Iroquois elder and global indigenous leader Oren Lyons describes the authentic origins of the U.S. Constitution in the ancient Iroquois “Great League of Peace.” He weaves the story of the Peacemaker and how leaders are raised and chosen, with decisions based on seven generations and women choosing chiefs. He warns climate disruption should motivate us to “raise up our leaders.”
This speech was given at the 2003 Bioneers National Conference and is featured on the Indigenous Essentials, Vol. 1 and Democracy, Human Rights and the Rights of Nature, Vol. 1 Collections.
Since 1990, Bioneers has acted as a fertile hub of social and scientific innovators with practical and visionary solutions for the world's most pressing environmental and social challenges.

This was 9 years ago, we need to stay focussed. ❤️ It is now 2024, and it is even more important at this time. I believe in what this man's words to be true. Freedom is worth the fight. Mother earth is creation and we need to love and nurture her. Our nation is divided in the United States. I am so thankful for the videos coming up on you tube with Oren Lyons speaking. He teaches history that I was never taught in my early school years. I vote for Oren Lyons to speak peace in Washington D.C. 🇺🇸 A league of peace needs to spread across this land. It is spiritual. 🌲

Dear Chief Lyons.....I am sure you do not remember me, but I do remember meeting you in 1992 at the Windstar Choices for the Future Symposium. I was there that year as a volunteer in the Medical Tent as I was a Texas State Cert. Emergency Medical Tech.- Intermediate level. We had to put in our request to our head RN which presenter we would like time off to listen to...you were one of mine. In your presentation you made the statement that just about every person that you met commented to you that "I am part "Indian/Native American/an Indigenous Peoples, etc."....no matter what they looked like or what race they might obviously be..."they" WERE part Native American". Now after your presentation and as we were all being excused, I saw you walking toward one of the exits so I quickly made my way over to you. I introduced myself, Nancy Curtis, wife, mother of 7 children with the youngest being 2 yrs.old at the time, living in east Texas, etc. Then as I shook your hand, I told you that I wanted to make sure to tell you how much I enjoyed your presentation and "that I, too, am at least half Native American". Now, you looked at me with my red hair and very fair freckled skin....but seeing the sparkle in my eyes, we both started laughing at the same time...which is what I was going for because of your speech. And, you said, "I could tell that right away, Nancy." and we both laughed more. (I am half French on the maternal side and English, Irish and Welsh on my paternal side and have knowledge of my ancestors on both sides back many years to a great, great, great, great, great, great Grandfather Davis who fought in the American Revolution and know that my Great-Grandparents came to the United States (all 4) from France in 1870. so unfortunately, no Native American, darn it.) I did enjoy meeting you and listening to your presentation so much. I thought of your presentation this morning as I was thinking about this whole Senator Elizabeth Warren/Native American situation and wondered what you would think of this woman who "claims" Native American heritage when she is approximately 1/1,024th Native American according to her DNA report from Stanford. The Cherokee have already denounced her DNA report and said that DNA reports hold no water for people claiming to be Cherokee as it cannot distinguish between someone who has North American Native American blood and someone who has South American Native American blood or even Hispanic heritage. What do you think of this brou-haha about Senator Warren's claim of being of Native American heritage? At 0.09% Native American heritage according to her DNA report....can she claim to be Native American in your learned mind??? Thank you for all you have done for the people of this planet. You are a special man. Nancy Curtis, Price, Texas

Maybe she (Elizabeth Warren) was in another lifetime. When I was a child growing up on a farm in Kansas, hiking along the creek and in the hills (Flint Hills), I dreamed of living in a tipi. Years later I heard Chief Oren Lyons speak at the Cathedral of St John the Divine, summer of 1978, and when he said the two-leggeds, the four-leggeds, the winged creatures of the air and the creatures of the sea are our brothers and sisters. We are responsible for their well-being. He spoke of how a youth, when he was of age to become a man, and assume responsibility for himself and his people, would be sent into the forest by his village, after several days of praying and fasting. He would go into the forest with one arrow. He would wait, sometimes for several days, for the elk or the deer to come, and stand still in the clearing, looking directly at where the young man would be waiting. And the boy would shoot the deer in the heart, a quick and painless death. Then he would go to the animal and give a prayer of thanksgiving and gratitude for its sacrifice. When he returned to the village with the deer, there would be days of feasting and celebration Every part of the animal not given for food was used, nothing was wasted or thrown away. Over the next several years, I heard Chief Lyons speak several times; I had the great privilege of staying with Clan Mother Alice Papineau when visiting the Onondaga reservation and chauffeuring her to meetings in Albany (when elders and chiefs met with the Dalai Lama) and in Boston and Woodstock. These are some of the most cherished memories of my life.

