Kiat Ocha (ร้าน เกียรติโอชา) is a famous restaurant in Chiang Mai, Thailand, that serves chicken rice and satay. More details here: www.eatingthaif...
If you're searching for the best restaurants in Chiang Mai, you will surely come across a restaurant known as Kiat Ocha (ร้าน เกียรติโอชา). This restaurant has been around for a long time, and it's been a favorite for locals in Chiang Mai as well as Bangkok Thai tourists for many years. The restaurant is located right in the heart of Chiang Mai, in the middle of the center of the city, just south of Three Kings Monument. Kiat Ocha (ร้าน เกียรติโอชา) only really serves two different dishes khao man gai (ข้าวมันไก่), which is Thai style chicken and rice, along with the rare accompaniment of Thai pork satay, known as moo satay (หมูสะเต๊ะ). This combination is not really common in Thailand, but it is a brilliant idea and the two dishes go quite well together I must say.
So actually, if you order just a plate of khao man gai (ข้าวมันไก่), it will come with one scoop of rice on a plate with a small handful of chicken chopped on top of it - so it will be a single plate dish. For me that's just not enough protein, so when we ate at Kiat Ocha (ร้าน เกียรติโอชา), we decided to go for the full chicken plate and rice on separate plates - actually Ying and I each got our own plate of chicken because we each wanted a full plate to ourselves.
If you just order the normal plate of chicken at Kiat Ocha (ร้าน เกียรติโอชา), it comes with about 70% of white meat chicken sliced, and the other 30% is a mixture of different chicken organs like liver, heart, and gizzard. I like to go for the next plate, and I also told them to prepare it with no skin because I'm not a big fan of boiled chicken skin. Along with the chicken, you get a couple of plates of rice which is cooked in the broth and fat of the chicken. But while this type of rice can be too oily for me sometimes, at Kiat Ocha (ร้าน เกียรติโอชา) it was not too oily, and it was just fragrant and delicious. The absolute best thing about eating khao man gai (ข้าวมันไก่) is the raw chilies and raw ginger that are served on the side, and also the sauce. This version of khao man gai (ข้าวมันไก่) was prepared Teochew style, so the sauce was made from a blend of fermented soybeans - the sauce was awesome - but for me it's all about the chilies and ginger.
We ordered a platter of 20 sticks of Thai pork satay or moo satay (หมูสะเต๊ะ). I think everyone who eats at Kiat Ocha (ร้าน เกียรติโอชา) gets a plate of their pork satay. They are cooked in front of the restaurant, and you literally cannot resist them. I would have to say they were quite a good version moo satay (หมูสะเต๊ะ), the meat was nice and tender, not too sweet, and it had just the right amount of spice and flavor to it.
Kiat Ocha (ร้าน เกียรติโอชา) is probably the best restaurant in Chiang Mai for Thai style chicken rice, and it remains one of the most famous restaurants in the city. Chicken rice is not my favorite dish in Thai cuisine, but I have to say they do a really good job of making it here and I would gladly eat here again.

Hainan chicken rice! The ginger, dark soy sauce, and more importantly the chili play an important role in complimenting the chicken rice to the highest level. Mark! Do come to Singapore if you have the chance and try out our local cuisine. Laksa, sambal sting ray, chilli crab, chicken rice (white or roasted) will not disappoint you.

See, these are the kind of servings my husband loves, everything separate and all sauces on the side so he can add as much or as little as he wants. I have to be honest and say that the chicken on top of the rice looked a bit bland, but as soon as you added the sauces on top, it looked soooo good to eat.

As a Thai, I don't think the taste of blood jelly is as disgusting as it sounds. Like Mark said, it doesn't have any flavour by itself. Since it's already been boiled, its texture is firm - half way between tofu and jelly. It doesn't melt, which allows it to be put in soup or stir-fried. In my opinion, English black pudding tastes more like blood than this jelly. Anyway, to each, his own :)

Mark, can you decipher what the chili and ginger dressing have? What liquids did they add to it? Soy sauce? Vinegar?
@MarkWiens
@MarkWiens 10 жыл бұрын
MsLansones I think the brown sauce is made from fermented soybeans, and then the black sauce is mostly just a sweetened thicken soy sauce (like kecap manis). Then the chilies and ginger are just straight plain.

