Here's an easy way to potty train your puppy. I have a Chihuahua and the way I potty trained her when she was a pup, was I bought a two door dog crate that was 24 inches by 18 inches. At the same time, I also bought a solid plastic container that was 24 inches by 18 inches with high sides at Wal-Mart. So what I did is on one side of that plastic container, using a hack saw I cut out an opening big enough for a Chihuahua to ingress and egress the plastic container easily. As that plastic container then became my new customized doggy litter box. After I cut out the opening, I then filled the new customized doggy litter box with one inch of pine pellets that I bought at Tractor Supply Company. Pine Pellets are superior to kitty litter to work with because one, it virtually eliminates all odors, two, it is very easy to work with, three, it is good for the environment as it can be used for composting, and four, it is dirt cheap compared to the cost of kitty litter or pee pads. As I bought a 40 pound bag of the stuff at Tractor Supply Company for only $7.50 with tax and that one bag will last most of the year. Thus, after I cut out an access door on my new customized doggy litter box, I butted the door side of it to the side of the doggy crate with the doggy crate door opened. Then I used the other doggy crate door to put the puppy's bed and toys in the doggy crate. As the idea of it was the puppy wouldn't soil its bed and its play area inside the doggy crate and instead, it would go eliminate in the customized doggy litter box butted up to the doggy crate instead. You know what, it worked like a charm. As the puppy would live and play inside the doggy crate and then go eliminate inside the customized doggy litter box I butted up to the doggy crate. As I kept the puppy inside the doggy crate about 75 to 80 percent of the time in the beginning. As I didn't want the puppy to make accidents happen outside of the doggy crate and at the same time, learn bad habits. After three weeks, I began leaving the second door to the doggy crate open and then I closely monitored the puppy to ensure no puppy mistakes happened. But like a champ she would returned to her doggy crate and eliminate inside the customized doggy litter box 100 percent of them time. Therefore, after a week of 100 percent success, I relocated the customized doggy litter box to its permanent location and I closed the door in the dog crate the customized doggy litter box had previously been butted up to permanently. As now I have a perfectly potty trained puppy who never makes puppy mistakes inside my home. As using this method, my puppy literally potty trained herself. As for as the way I handle the management of the customized doggy litter box is any time I see dog poo inside the doggy litter box, I immediately use a litter box scoop to scoop it out and then flush it down the toilet. Then I clean the doggy litter box out once a week and to do that I bought an Arm and Hammer Sifting Cat Litter Box for like $14.99 at Wal-Mart. However, I don't use it as a litter box but only as a cleaning aid. So what I do, is I first make sure there is no poo remaining inside the litter box. Then when there is no poo inside the litter box, I lift up the doggy litter box and empty it contents into the Arm and Hammer sifter. Then I put the litter box back in its permanent location. When pine pellets are used as litter material, when a puppy or a cat, depending on the situation, urinates on it, the pellets disintegrate into saw dust. Thus, I used the Arm and Hammer sifter to sift out all the saw dust into the Arm and Hammer litter box below. When all that remains in the sifter are pine pellets, I empty the sifter back into the doggy liter box. Then I dispose of the saw dust in the Arm and Hammer litter box in the trash, as it doesn't have an odor. Then I replace the used up pine pellets in the doggy litter box with new fresh pine pellets. Usually about one to two scoops will do it. As I have found this method of potty management to be the simplest, most odor free, and by far the cheapest method there is. As with the aid of the Arm and Hammer Sifting Litter Box, I probably spend two to three minutes of my time cleaning out my doggy litter box a week. That's hard to beat. Not to mention that my puppy literally potty trained herself in the span of only one month with absolutely no puppy accidents whatsoever. Who else can say that? Oh yeah, another big advantage of using a doggy litter box is you don't have too worry about if its raining or snowing or if it's too hot or too cold outside, or even worry about taking your dog out periodically to relieve itself. To me, it's a perfect solution. And if you live in a high rise apartment, as opposed to a home, it's the only worthwhile solution, as far as I'm concerned. Oh yeah, if you want to later train your puppy to go outside, you should save some of the sawdust you would normally be discarding in the trash in zip lock bags. Then before you let your puppy out, go dump the contents of a zip lock bag where you preferably want your puppy to eliminate. Then go back inside and bring the puppy out to the designated spot with a leash. Do this repeatedly over the course of a week and pretty soon your dog will be doing his or her business right on cue where you want them to go like a champ.

