In this video we are following the harvest of Chicory Root on one field of 11 hectare from the beginning to the end. On november 8th contractor Hack Harvest of Kruisland in the Netherlands used a massive Holmer Terra-Dos T4-40 12-row beet harvester to lift the chicory roots and dump them on the headland. After more then 2 weeks, on november 28th, the roots where loaded and transported to the processing plant ( Sensus Roosendaal ) which was a only a 10 minutes near the field. A Holmer Terra Felis 2, also from contractor Hack, loaded the roots on Iveco and Volvo trucks.
Chicory is used as a sweetener in the food industry, for more info please see:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicory

Cichorei rooien en laden door Loonbedrijf Hack uit Kruisland.
Dank aan alle medewerkers van loonbedrijf Hack en akkerbouwbedrijf Klein Tiengemeten!

Mooie video met prachtige machines. Het zijn wel dikke wortelen het lijken net suikerbieten. Bij de boerderij vroeger waar ze witloof kweekte waren de wortelen veel kleiner en smaller. Deze werden mischien rapper geoogst.

Is it a different machine that picked up the pile or just a different head on the same harvester? I was curious because the conveyor on the back was completely different too. But, it would be kind of crazy to have a dedicated machine just to pick up the root piles.

They do this because in this way each of the wheels ride in a different track, so you have a bigger footprint and reduce the soil compaction. This machine weights about 30 tons empty.

Superb camera images, highly informative - could have run for another 5min or so, without losing interest. I was actually reassured to see the flocks of gulls following the crop lifter, something not often seen apart from the odd crow. It suggests, to me anyway, the presence of worms and grubs in the soil, in turn suggesting a sparing use of chemical pesticides. I hope that's the case.
