@MikeQuain3 жыл бұрын
But cornering force is a direct product of effective lean angle. There's only two ways you could carry the same speed and lean less. One is to take a wider line and the other is to move your body way over while keeping your bike more upright. Neither is necessarily an indicator of better riding.
@beepbop66972 жыл бұрын

@MikeQuain2 жыл бұрын
@@beepbop6697 I'm saying that effective lean angle (which is your bike's lean combined with body lean) and corner radius are mathematically linked. You can't just "lean less." A safe rider would know this
@beepbop66972 жыл бұрын
@@MikeQuain we are talking about the bike's lean angle (which directly relates to the "chicken strips" on the tires). Speed, the rider's path through the corner, as well as body positioning have great effects on the actual lean angle of the motorcycle needed. OP said that if he can get through the same corner at the same speed with less lean means he is a better rider, and I agree with that completely. It means he has a better path and body positioning than someone who is leaning the bike more for the same corner at the same speed. Less lean angle means more usable suspension available as well (more stability) and leaves him with more braking capability because the bike is more upright.

Your advice is the best. I hope someone talks to me about chicken strips. I have a whole series of responses that will make them understand that they don't know what they are talking about. Like you say, don't let someone else incorrect ego knowledge make you drive outside of your skill set. When I get new tires I go into shallow turns and lean the opposite way so that the bike can lean over more to cause wear al the way up the edge [ to do that initial scuff so that it is not slippery]. Poor rider position is the prime reason more tire wear is on the edge. The more the rider leans, the more upright the bike, the less edge wear. Chicken strip advocates have it backwards.

The amount of lean you can get on a particular tyre (and the resulting chicken strips or lack thereof) is directly related to the profile of that tyre. Eg. Our front race tyre (R11) has such a sharp profile that you'd be off the edge of the rear before you go anywhere near the edge of the front. On a cruiser tyre, the profile is so flat and lean angle is almost non-existant. So strips are all relative.

Ten thumbs up. Don’t put ranch on your chicken strips... it will turn your bike into a sparkler. I used to ride my daily rider to the track, strip it, race it, put it back together and ride it home. Usually with my fiancée on the bike. It was more about hanging out with friends and getting my girl, my bike, and myself back home and back to work and doing it again the next weekend. One of out friends always had a chase vehicle and always made sure he always had room for anyone who did “the sparkler” and he usually had it running by the next morning. “Always do your best to make it home each night!” Drink of choice is orange and water!

@@LiterPlus I agree you should not ride beyond your capabilities. I feel much better grip when I use the tyres properly and generate the heat in them needed to work correctly. I’m not sure what you mean by static grip but many tyres now with carcass deformation and dual compound have incredible edge grip. Just watch some amateur Irish road racing.

The idea of judging a riders ability by the unworn edge of a tyre is a total misunderstanding of what is needed to ride fast in bends. When I ride a sports bike SP1 it has one of the highest lean angles possible but I'm way off the side with the bar ends nearly touching the ground. When I ride a dirt bike then the bike is layed over with me almost upright. Both styles will get me round bends super fast. Now the biggest indicator of a rider that really pushes things is how long a tyre lasts. Forgetting super soft track tyres but look at races for stock model race bikes. TT super bike or TT super sport. A lap is 38 miles of normal roads. No special tarmac or special tyres. After 2 laps the tyres are changed. They are knackered. I suspect most readers here would be gutted if they got less than a thousand miles on the streets. The ones that don't are almost certainly the ones doing burnouts in the parking lot. Or those that push it to the limit in the safest place on track days.
@LiterPlus3 жыл бұрын
The tire on my CB lasted 2200 miles. I did a small burnout on it the day I was getting it changed because she was shot. 3/4 of those miles were twisty mountain roads. Haven't been to the track this year yet. Most do not understand the concept of the rider leaning so the bike doesn't have to. Or at least it leans less if the rider is off the bike leaning. Kind of like draging knee. Good riders use there knee to judge the lean angle. Riders that are worried about looking cool and saying they can drag knee are the ones that are getting passed by the guy that isn't dragging knee. I could have been dragging knee in my profile pic if I was hanging off the bike like a monkey. But one cheek off the seat and act like you are trying to kiss the mirror when in full attack. If your knee touches you know you are getting close to the limit. Elbow is pretty much it. Lol

If you can. Depending where you land and on your interests but try to get to brooklands. Its not that far from Heathrow. Its the world's oldest banked race track. In fact also the world's oldest purpose built race track. The holder of the most speed record attempts I believe. The location of the first British grand prix. And yuk an aircraft museum. Depends if you like the days of men being heroes. You need to wait for the UK to open its borders but as I said UK to IOM should be open from end of June. Not sure about bike hire but trike hire is or was definitely possible. A meal at the Raven is a must. Good food and the owner is a rider. 90%or more of the islanders are pro bike. I normally stay up near the airport very close to the southern 100 course which is also fun and the local transport is by steam train. The inspiration of Thomas the tank engine. There is even a Sodor house! The white road markings are like ice and the stobe effect of lights under the trees is hard work. DO IT DO IT Now! 😁

Forgot to say most of the mountain course is limited by speed restrictions but the mountain section is subject to common confusion. WHAT IS SAFE? You will also find that normally from TT to Manx being June July and August that the mountain section is one way.

