I think I know what you're getting at my 298 Husqvarna XP... Is a 6 cubic-inch saw or 99 cubic centimeters.... I loaned it to a lager.... He said the thing is an animal.... Built in 1986 through 88... They told me the 2100 is a carbon copy almost all the parts interchange ....They discontinued them because they were too hard to start... They were a souped-up factory Saw ... It's a collector's item.....Except I put a compression release on mine...as per mechanics instructions..... It's heavy but it's got some power when that piston heats up..... My cylinder bore looks pristine... It still has tons of compression.... I tortured it that one time making an 8-inch by 28 inch by 10 ft long spruce beam.. but the mechanic says. Don't be afraid to put some load on it that saw can take it. And he said he could handle a 5 ft bar.... And he's right.... It still runs good ... I bought it in 1989..... I've cut... Lots of alder firewood and I cut down on 5 ft diameter spruce tree with it.... I lied it was only 59 inch diameter....

So glad you did this video and brought that saw back to life. Little story, Jan 1985 i got married, Aug 1985 bought my first house, Nov 1985, bought my first chainsaw a Stihl 028 Wood Boss(WB). 39 years later I have still have the same wife, house and chainsaw. I used the saw quite a bit the first 10 years I had it as I heated with firewood. The last 29 years the saw is semi retired but still in use. It will start the 3rd or 4th pull every time. Amazingly it is completely original except the airfilter and chain. Has the original 39 year old spark plug. When I pass it will go to my oldest son. Seems silly, but this video brought a few tears to my eyes. Thanks again, love your channel.

Got my 028wb about 40 years ago. Still starts on the 3rd or 4th pull, been using it almost daily clearing lots of fallen trees. It's cut many large dead ash trees over the last few years and honestly I almost take for granted it will start and cut thru trees far bigger than it was intended for. It's been a loyal and capable friend. Glad you got this one running.

I still have my 041 Farm Boss that I purchased back in 1982. She's just as dependable as ever and has only needed 1 tune up, 3 bars and I've lost track of how many chains in 42 years. The main problem I have with it is my hands locking up while running it due to this saw is pre antivibe but we still get her out a couple times a year just for old times sake. I also have a MS 460 Magnum, a 028 AV Super Wood boss, a 029 Farm boss, a MS 180 and a Husky 543 XP. All of these are great saws with exception to the 180. This is actually my second one because the dealer got sick of working on the first one and just gave me another new saw to get me out of their hair. At one point it was back in their shop 3 times in one week! LOL The second one was a little bit beter but ended up pretty much a space waster in our saw cabinet. I enjoy your channel, keep up the good work!

I learned everything I know about small engines from you. As a retired air cooled mech, ( nice type 1) I was left a 028 WB from Dad. I watched everything you had. First practice pawn shop Craftsman full tear down and pt. Got comfy time for Dad's death present. New china tune up kit. Man it finally kinda ran and drove me nuts! I pulled that fly wheel 3+ times cleaned points since couldn't find any. Then accidentally happened upon Tryldactyl converting a 031 digital... Hmmm... It's awesome! Dependable and starts on 4th pull Everytime! Thank you for all the information and now I can't keep out the neighbors and friends saws and weed eaters. Lucky I have my tools still. I would leave picture but it won't let me. Love from E Wa

points and condenser(always as a pair). it's common for the capacitor(condenser) to fail first, which causes the points to burn up in an arcing death, which also produces weak spark. I'm late 40's now, but as a teen/punk kid, I was the go to friend for carburetor and points/condenser timing adjustment, as well as many other things. paid attention to everyone doing anything mechanical/skilled labor, trades over the years, both good and BAD habits/skills. I weeded them out on my own.

Hi Bre, I'm a retired auto technician and now part time small engine technician. I enjoy watching your videos. The problem you were having getting that chainsaw running with points and condenser takes me back to my days as an auto technician, you have spark while cranking but the engine won't run. That is the sign of a bad condenser. I have seen that many times before.

On a Japanese car with a ballast resistor.... it is almost always the ballast resistor that is broken...resistance wire burnt out since it "runs" when the starter circuit is engaged... but when the key is released to the "run" position... there is no circuit through the ballast resistor... so the engine immediately dies...

As you said towards the end: "they don't make them this good anymore!" I have an old 031 AV from 1978 that has been cutting firewood every winter pretty much since it was made. I know for a fact it has never been rebuilt or cracked open because it was given to be by the original purchaser who was getting too old to get out in the woods. He says he just took good care of it. He said he never even rebuilt the carb, just changed the spark plug a few times and kept the filters clean. The old girl starts in 2-4 pulls, and it cuts above it's weight still. I actually find myself reaching for it even with my more modern saws looking at me on the shelf wondering what they did wrong. These old saws were tanks.