Hi Mark, My wife and me like all your Thai food video. This Chicken rice stall is near the 3 king monument. Be careful about the price, they charge very high price for tourist. While you are in Chiang Mai, you should try the "Midnight Chicken" along Kampangdin road. The stall open at 1130pm, you will not miss it. there are 2 stall. You will know which stall is good, from the queue. It is all deep fried food, chicken fish pork etc etc.

I've noticed on some previous videos people asking about germs and getting sick eating street food in Asia. I lived in Asia for 4 years as a kid with my family and have been back several times since, specifically Malaysia (amazing street food there btw), China and Taiwan. A few noted for people concerned about this. Yes germs and getting ill are a risk but it's not usually anywhere near as bad as most people think, usually the worst you get is a few days of the runs, though I had this issue for about a month once. We never got really ill the entire 4 years we were there, though my father got very ill on one trip back (from shellfish in a nice restaurant, see below). Here are some tips. Hawker stalls and real street food is actually some of the safer food usually, even if it looks dirty. The reason is they are forced to cook it on the spot from fresh ingredients most of the time. Stick to the busy popular places most frequented by locals. Be careful about shellfish, you DO take a risk eating shellfish in a lot of places, other seafood should be ok though. Also be careful with iced cold drinks sold on the street. Ironically it's often the hotel buffet that will make you sick not the street food, stay away from places that seem to cater just to tourists. Stick to these rules and a little common sense and most people should be fine. :P

Rule number one is not to watch your food porn at night LOL … This makes me feel very hungry… I would caution that having "kao mun gai" in summer can give you a trouble. If everything is sold out quickly, you should be just fine. If the boiled chicken is left for a while, you may have a risk of having a food poisoning … Bacteria grows very fast as it is very hot in summer in Thailand …

Looked good Mark and TY for sharing. I had shrimp satay in a Vietnamese restaurant a while back and the shrimp was common but the sauce was outstanding. I find that there is only so many ways to cook shrimp, chicken, pork, beef and it's still shrimp, chicken, pork, beef in the end. It's the sauces that make the difference. Do you agree?

coagulated blood is an acquired taste. it's mineral flavor and jelly-to-grainy texture dries out my tongue. the only way i could've eaten it, is to coat it with the ginger/chili mixture then chase it down with satay sauce!

THis is my kind of video! I love innards.And I love the simple but tasty style of cooking. Lots of flavor with the real flavors coming out. I think we waste so much of the good parts here in the US. ANd it was nice to get a glimpse of your wife, she looks lovely.

Bobby B Thanks, good to hear you love the innards too - yah I agree with you - I think many people are just taught not to like them from an early age.

That restaurant's actually my favorite restaurant in Chiang Mai, but I only order the Satay and Fried Rice Chicken, cos I don't like the smell of the chicken skin :/

Mark, I do not eat blood, so can I ask them to leave it off my plate? How do you say no blood in Thai?👣
@1donjul
@1donjul 8 жыл бұрын
+Donna Copas in thai the word mai (ไม่) is used to make a negative form. and blood is lued (เลือด) (I dont know how the blood dish is called in thai) the word to have/take is ao (เอา). I guess you can say something like mai ao lued (ไม่เอาเลือด) so that means: I don't want blood. hahah hope this helps a bit, im not a native thai, but thais would understand this.

Awesome, my kind of food. Is the satay the same thing as moo ping? Try the food of the night market in front (parking place) of the Tesco shopping center. It's only 2 or 3 times a week there.
@MarkWiens
@MarkWiens 10 жыл бұрын
ttasd1 Thank you for watching, glad you like this food. Moo ping would be marinated in a sweet soy sauce and satay is usually in coconut milk mixed with turmeric and other spices, so they have quite a different taste. For satay, look for the yellow colored skewers.
