The Peacemaker & the Tadadaho

This short film is part of 8 short, testimonial films, on the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois.) The Iroquois are embarking on an historic project about the 500-year history of the Iroquois, their relationship with Europe and America and their prophesies that, if heard, can help us navigate the oncoming changes due to climate change. This series of short films is done via their testimony, and creates the space for the Iroquois to tell their story as they strive to uphold the traditions and the legacy of their people while also protecting the central tenents of their people and their relationship and care for the Earth.
This series was created by Tree Media in collaboration with Oren Lyons, Sid Hill and the Haudenosaunee. My grandma is a judge on the rez and my uncle Todd Gates was the president of the whole Seneca nation . And that democracy of America is based on the way the senca laws of democracy and I am proud native from 2 strong tribes.

Congratulations Jacob. I live on Gundungurra country in the state of New South Wales in Australia. The Gundungurra have lived here for tens of thousands of years. I was honoured to participate in only their second Corroboree, ie the gathering for celebration of culture and dance, in 160 years, here on the Wingecarribee River at Bong Bong. I had a great privilege of preparing the dancing circle and I was live streaming on facebook the original peoples beginning the sacred dance. You have a proud tradition and culture my friend. I've always been fascinated with the tribes of Australia. especially surviving all racism your people faced in the cities and when your government chased any tribal kids and forced them into boarding schools to erase all tribalism, but yet you never let go of your songs, stores and all traditions. All tribes from around the world all have similarities, either thru traditions, beliefs, songs stories, but most of all , having a family that lived tbru times where half of our people and all tribes, where Almost systemically wipes off these lands. I'm proud of my family because we rose from cold Winters and foreign sicknesses into high places of the Iroquois. We are the keepers of the western gate.

The best part of this story is that it’s based on true events. It is not a myth. Aspects of the story might have accrued some exaggeration, but there was a man who united the tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy under a phenomenally stable constitution. A young Ben Franklin read about this event and the founding fathers implemented most of these statutes into the US constitution. It is a matter of historical record.

The Ben Franklin thing is well documented, the evidence of the borrowing not so much. The US was using British colonial government rules and kept almost all of them in place throughout the Revolution and up to the Articles of Confederation until they scrapped it all and did the Constitution, but the US system is still founded mostly on the British precedent, with sprinkles from other places.

Or that the it was based on ancient Greek democracy. All of these are a creative stretch of the truth, since ancient Greece was not a democracy and there was no democracy anywhere in Europe at the time America declared independence. Public schools offer an embarrassing parody of the truth on this subject. Historical documents from that time are pretty compelling. Our constitution came from the Iroquois Confederacy.

@@TheRadioAteMyTV Trying to dispute this part of documented history is a rather bold move when both the Iroquois and US constitutions are available for a side by side comparison. Theirs obviously predates ours. There are very few differences. To claim, in the face of that evidence, that they're completely unrelated and we instead got our democratic system from countries that didn't have democratic systems, is just astonishing. To quote a historical article by Molly Larkin on the subject: "For decades, the Iroquois had urged the English colonists to unite together as one independent and free people. George Washington, Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson met frequently with the Iroquois and made themselves very familiar with the Great Law of Peace. Washington expressed “great excitement” over the two houses and Grand Counsel. Several delegates from the Iroquois Confederacy attended the Continental Congress in 1776 as it wrote the Declaration of Independence and drafted the Constitution of the United States, modeling it on the Iroquois Constitution. Three weeks later, the Declaration of Independence was signed, and the United States of America was born."

It’s amazing that Tadadaho was included in. the end. I think people today would treat someone like that with unbelievable cruelty and also feel justified in doing so. You have to have a deep compassion and understanding of the harm perpetuated by rescinding someone’s humanity. I feel so emotional every time I hear that part of the story.

I was adopted into the Tuscarora Indian tribe yrs. Ago. The then CHIEF gave me a blessing telling me I would need this blessing later in life. Since that day the CHIEF has appeared to me in visions with messages off importance. In 5/2021 I had a tramatic fall during which time I had a great vision which included the circle dance song calling out the spirit of everything to me. From the spirit of the trees meadows the wind the streams & even horses. I thank this Chief for his wisdom then & now. I am a part of the ONANDOGA NATION. I AM THANKFUL, AND HUMBLE.

Good to hear this told from a m member of the nations involved I first read Jean Houston’s account in her book about the Pracemaker. She said she had it from various members. It is a story I shared with my English students after reading it in her book. They were silent and attentive.

It's hard to find info on your people from non-Native sources, but it can provide some clues if you have nothing to go on. Another name for the Huron is Wyandot (or Wyandotte): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wyandot_people (There are sometimes different names for tribes, depending on which side of the border they are on. For instance, Ojibwe (U.S) and Chippewa (Canada) are the same tribe under different names. Is it possible to contact someone on the Huron reservation in Quebec, Canada? @@sawatisbillings8759 Do you know any of the languages? I know the Six Nations all have similar languages, but I only know a few words. My great uncle compiled a lot of them into a Tuscarora dictionary. Did you know that there is a statue of a Tuscarora chief at Niagara Falls? His name was Clinton Rickard. He was instrumental in getting the Jay treaty officially recognized. The Tuscarora were one of the original nations that the Jay treaty was made with, back when George Washington was president. Part of this agreement was that the Six Nations could freely cross the border. This was later expanded to include all Native peoples.

@@rachelschultz3923 yes I am familiar with Clinton Rickard and the IDL. I've crossed over the Whirlpool bridge with other Natives to honor our border rights. I grew up at Tuscarora. Went to Tuscarora school and NWHS with Rickards. Clintons relations. When we were in Tusc grade school, our language was not taught to us. Thankfully a classmate Joanne Rickard (a teacher) started a SKARURE curriculum that is going strong today with almost all students there, fluent in Skarure. It is so heart warming to hear our little kids speaking our ancient language. I am not fluent myself. But have some understanding of Skarure and Mohawk.

The six nations formed a true government. After who knows how many years of conflict. When they gathered every four years , to abolish laws that didn't work , and implement new laws. They would begin with a prayer. No, the Peacemaker was born Huron. Hiawatha was a great Orator whose wife and daughters were killed by the evil Tadadaho, who was a cannibal. (Mohawk) Hiawatha joined with the Peacemaker, whose name we do not generally speak, because he is so Holy. Among many beautiful things, together they "combed the snakes" from the hair of the evil Tadadaho, straightened him up, and through the power of peace, power and righteousness, convinced him to be a Man of Peace .Ever since, the traditional spiritual leader of the Six Nations and his title is "Tadadaho", and comes from the Onondaga Nation near Syracuse, NY. Our current Tadadaho is Sydney Hill.
