"The Choctaw people have a history of helping others - one of the best examples is the $170 that was given to the Irish in 1847 during the potato famine. To realize the beauty and generosity of this story, one has to understand what a challenging couple of decades this had been for the Indian people. "

I truly appreciate your compassion in helping the Irish, at a dismal time in their history. Your generosity stands as testimony of you as a great people.

Hi, I was at the official unveiling of the artwork today (18th of June 2017) in Middleton, County Cork, Ireland. It was a beautiful ceremony, attended by Chief Batten, and approximatley 20 others from the Choctaw nation. Thank you so much on behalf of my ancestors. Some people living in Ireland today, would not be here, if it were not for you're forefathers generosity. I wish you all good fortune for the future.

What a wonderful story, which sadly we did not learn in U.S. history classes. There is far too much that is left out of our history, but this act should be known by every person, Not only did you come to the aid of starving people far away, but you teach us that we are all one family. The generosity of the great Choctaw nation will never be forgotten by the Irish and Irish Americans. You truly reach out to every man, woman, child, animal, and the land itself as our own relative. Just a thank you feels inadequate.

You are the true Christians , we the pretenders. To give is one thing , but to share what little you have when you have little and are an oppressed people .This struck a cord in the Celtic souls. It still echos in Ireland even today.

No disrespect here, but, coming from a predominantly First Nations community, I'm really confused as to why a white (somewhat reddish?) man with a thick deep south American accent is Chief of the Choctaw Nation? Someone please explain to me what is going on here? Thank you, again I mean no offense by this inquiry I'm just staring at it very puzzled. He seems like a kind and intelligent man. I've never seen a white man with a bit of Native in his genes represent an Indian Nation before. Are they just gone/assimilated into white race..? Usually chiefs and elders of tribes speak English as a second language and don't look Caucasian at all.

A lot of modern day tribes are filled with White mixture. Any native with Afro mixture is usually cast aside or rejected. (Not always the case of course)

@airchompz In the old days, it only took $5 for a white man to legally become an Indian. Indian pretenders.

@@thecoyote9866 He just didn't look or seem Native to me at all. In fact I identify as white, but I feel like I probably show more Native features than him. It's just odd because up north there's actual red-skinned Natives. Thanks for your reply Coyote, the Afro mixture comment makes me a bit sad but the truth can be ugly sometimes.