Martin Flemming, I agree with the ride your ride statement. On certain roads I will eliminate the chicken strips and like you said have some in reserve for safety. Not sure what you mean. A sleeper car would be like a family car that has been modified so that it surprises everyone when it beats a muscle or super car in a race. A sleeper rider or bike would be something like a Harley that can beat a superbike in a race. 2 riders going the same speed through a curve. One doesn't lean their body over the side of the bike. But just let's the bike lean. Will have less chickenstrip left than the rider that leans their body off of the bike. But as they go faster the first rider will run out of tire and low side far sooner and at a lower speed than the rider that is attacking the corner and leaning off his bike.

Chicken strips are a sign of fear to lean in the corner. If the rider experiences fear, he should go to a riding course or stop. It should be mandatory to go on a closed circuit and do training. The people from this video obviously haven’t. Fear is very dangerous (in any activity)
@LiterPlus3 жыл бұрын
So I do go to the track and do ride on the edge of the tire. This is about riding on the street. And telling people not to worry about them. They are not a sign of ability. Riding on the ragged edge on the street is dangerous and reckless. At the track, everyone is there knowing what is going down. On the street there are to many variables. And you are putting others in danger. Not just yourself. Not to mention the surprises that can occur or the laws you will break achieving the speed needed to scrub the edge of your tire. On another note. One of the riders who's bike is in the video had only been riding 2 or 3 times. So no she isn't going to be on the edge of her tire. And her first track day is coming up. Ride safe.
@LiterPlus3 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, fear is not dangerous. Fear is a great way to judge if you are over riding your ability. And if you respect it, it can save your life. Not fearing consequences is what is dangerous. And will get you or someone else killed.
@Fr997633 жыл бұрын
@@LiterPlus many accidents happen because riders are unable to judge the lean angle. They lose the front or rear, they run wide into upcoming traffic or off the road…. You can’t tell people that it is ok not to use the full tyre. You should tell them that they have to know how and regularly train to use the full tyre. That you don’t need full angle if you’re driving in 50 where it says 50 is pointing out the obvious. No need for a video. That people should respect speed limits is obvious too. BUT that is NOT good enough for a motorcycle driver. You’re advising to go for the lowest common denominator among motorcyclists. In the first unexpected situation (and they will have some) they will not know that they had the tools to react and be safe. You have a good day
@LiterPlus3 жыл бұрын
@@Fr99763 This video is about the chickenstrip itself. And not worrying about it. I have been training Ashley in other videos and you will hear me tell her that if she thinks she is to fast in a corner, not to panic. But continue to steer and lean harder. Because she is not even close to using the abilities of the bike or the tire. They will not fail if she doesn't give up. Just because someone is not using the full tire doesn't mean they can't. I had an incident just the other day. If I had been at my full potential or on the edge of the tire, I would have wrecked hard. I came around a suggested 40 mph curve about 55. Sand had been drug out onto the road and it was so miniscule I couldn't see it. But when I hit it my bike slid sideways a good foot or two. Then it caught and almost high sided me. Bucked me pretty good. Feet off the pegs, ass in the air etc. So that is why I don't push a bike to its edge on the street. But you ride your ride. Hopefully you never find yourself in a situation that there is no coming back from. And don't try to tell people that they are not riding like they should because of chickenstrips. It is far more dangerous pushing someone past their abilities than letting them get there in their own time.

Judging chicken strips is more about weeding out the posers. Cruiser, sport tourer, something in between, who cares. If you’re on a R1M or some other purpose built track bike and your chicken strips are the size of the girls bike in the video. You are a poser. Probably rides to get coffee in full leathers and their noisy as hell AGV Pista helmet or some other place to be SEEN, not for the ride.
@LiterPlus3 жыл бұрын
Only time I really look at my tires is at the track to read them. I have less chicken strip on my CB than my CBR on the street. But ride my CBR harder. Reason being is I am in attack position on the CBR and actually lean like I should. The CB being upright I ride more relaxed which causes the bike to lean more. The best way to see if someone is good is by how the tire is balling up. Not how far over they are.
