Some of those chicks are super duperly cute. I love Alaria's hair, and also the way she cleverly matched her outfit to her new hair. Awesome. How much are they loving the homestead now it's warm & sunny, not feet deep and snow frozen?

Ty for your videos & all the work you do to produce them. One thing I found out about pullit eggs. If by any chance you have Netflix. I watched Jamie Olivers Series-Jamie & Jimmy's Food Fight Club. As you may know Jamie Oliver really supports sustainability & not wasting foods. There was a lot of great info & one of the things they talked about was the waste of pullit eggs because they're small eggs. They started talking to chef's & citizens around their area in the UK & got them starting to use the pullit eggs in their resteraunts. He said they are better than the larger size eggs & one thing they are better than quail eggs & make the best poached eggs. The white doesn't spread out like larger eggs & stay in a nice looking circular shape when poached & fried. He's also behind using the ugly veggies (those not wanted because they aren't perfect) & gleaning produce fields to cut down the waste of foods. It was a very interesting series. There is one more series that was good as well & that was Chuck & Danny's Road Trip, which also talked about foraging & different produce & wild eatibles & meats in Canada. Just thought you might be interested. Again thank you for your videos.

Fun video! I've truly enjoyed watching your old and now new homesteads come together! We've got all of the breeds you mentioned (other than the funky haired Polish) and a few more. The only girls that consistently go broody for us are our Breese. They're a good meat bird and excellent mothers, but their eggs are small (medium, actually). Basically, we use their eggs to scramble and feed back to the chickens. I always find it funny that these *huge* girls lay such small eggs.

Astrorps are great. We've had 2 go broody. But they have't stayed broody. Since we don't have a rooster it's ok. We have to keep an eye out and toss them off the nest when it happens. They layed about 5 a week all winter. We got them last April and they started laying in Sept.

I have been storing my extra eggs in a solution of hydrated lime (called waterglassing in the "olden days") -- works very well!! Can be stored for months in the solution which is 1 oz by weight of hydrated lime to 1 quart of water, in 5-gal bucket in cool dark closet. Only store clean, unwashed, fresh eggs. Learned from Carolyn at Homesteading Family.

I cannot recommend Black Australorps more highly. I have two left of my original flock, and they DO go broody! One of my Australorps set and hatched a clutch of duck eggs, and raised them. Out of the six I had, two went broody. They are egg laying fools, and for the first two years in zone 5b, they laid almost entirely through the winter (with no additional light). My hens are now five years old, and still lay an egg a day. They are docile and great foragers. They're winter/summer hardy, too. If you are interested in heritage breeds, like I am, I also highly recommend Buckeyes. They are the only American breed developed by a woman, and they are great! Very curious and tame. They free range readily and are great mousers. Their egg laying is not quite as much as the Australorps, but very respectable. They are endangered, and I feel they are a great breed to try to preserve. They are dual purpose, as well. Thanks for your videos! I watch them often now. Good luck with the chickens, and I'll look to see if you get some Buckeyes!
