My young pullets (have 26) just started laying couple weeks ago. I got seven eggs yesterday which is the most so far. My new 48" Large HenGear nest box was delivered today. Got to assemble it when I get home from work. WOOO HOOOO!!!!! Love new toys. Hope the hens love it too. I also got me one of their HenGear solar powered Auto Roost Release so I won't have to let the roost bar down every morning. I have to be at work by 3:45AM so it will make my life easier. Love your channel !!!👍👍👍👍👍

Thanks for the video. I just ordered one. We had to build a new coop after a storm damaged our barn and the nesting box was the last thing we needed to add. We really didn’t want to build them again, although our last nests served us for over 20 years. These look great, so we’re giving them a try!!

Very cool. You're welcome. Sure seems like there is a lot of storm damage to barns and coops recently. I have a lot of damage on the homestead as well.
@rhon884

Our damage happened this spring when several tornadoes hit our county in North Texas. We got a new barn out of it. It displaced our birds for a while, but we’re very happy with the new coop. And I’m excited about getting clean eggs now!! Hope your damage gets fixed better than before as well!

Thanks for the recommendation, I will check it out. We just started having major issues with one of our Rhode island reds pecking/eating the eggs as well!

You're welcome. I did a video in the past about it being an issue of too little protein and calcium in their diets. If they get a taste, they will not stop though.
@MsTheHymn
@MsTheHymn 2 жыл бұрын
In our experience, your chickens are just lacking in their diet. Mostly protein. The chickens we adopted were not only eating eggs but pecking each other. They used to live in cages, we got them and allowed them to roam free in the property (they have their coop at night) they stopped all these lousy habits. They eat grass, clover, the ocasional insect they find, and we give them protein (either fish or barley) and fruits (papaya, watermelon, banana, apples from the orchard, etc). Problem solved.
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience 2 жыл бұрын
Our experience is different. While it starts as a diet problem, if that diet is not solved quickly, they will continue to peck the eggs out of habit. Originally, we changed their diet, but they did not adapt quickly enough and still pecked after dietary changes (we did a video on several of those issues). Once the habit is formed, they will not stop.
@markbsb7176

Exactly! They eat them for calcium and protein, which they need.
@FuriosaSonoran

@@markbsb7176 I volunteered at a factory farms rescue @PeacefulPrarie in CO... I was informed that chickens are genetically modified and actually biologically engineered to over produce commercially, so while the eggs you get are more, the hens and their dietary needs become spent more quickly. Deficit in calcium: absolutely. The locall ranchers that are indie do not care for their hens so well, and eggs must be washed, as most hems poop on their eggs. However, this also rules out long term storage with lime because eggs that are commerical or washed cannot be preserved raw with masonry lime. I learned that from Homesteading Family out of Idaho, they have a great channel too. I LOVE CLE, because there's a LOT more of the mechanics illustrated on this channel of making the most of space, time, and energy for your plants and animals.

My aunt used to pick up a egg poking hen and ring her neck. That was dinner that night. If a hen starts they won't stop. And you don't allow that behavior
@CountryLivingExperience

True that they won't stop. That is why this box works so well......if you don't want to kill your chicken.

I live in Texas also. It's pretty hot to say the least. I have lost three hens to the heat this year. Since these are made of metal do they heat up and get too hot for the hen to lay in? Thanks! Love the videos and reviews
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Sorry that you lost those chickens. Mine seem to be fine with the heat. The boxes do heat up a lot but my chickens don't seem to be affected by that. They still go in there and lay.

We got a rooster accidentally, I don't know if I want to eat fertilized eggs. Any thoughts?
@tyrabanksmoney4541
@tyrabanksmoney4541 2 жыл бұрын
you cant even tell the difference. the only way you will know if the egg is fertilized if it hatches. some people think the white membrane sometimes found in eggs is sperm but it isn't, it is membrane to keep the yolk from bouncing around the shell and breaking.
@CountryLivingExperience

Eating fertilized eggs is fine. No different than normal.

I know that and that is what I mentioned. However, if they start pecking eggs and you don't correct it with diet in time, they will continue to peck.
