Chickering is the oldest American piano company which was the #1 piano maker in the world at one time. This American made piano is in excellent condition! The sound of a great Chickering piano like this is so different from the plethora of Asian production pianos which are so common today.
This California has no rust or corrosion, and has had very little play. So the action has excellent felt for a long life. The tone is warm and round - something rarely heard today.
The case has a classic, timeless beauty with the traditional, sprayed, hand-rubbed lacquer finish, and brass ferrules above the wheels. It also has the original, matching bench.

My aunt is the only owner of a Chickering from the 50's. Her husband was also a pianist. Unfortunately, no children, grand children, nieces or nephews play. I'm hoping this treasure goes to someone who will appreciate its beautiful sound and perfect mahogany cabinet.

Deep singing sound, however the length is inevitable. 5’4 is just about the smallest one can get to extract a sufficient sound from a Grand.

Chickering & Sons like many big name piano companies of the day had a long and interesting history. The famed Boston plant was moved to East Rochester, NY in 1927. So that is where this piano was made (1970). Wikipedia: "American Piano Company (Ampico) was an American piano manufacturer formed in 1908 through the merger of Wm. Knabe & Co., Chickering & Sons, Marshall & Wendell, and Foster-Armstrong. They later purchased the Mason & Hamlin piano company as their flagship piano. The merger created one of the largest American piano manufacturers. In 1932, it was merged with the Aeolian Company to form Aeolian-American Co." The East Rochester factory had separate buildings for each company and at its peak produced an astounding 30,000 pianos a year! It temporarily switched over to building aircraft parts in WWII. Aeolian-American ceased operations there in 1985 in bankruptcy and the factory is now a shopping center called the Piano Works Mall.

My parents gave me a Chickering concert grand in the 80's that I had redone in Weimar, Germany. It was built in 1871, with the Bass strings un-crossed. A gorgeous beast but I hope I never have to move.

Such a lovely tone for an evening of chamber music in house....I like even the slight de/tuning in the base register. Adds character. i would keep it as it is now, as long as possible.

Btw how can you play Mozart with sustain. It’s just not right.

Mozart's piano had a sustain lever that was operated with the knee. So judicious use of pedal can enhance the music of the Classical era.

If you were to sing Mozart using the technique of his time, you would be shocked. Music develops, when you fossilized it, it withers into pedantry. His playing is elegant and wonderful. I have been a singer in the top house a of Europe dor twenty years, yes, I so know what I am speaking of.
