Chief Mandla Mandela: "It's not what we've done for Palestine. It's what Palestine has done for us"

In Istanbul, Turkey on April 25, 2024, Chief "Mandla" Mandela, the grandson of Nelson Mandela, delivered a speech to participants in the Freedom Flotilla's emergency mission to Gaza. After his speech, Chief Mandela spoke with Dimitri Lascaris about the tenacious efforts of South African activists to strengthen their government's support for the Palestinian cause.

Dimitri, regarding the eloquence of today's politicians, I was impressed, while reading the 1865 debates on Confederation, the Hansard of the former “Province” of Canada, by the intelligence, education, eloquence and humour of our founding fathers. Palestina did not start as a Muslim land. It was always invaded by different groups. Claiming that Palestine must be an Arab or Muslim land is not fair. Wanting to create a Muslim country there for centuries and not succeeding is not Israel’s fault. 400 years of invading Turks did not create Palestine by the Muslims for the Muslims because it was never a Muslim land.
