Loved this interview! And his statement about the drummer making or breaking a band is an absolute truth! This channel here along with Jazz Talk and Jazz Shepherd has become my go to channels for Jazz content!

Drummers make or break the band. Drummers set the dynamics which equate to the emotional content; its their equivlent to the tension and release of the chordal players. Priceless interview into the past......required for all musicians to watch

I was in Chico's group (or orchestra as he liked to call it) for almost a decade, and I love that this exists. The last few minutes especially really show how contemporary Chico really was. He was wide open to any kind of music. Thank you Monk Rowe!

You're welcome Jeremy. Pretty cool that you had that experience with Chico. You might enjoy our podcast, “Jazz Backstory,” based on excerpts from these interviews. It is available on major podcast providers. Monk

12:02 I’m afraid I don’t understand... a musician has to land the “role”/ gig as well?..
