I used to collect these in the 80's and 90's as they are hilarious and people would leave them on the bus and at bus stops. I had a whole box of the- those and Weekly World news were the best! Then I learned that they people who hand them out/leave them around have to pay for them and I felt bad because it seemed like they were getting ripped off my their religion.

Sadly people spent decades in jail, had their reputations ruined, were killed, and committed suicide because nut jobs who believed in demons and a vast satanic conspiracy were allowed to go on unchecked by psychologists, law enforcement, and the court system.

Interesting. I have a lot of mixed feelings about Jack because his work had a strong influence in the Christian community of my youth. My dad's D&D friends turned around and held a book burning of all of his things (and tried to exorcise him) because of the satanic panic. It took him nearly 10 years to play the game again. Even in the late 90s, other churches tried to pass these comics around to kids, banning Halloween and having us collect food donations that night instead. Which is certainly great, but we were not allowed to take any candy offered when we went door to door. If we'd stayed in that church, I wonder how else they would have controlled our lives beyond the church walls. I get that most people find these hilarious, and in many ways that's true. But what happened back then wasn't funny, and when people take stuff like this seriously, it does more harm than good. Fascinating to learn the backstory of this though! Your work is greatly appreciated.

I don't think the two things are really connected. People can know about and take seriously that fundie religion can be damaging, and fully believe that needs to change, while also taking note of the absurdity of things like this. Because 1) Chick is not the only reason fundamentalist, evangelical Christianity rose in popularity in the 60s-70s; not by a long shot. 2) Ordinary people get these books shoved into their hands repeatedly too. It's fair that one can read and comment on the contents of something someone gave them to actually consider, I'd think. See, people make fun of them BECAUSE they're wildly horrible and no one should have to live like that; people shouldn't believe that stuff. For the same reason, dark humor, sarcasm, and satire are such common coping mechanisms.

I get what you are saying, I was a roleplayer in the 80's myself, though luckily my parents were not fundie Christians, so I did even back then find the whole Satanic Panic at best an annoyance, but also hilarious. My friends and I would even casually talk about roleplaying so that the fundie churches would give up copies of Dark Dungeons. :D

Its because you're illiterate of history that you think what they did was "controlling". Catholicism was never ever Christian, and the first Catholic Emperor Constantine murdered his wife in a bathtub, his son merely on suspicion of treachery. In the first council of Nicea they transposed their pagan Roman goddess Cybele as "Mary", whom they actually worship and make prayers to. Also they created a schism with the Eastern churches by imposing their pantheon onto Christ and tried to crush Aryanism. This is relevant because if you read the Bible, there is no Halloween, and especially of relevancy, no worship of Saturn who's birthdate is December 25th. Want to know when the messiah was born? On September 11th. The things you do not understand, you do so out of pure ignorance, but then again in the Bible God allows the veil of illusion and deception to fall onto the wicked so that they may destroy themselves. As for the Roman Inquisition, those b6st6rds are still here with us. The Inquisition literally runs Georgetown University in the US which trains the US elites. One of the Inquisitors O'Donovan even worked as a director at Disney, which owns a number of bible publishers. Want to know why you are even secular to begin with? The "father of the New Age" was? A Jesuit Inquisitor named Teilhard De Chardin who helped to fabricate a titanic pseudo scientific scam to prop up Darwinism/Evolution, which the Papacy fully endorsed in the 1950s. There is a Holy War going on, but most of you have sold your souls, and not even for 30 pieces of silver.

I don't understand the use of "dark history" in the title of this video. Other than some completely common ups and downs in an artist's life, some strange and at times possibly dishonest or unseemly people appearing in said life, there's nothing really "dark" about Jacks life. I think it kind of smacks of bias against fundamentalist Christians, calling something like the maker of Chick tracts life "dark when on reflection using this video as a guide, it was kind of normal as far as the life of a somewhat controversial artists is concerned. I like Jack, I like his purpose and his vigorous pursuit of it.

I got one of these when I visited N.Y. City. I am from England and I really liked it. The art style reminded me of MAD Magazine, which I enjoyed a lot. The story was about a guy who gets into heroin and his descent into the seedy underworld of drugs. He ends up going to prison, where he is raped and contracts H.I.V. He ends up dying of full-blown aids in prison. He asks for forgiveness before he dies, and God accepts him into heaven, where he finally finds peace. Thanks for the video.

Chick Tracts were a weird hang-over of pre-comics-code American comics; Because they weren't sold in shops, they side-stepped the 1954 CCA/comics code Authority, which killed horror comics in America, and shackled he industry with a buttload of moralistic constraints. Chick Tracts were this wierd combination of Evangelical moralism, but using the same formula that horror comics like EC's 'Tales from the Crypt' had previously used.

My parents regularly had these "comics" in the house when I was a kid. These scared the absolute shit out of me, but ironically enough, it made me more or less atheist. I saw past the bullshit he was writing and illustrating. So I guess I have to thank Jack for opening my eyes and refusing to believe the bullshit.

I'm an atheist...but I love Chick tracts!!!!!!!! They are hilarious!!!....and I always try to find "Fang" the dog in them!!! The theology is so absurd, that I wonder if Jack himself is really an atheist trying to make Christianity look stupid!!!

Everything Jack Chick taught was nearly 99.9% Correct!!! You better REPENT (Acknowledge that you are an Unrighteous Sinner headed to Hell Fire 🔥); then you must Place 100% of your Faith in the Biblical Lord Jesus Christ as Personal Saviour!!!

🤔 catholics don’t usually hand out pamphlets or try to convert anyone... A true Christian would try to see if their waiter or waitress had a minute to talk about the Gospel of JESUS CHRIST, tip generously and possibly also leave information.