Sometimes, no matter how old things are, you just have to do it because of the sentiment. I did a VERY old Echo for a customer once that was his dads. What a nail-biter Bre. That was amazing. I kept saying it's the ignition, check the spark. And finally you figured it out. Old Stihls seem to have ignition problems. I bought a big one some 35 years ago that had no spark. The local shop checked it and said it was the ignition module. A new one then costs $100. Couldn't do it. Starter fluid does a great job of cleaning all the oil off the pistons and rings. As long as it starts quickly, the risk is small. Had it running great for a few years then left it sitting to long and now it’s back to running like crap. This videos great for helping me figure out how to troubleshoot it.

Your enthusiasm during this episode was quite infectious! Very enjoyable! I also flip out like this when I finally get something going that was doomed to the garbage.

I have the same saw that had the same issue. The coil was good but wouldn't run. I installed an after market Atom chip in place of the points. Many years later, it is still my best and favorite saw. Back then the chip was $10.00. Now they are twice as much but still a cheap and easy fix. Keep that old coil. They are gold.

Had the exact same thing on an 028WB. Neighbor had set it out for trash pickup as it was in pieces from a sealer who tried to fix it and gave up. Surprisingly, all the pieces were there. They had rebuilt the original carb. Fought it like you did and finally switched it over to electronic and fired right off. 8 years later, still using it as my middle saw.

I have that same saw. My Dad bought it back in the late 70s early 80s when everyone was burning wood. He passed away in 1986. I have it in the basement and run it every year. Nothing has been done to it, just change out the gas. She a runner.

When i was 13 my dad bought me a 08s Stihl to use when we cut wood ,My dads saw was a 090AV pure horse power saw , come forward 48 years and i still have that saw ! I saved it from being sold or given away by my sister as my parents have passed on , I't didn't do alot of work in its lifetime and ended with a post boring machine fitted to it and become rarely used ,the original bar and chain's where still with it ,so i just took it ,I cleaned it up it was full of spiders and webs and just covered in dust and caked on saw dust & hadn't been used for 20 years at least , i fitted a new tank vent as it was rotted off and thought lets see if it runs, cleaned out oil & fuel tank refilled the oil tank and mixed some 25to1 fuel mixx and about 5-6 pulls later she fired up! and the longer it ran the better the throttle response was to the point i haven't had to adjust carby because it runs beautiful ! I fitted and new roll frame cover ,What a job that is and the 08s looks almost like a new one , I do a few cuts with it a couple times a year but mostly it's there to remind me of my dad ! I have other Stihl saws ms661,ms391and the stick saw 009L all which i use for the timber cutting or trimming my trees

I had a New 028 and traded it in on an 038. I bought the 028 back for 200.00 because my neighbor wanted it. I have an 038 MAG II also but it can be a pain to start when it is Cold out. No Compression release on it. I need to sell it. Getting too old to run it. Nice video! Thank you for posting.

Bre, you make my back hurt just watching you start those saws on the ground. If I may suggest that you do as I have done for 40 years at a homelite and Jonsered dealership. Put the bar on the saw on clamp it tightly into a bench vise. 1) No bending over 2) leave the air filter off but have a pistol grip oil can with premix and give it a taste 3)right hand on the trigger/throttle 4) choke if has choke on carb 5) pull rewind with left hand If the vise and bench are bolted down solid the saw will start first pull every time unless you still have problems. Trust me, as you get older your back and knees will thank you. Love your channel! PS. I’ve always love small engines and two strokes are great. 😊 PPS. And then you can adjust the carb while it’s running wide open. That’s why God gave us 2 hands. 😊

Hi Bre obviously I am missing something. When you made the new breather line you put a couple of set screws in it which baffled this old man? How does the breather work when it plugged up? I watch every video and I love when something work you look to get all giddy it cracks me up every time, it doesn’t get old as many time as I’ve seen you do it! I can totally relate.

The set screws have a very fine thread. Air gets sucked in spiralling along these threads. The gap in the threads is too fine for the fuel mix to leak out when the saw is running as the carb is drawing in fuel from the tank....and air gets drawn past the threads to replace the fuel...otherwise there would be a vacuum in the tank if it was sealed...which would cause the saw to stop through eventual lack of fuel.. The only time you might get any spillage past the two set screws is if you fill the tank of a hot saw on a hot day...and the fuel expands (boils) from the heat pressurising the fuel, expanding it and forcing it past the screws..... As soon as the saw is started the fuel gets drawn into the carb and the air enters the tank via the vent....

Awesome work Bri! That's crazy that the points and condenser were the culprit, even though it had spark, it still wasn't working correctly. Dually noted! I'm a very sentimental person, and this brought a tear to my eye. I'm sure that gentleman will be tickled to death that you got his Daddy's saw running again! : )

I have a Stihl O32 AV that’s about the same age as the one you’re working on in this video, just came back home from helping my sister in South Carolina after Hurricane Helene tore up her neighborhood, that saw of mine was running 6 or 7 hours a day for 6 days and never missed a beat. It has the original carburetor on it and I plan on keeping it forever. Love your videos
