add a different dimension that you don't find in classical...Jazz, Classical and the other genres are lifelong pursuits...I figured I have more than 200000 hours of music listening and I barely scratched the surface....:)...Thanks for the comment.

I saw them on this original tour. They had big mirrors hung up over Lenny's kit and Chick's keyboard rig, so you could see them from above as they played - pretty amazing. They started with "Medieval Overture", and it was mind-blowing to me to hear that tune played live, it was so intense. This album changed my life, and for me at least has not aged at all, it still is incredible and sounds great too. I think the synth solo on "Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant" is one of the best synth solos I have ever heard by anyone anywhere - just amazing! Chick's command of keyboards, of the piano especially, was absolute and complete. Not to take away from Lenny, Stanley and Al, they were and are all fantastic musicians. I remember Lenny White did a drum solo during that show, and at the end he stood up to thunderous applause and held up a little handmade sign that said "Thank You!" - he seemed like such a cool guy. RIP Chick!

Times and taste is/are certainly changing. This used to be popular music in the 70's.

Such great memories! Saw them at least 3 times, the 1st with Earl Klugh, (just after Bill Connor left, though wish I could have seen him, great player), at Soldiers and Sailors Hall in Pgh, then several times later with Al Di Meola (Stanley Theater if I recall). Everyone filled with incredible musicianship. Took several friends who were stoned hard-rockers and they were BLOWN AWAY! Became instant fans for life!

Saw this band in 1975, 1976, and 2008. Stunning every time. Met Stanley Clarke after the last show. We were marveling that we were both much younger back in 1975.

Thanks for sharing this, it's quite the thrill to see this supergroup in action during their prime. Mahavishnu Orchestra were better songwriters, but Return to Forever were better musicians and rocked a little harder too. White is one of the fastest and most skilled drummers, and Di Meola was on fire, a real shredder even before the term was used.

I don’t think you need to say one is better than the other. They’re both great

Special time.. special musicians... music had a different sense of spirit and adventure in those days. Some of it worked and some of it didn't. But, and maybe I'm biased cuz I came of age musically at that time, there was a different kind of honesty searching for new sounds and approaches that were relevant. Cats still seemed to want to play for beauty and craft and uplift, not just for money. Maybe I'm being romantic but... "Romantic Warrior," in that live rendition, is a jazz/musical classic. Its just as relevant as Miles' "So What," or many of the other straight ahead jazz classics that are considered canon for today.

There's just as many great players now. The reason they're not as prominent is cause the suits in charge nowadays are nothing but corporate bean counters who ARE only interested in $$$. Back in the day, the suits (perhaps the majority) were music lovers. That's my theory anyway.

How true. This stuff, the best of prog rock, all that and more was GENUINE, and in search of aural EXPERIENCE. Today..I dunno where to look for this kind of stuff..
