Coincidentally, I just happened to read about this song an hour ago. This lyric is about the dictatorship. "you've invented sadness but you forgot to invent the pardon" Despite of you. This "you" we all know what it is. Chico could release this song only several years after he wrote it. Wonder why. It's very subtle. Sadly, non-Portuguese speaking won't catch it. The joy of the music and the singing is a contrast and a direct attack to the violence and the shadeness of the regime.

In a sense I do agree with jfergs in that so much of the song is in the lyrics. It's a nice song but I think one needs to be Brazilian to properly appreciate it's depth. Oddly, last night I dreamt I was traveling through Brazil with my parents (RIP). I think it would be similar to trying to understand Leonard Cohen without understanding English.

Oh my! Another from Chico! Its pronounce bu-are-ke, with emphasis on "are", as you say in english, with almost mute "ke" When he released this song, most, even the military censors, thought the song was about a couple at the end of a relationship. When it was discovered, all the singles were withdrawn from the market. And yes, a lot of his famous song is about the dictatorship. A good, very good one for you to react is Geni e o Zepelim. All about the hyprocisy on a perfect storytelling. It's a song from one of the plays he wrote. A good brazilian band for you to react too is Legião Urbana, especially songs like Faroeste Caboclo or Eduardo e Mônica, both storytelling songs, or the protest song Índios, or the reflective Ainda É Cedo. By the way, the percurssion instrument is cuica.

David Byrne's label put out an album Beleza Tropical a compilation of Brazilian classics he liked. All the tracks are great including Calice - Chico Buarqe/Milton Nascimento which is very beautiful.

Chico Buarque (1978) is one of Chico's most well reagarded albums. However, I would rather recommend you start with his album Meus Caros Amigos (My Dear Friends). For me, not only the lyrics are tremendously well written as always, but the songs are musically impresisve as well. You can't hear O Que Será (à Flor da Terra) and don't get shivers. Also, I don't know if you've listened, but you should check out Clube da Esquina and other MPB artitsts like Caetano Veloso (his most elaborate and exuberant works and his 2000's garage rock inspired albums are my faves) but specially Gilberto Gil and Djavan, whom are genius on their own.

The squeaky drum sound is a cuica which I was delighted to have a shot at while I was in Brazil a few years ago. I couldn't quite forgive the out-of-tune vocals though and I wouldn't listen to this myself.

Not the most accurate comparison, but Chico is sort of Brazil's own Bob Dylan, in a way. Not a great voice, but the lyrics are real poetry.

Are you american?? songs in french, spanish, italian or portuguese can be so interesting and are underrated out of that era, just because its not english its less popular. Imagine the 80% of people of the world which haven't english as their native language, its always like that for us. Except we aren't so conceited as you are! This song is a classic and rightely so. And I am austrian and have nothing to do with Brasil.

@@ricardo_miguel13 Am I american ?!?! How dare you. But seriously folks... No, I'm English. And I'm not sure how interesting those other language songs could be, well not to me anyway. How interesting could they be when I'm not understanding a word that's being sung 🤔 And it's not a conceit per se, English is a universal language, and statistically one of those most spoken on the planet. Which is great when we travel, and also why our take up of foreign languages is pretty poor compared to other countries. As generally we can be understood in most places. Course, that doesn't mean all songs have to be in English, but it certainly helps 🙂 I mean what incentive is there to listen to something you can't understand... little to none. So, you're Austrian eh, nice. I've spent time in Vienna, and loved it. And apropos this discussion, despite not speaking a word of German, had no language problems during my entire stay. English in action, you could say.

@ I understand that lyrics is important, its part of the artwork but for me at least the melody and rhythm is the thing that cathes me at first. I can understand spanish but french not really and I love it, the voice becomes another instrument. Then I google the lyrics if I like the song and it can evolve to something greater. Maybe the song was just too „south american“ to you, but countries like france are classic european sounding and are ofc influenced by the greats of the british invasion for example. I love 60s music from there, even film music was just outstanding from France and Italy. I find it kinda sad because they are a neighbor country of England and you both have great music (taste) as I checked myself. We austrians for example love old italian music, great artists like Adriano Celentano who sang in the 60s already about environmental problems or Serge Gainsbourg in France who brought great basslines and orchestral parts to the scene. Surely the Beatles for example respected those artists. To Austria, yes I am from Vienna and nice that you had a good travel, its a beautiful city. We speak english okay I‘d say, only the accent is maybe difficult to remove. But Falco that you may know already used a lot of english words in his songs and played with them and german/viennese words. Greetings.
