Just a Few Acres Farm

Just a Few Acres Farm

Күн бұрын

Today is the annual chicken circus; moving chickens inside into the chicken winter house from their egg mobiles. When you have 400 laying hens, carrying chickens is a lot of work and we enlist our kids to help, and the Farmall H and 656 tractors as well. In the afternoon we start work on repairing the barn. This job includes replacing a rotted barn pole and some rotted beams, and jacking up a section of the barn that has sagged.

just aint nothing like one man doing a 3-man job.....and not getting himself hurt or killed in the process of getting it done right....but that's the way we do things on the farm!!!!

Having worked on a poultry farm for a number of years in my youth, dare I suggest that you could utilise a drop-down flap at the door end of the winter house to load the hens through; and/or an improvised race with netting over the top, along which the hens could move, with some help from behind (a long stick, maybe with a plastic bag on the end). Food at the receiving end would help a lot.

Great to see Grace and Henry helping with relocating the chickens. Farming takes special people; Pete and Hilarie are good working together. I really enjoyed another video; now it’s time to begin reading your book, A Year and a Day. Stay well.

"Norwegian farmer loved hus wife so much he almost told her." One of my favorite Carson jokes. We had an issue with my daughter years ago getting a case of histoplasmosis. In short, it is an infection brought on by a fungus found in river valley's, bat poop and (drum roll) chicken poop. She never experienced symptoms. The first hint of it was scar tissue showing up in an x-ray for her braces. Scary as it was around her lymph nodes, so you can imagine the stress. Anyway, the likely candidate was her cleaning the coop, so she has managed to avoid it since and when I do it, I try and wear a mask. My 2 cents.

I watched a video talking about the manure pile and what's in it. You mentioned chicken guts and feather. My question, the chickens you sell at market, who butchers them? I know the beef and pork is done by the butcher, but wonder about the chickens. If you butcher them, how do you wrap them and label? If the butch, thats the answer.
