This guy was simply phenomenal. Connie Mack knew who to give the nod to when the game was on the line. 'The Chief' could be counted on anytime there was a pressure situation. He had nerves of steel during the big games, and reached (or won!) the World Series more times than most players could claim. I mean, 3 complete games in a world series? Who does that?? I'm so glad you're giving us the old stories on the Philadelphia Athletics, an often overlooked team that saw some great success during the early years of baseball.

Thanks for this video, he is my great uncle, but he passed away before I was born. But I knew his brother George... anyway this was good to hear, thanks!

Happy to help. Of the early A’s, he’s my favorite pitcher.

I saw video of a 1947 Old Timers Day at Yankee Stadium. Chief was there and looked great.

"The Baseball Bug" is something that should be bought before the lost media forums.

Excellent video. I just read a book about Bender, "Chief Bender's Burden" by Tom Swift.

I love Bender, use him frequently in WhatIfSports baseball leagues. 2 seasons ago in a live draft league I picked him in the 8th round and he went 21-5 on the way to a 101-61 team record. My preferred choice to use is his 1910 season. The first season I played in that live draft league I won the World Series thanks to Ed Seward, another Philly pitcher, he won 37 games that season including game 7 of the World Series. Any chance for a video or interesting stuff about him?

That Whatifsports is pretty cool. The only team that seemed to be impenetrable was the 1927 Yankees...but even they had more trouble with the dead ball teams like the 1906 Cubs and the same era A's.

Chief bender is my relative.. he was my great grandfather's brother..

That would make you a descendant of John Bender, would it not? Unless Albert had more brothers. John was known to tip a few. Quite a few.

Fantastic presentation! And good on you for including the bigotry he had to endure. All too often that stuff is glossed over, and speaks to how even more remarkable his accomplishments on and off the field really were.

Thank you. I think it's absolutely amazing in a shameful way not only how he was treated, but how he was "permitted" to play, while other darker skinned individuals were just flat out excluded.

Only 13 comments. Three claim to be descendants. What a coincidence, eh?

@@jackbender5646 Are you among them? As I said, there's a video of a 1947 Old Timers Day at Yankee Stadium. Albert Bender is there. Still a hearty looking fellow!