Great points all around, and what stood out to me the most was Oren's description of REAL democracy from olden times.... And I'm thinking, one of the key reasons that it worked so well for the Iroquois was that the whole voting/election process was handled at the COMMUNITY LEVEL, so that all the candidates were everyday people who all or many of their fellow local community members actually knew personally... and a local community is a SMALL enough scale to allow every member to truly have a voice right down to the very moment that each candidate's election is about to become official..... WOW. It is obviously not done that way anymore.. not even close. It has all gotten too big, too complex. Because the vast majority of people on this land have bought into the idea (or more like, got bullied into complying, under threat of violence) that it is better to handle politics on the scale of one massive Empire whose central government is not comprised of a representative from every local village/community, thus not really giving the general public of this country a true voice in the politics that run their lives. (A kingdom, basically, except that there are several uber-rich kings who rule over the hapless peasants, instead of only one.) Our central (federal) government is said to "represent the people", even though the politicians don't even KNOW most of us in the general public who they are supposedly representing. And of course there is no way they could know us all; it's impossible. Because again, the system has gotten way too big to be effective in a way that is moral and fair. (Hell, it's not even effective for those who are immoral and unfair. Because in order for our societal system to truly be the most effective for everyone - including the immoral and even the uber-rich - then it would have to benefit EVERYONE in a balanced, proportionate way.) No politician has ever asked ME for my opinion about anything. We don't personally know our candidates (and the voting system is probably rigged even if we did), we don't have a true political voice, there is a shadow government that creates policy in secret behind closed doors because our "leaders" have absolute disdain for the general public and think we are all too incompetent to take part in politics... Well maybe it's not the general public who are incompetent, but the SYSTEM ITSELF. Maybe POLITICS ITSELF has become incompetent. Well, my solution is to abandon the modern system in every way that I possibly can without going nuts or getting myself killed in the process, go back to "intentional communities" (Look it up.) and start from there. That would be a grass roots project that would take a lot of time and a continual work in progress of trial and error to figure out the best ways to make it all work, and no one in their right mind should assume that the world will be completely run by communities overnight or even in 20 years, but we gotta start somewhere. And in the not-too-distant future, it will become apparent to many people that when it comes to societies and their political systems, yes, The Answer is an interconnected/interactive network of peaceful, sovereign, small-scale communities that all run themselves and tend to their own affairs, yet they are all collaboratively linked together by one common law: MORALITY.

Jeremy DiCaprio, Not so long ago The League of Women Voters had charge of the debates, and asked real questions, and from earliest times there were "town meetings" in an open field or at a crossroads of footpaths where everyone concerned had a vote. If children could understand the concerns, children could vote. It is only much later women were disenfranchised, the Democrats worried women would vote against slavery. I met Oren Lyons at an indian camp near Henrietta, Oklahoma. He said: Six Nations helped in the formation of the government, and had left out the spiritual part. It is that part, that should never be left out. He said, Six Nations participated in formation of the new government. This is how the government got it's three branches of government. I keep writing The Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights are the ideology and the law "as whole cloth". It was certainly not about only what is told in a history class. It was rejection of rule by fiat and rejection of rigid class structure, the King represented all that. Importantly, the immigrants were not English. The colonists were miniscule numbers compared to other immigrants. It was an attempt of conquest by the English Kings, that was rejected and repulsed by the people that were here. It was outside attempts of conquest, and, government by conquest that was the problem. Many, if not most, immigrés wanted only to be rid of oppression and oppressors. I have heard both sides of people who were here. Perhaps Oren Lyons will remember me.

Remember what duality is. The Democrats and the Republicans and the Democrats both work for Wallstreet. Political parties should be outlawed. They both make promises they never intend to keep. Duality works like this. If My brother and I tell everyone we hate each othet loud enough. It isn't long before his enemies flock to me, and mine to him. Now we both know who our friends are, and between us we have a excuse to plunder everyone we know. This is exactly why we have a two party system. Im only a friend trying to help.

We were never 'indians" we as Native People need to remove that word from our vocabulary!! we're not from India!! I know as the millennial Native generation asserts itself that word will be outdated and changed. I say this with the outmost respect to our elder Chief Oren Lyons! Aheehee

Well I hear sourced "India" as well as one thought they had discovered they had landed in the east Indies so I declare the people on these lands to be Indians , same difference I feel its a label. Why not simply use ones root cultural identity and nation in recognition or "The people" It would be important to hear the opinions of the clan mothers of many nations on an important subject like this.. I believe this perspective will evolve over time and I have already seen signs of this on a number of levels.. thank you for sharing

Cody Geewin, ..at DQ University, Dennis Banks said Christopher Columbus was self-taught in his own language and his writing was colloquial and he wrote "agente in deos" meaning a people in with G-d. I heard it there, subsequently hearing indeed Christopher Columbus was self-taught and used poor grammar, poor spelling, and somewhat more colloquial expressions in his personal journal.

This needs to be updated on many levels. First; The "first Americans" 1776 were supposedly named after Amerigo Vespucci, deriving their name supposedly from Americus, the Latin version of Vespucci's first name, whose named appeared on a map in 1507. In fact many first Nations didn't even recognize themselves as American. Another important fact is that Indigenous people weren't even considered American until 1924.

LIE. Blumenbach classified the "races" by color and by name. American Is the designated name he gave to the "red man." Amar ukar - The land of the feathered serpent. America is a cognate of emericus which has it's origins in Persia as Omri. King of Israel before the Assyrians captured them.

roger cloud, that is incorrect. Look at the etymological source of the phrase 'American' 1570s, originally "one of the aboriginal peoples discovered in the Western Hemisphere by Europeans," from modern Latin Americanus, from America (q. v.). It then was translated to mean a resident of North American European descent circa 1765. If you are talking about being an American citizen you would be correct.

roger cloud, Amerigo Vespucci never got here: he arrived at Gulf of Mexico and wandered around present-day Mexico very little, and went home. However, he has been cited as the origin of the term american.

I would never argue the man's lineage but this looks nothing like the "Aboriginal" that Benjamin Franklin discussed being in the Americas in the 1700s nor remotely close to the reports that came from the Spanish that arrived prior to Columbus in Florida. Can someone help me understand what exactly happened to their complexions?!

Nothing "happened to their complexions." Many people get a picture in their minds of those such as Red Cloud and others of the west and that is what every First Nations person looks like. The truth is The First Nations were made up of over 500 Nations from Alaska to Newfoundland and from North Yukon to Patagonia. All these Nations had differences in complexions. A few traits did seem to be consistent throughout and that was high cheekbones and dark hair and eyes. There are maps to look up with different nation's appearances. A Yakima looked much different than a Shoshone and a Navajo looked much different than an Iroquois. I usually have no problem knowing someone is First Nation at first appearance. I can see Oren Lyons is.
