Cultures may vary a bit, but fishing is just one of those universal things that brings people together. Great episode!

You're absolutely right. One of my favorite moments in my life was just sitting on a dock in a tiny town in Costa Rica on the Pacific side, and an old man came down and started fishing. He pointed at his pole and it was clear he was asking if I wanted to fish with him. I nodded, he disappeared for a minute, and came back with a second pole and a larger tackle box. We just sat there for hours and fished together, it was really nice. My Spanish was bad, so communication was hard, but we still had a good connection by sharing the experience itself.

Some old memories Chief... When I was a sailor, I was on an LST. And we sometimes lowered the "fantail gate," Which was a big door at the stern, that opened up to allow amphibious vehicles to go in and out. But sitting at anchor, the gate served as a great platform to stand on, just a few inches above the waterline and cast our lines. One sailor, got hooked into a 'skate!' It had to be a monster, and it snapped the line! "The one that got away!" And almost took a sailor with it! lol

I love the message here. While we all have our place & parts to fill in our roles, no one is above anyone else as humans. Something that I have always recognised is the respect you have of all ranks not matter what. The fact that deck hands have caught & fed everyone including ranking officials is not lost with you, ever! Much respect & happy travels!

Hey, Chief! Whenever you're bound for the Columbia River again, please let me know. I live in Astoria and fairly regularly paddle out to the ships at anchor in my kayak. I'm ex-USN and spent a bit of time in the PI in 1984. Some of my favorite shipmates were from the PI, and I learned a lot from serving alongside them. We never got to fish from the ship (it was an aircraft carrier... that makes fishing tough!), but the cross-cultural benefits on the mess decks was undeniable! I love your videos and your dedication to professionalism.

As a Canadian married to a Filipina and now living in the Philippines, I throughly enjoyed this fish fiesta. Nothing beats fresh fish fried or roasted over hot coals. It just peels off of the bones. Chief, you don't like doing the dirty work with the fish... haha 😆 Thanks for sharing the human side of being a seafarer.

One of my best memories of my time in the service involved my CHENG. We had just completed a rather strenuous exam called OPPE(Operational Propulsion Plant Examination). We passed it with flying colors and no issues were noted. For this, our CHENG took the entire crew, well, everyone that wasn't on watch, to the base club and pulled out his credit card. We feasted like KINGS that night. No idea what the total damages were.

So many vivid memories of my travels around the the Pacific with Fijian crews. As well as fishing that happened at anchor, trawling off the stern of the oil tankers in the company I worked with, for tuna, wahu, dolphin mahi-mahi and an occasional barracuda was always popular, . Especially when you'd get the good skippers that would sail around the atoll reefs that abounded with wildlife. Conway Reef was notable, The crew caught enough fish to hire a refidgerated truck on arrival in Lautoka (Fiji) and send the catch by road to their families in Suva. As one Chief Engineer to another, thank you for refreshing my memories.

This one Reminded me of a story my father told med, from the time he was at sea as a marine engineer in the merchant fleet during the late 1940s to early 1950s, when, of all places, the ship he was serving aboard was laying at anchor somewhere off the coast of the Phillippines, at some time during the early part of 1948🙂. I think it started with some traders from a nearby village coming out to them in outrigger canoes, looking for opportunities to do trade with the crew aboard the ship. And from there it developed into much of the crew being taken ashore on the outrigger canoes for a sightseeing trip to the village ashore. In fact, my dad took some pictures of the occasion. And I inherited the photo album with the pictures in concern, after my mother passed away not so long ago (at 92). So, this video inspired med to have a look at the album and those pictures 👍🙂.

One of my most favorite meals while vacationing was when my late husband and I were in Santo Dominoca where I had selected fresh caught fish. They grilled it, and presented it on the plate without the intestines. My husband thought I would refuse, but I was in love with this offering. It was the best fish I had in a very long time. So fresh and just for me. Yes, it was almost whole but without the intestines, but was so good. I grew up with fresh fish caught and grilled to eat, so this was nothing new to me at all. Yum!