I trained my dog to use a dog toilet. But he would not use it unless it was perfectly clean, so I would have to clean up every time he peed or pooed. Also, he never learned to 'hold it' since he could always go whenever he wanted. The biggest problem was that I couldn't just take him with me to a friend's house, because I'd be constantly worried he'd just go potty somewhere in the house.

My mixed breed puppy has some chihuahua in him. He is 10 weeks almost and I realized today that the spot he uses in the house is the nearest spot he can reach to the spot he uses outside. I bought this pen combination after seeing this video last December after I found a 7 wk old Chorkie that a couple of college kids had purchased and then couldn't keep. I got him off of Craigslist. This setup has been a blessing. As he has become more house trained I can let him out more and more. He is 9 months old now and most of the time he is out of the pen - I use it when I'm going to leave the apartment. My pen is set up in my living room, since I have no carpet in that room, so he is here while I work from my recliner. I got him fixed last week and the pen turned out to be a great solution for that, as well. He is supposed to wear the cone and lay low, so the pen made that happen. He is 15 lbs now - he is a big boy and we thought he was only going to be 8-10lbs - and he can't get out of the pen. Thanks for the idea!

He's just over 2 months old and I cant leave him out and about. I was thinking of getting a play pen that gives him more space but for now, this is all I can do. We get about 9 hours of together time in a day and he is learning where to go to the bathroom quickly, once he gets spot on with where to go, I will start leaving him out in the open with the crate open if he wants to sleep in there during the day. I feel guilty about it, but he likes going in on his own, falls asleep for the most part and doesn't really cry much anymore. I want to find a way to have him on the bed with me at night when I sleep but I am afraid he will go wee or poo on the bed and make a mess... hopefully in the next few weeks he will be solid and we can progress further.

@orchardlea4 жыл бұрын
Give her one stern no, and if she doesn't pay attention the first time, she's not going to the second or third, either, so just get her moving again. Keep her on a short lead at first, so that she's by your side, using an upwards tug of the lead if she tries to yank it (instead of trying to yank her back, which will just encourage her to fight it in the opposite direction - forwards). If you keep her moving forwards instead of stopping to smell and observe everything, she will gradually get accustomed to just concentrate on looking ahead rather than engaging with her surroundings. Make sure you're relaxed and focussed on the road ahead, too - she'll sense it if you're nervous. You can designate half a block before reaching your destination to let her sniff around and do her business before going back inside. Once (and this is probably going to be the work of a few weeks, at least) she has stopped engaging with her surroundings, you can start to give her some relax time during her walk again, but until she stops showing aggression, walks need to be training time. I've had success using this method. It can be really tough, especially at the beginning but it's worth it in the end!

What’s the point of training a dog to go in a crate at 2-3 months?
@realrebelli0n4 жыл бұрын
At a young age they learn and decide on what they love and what they hate or fear. So for example dogs that fear or hate car rides, or the sound of a hoover, do so because they didn't learn at a young age that these things are okay and actually useful. As an adult it's way more difficult to change because their personalities already did develop.

I would wait about 5 min and if she doesn't pee then you should take her back inside or wherever depending on where you are. My chihuahua is 2 years old right now and we are still trying to potty train him but whenever I take him outside he goes pee right away.

I have an 8 week old chihuahua and have a pee area in the livingroom and I crate with a pee pad in my room. When I put her on the pad I say 'pee-pee ca-ca'. I also have a 2 year old child so saying potty might confuse the pup and my 2 year old. I noticed she goes to the cats litter box so I have a shake litter pan and put a potty pad under the mesh and put a sprinkle of litter so she can smell it. So far she's taking to the shake litter pan. Still working on the crate at nite cause she cries. She is still a baby after all. I have 2 larger dogs and I noticed she does 'the dance' my older dogs do when their about to go out so I take advantage of that and say to her 'pee-pee ca-ca' to her and put her on her pad. I'll update how she does in a few weeks. 😁

I rescued my chi 10 yrs ago at age 3. I don't know his past history except that he was left alone for 13 plus hours a day. He has always been stubborn and very anxious. He allows no hugs, etc. I love him very much. Visitors are constantly barked at while wagging his tail. He thinks going #1 on any throw rug is the right thing to do, (all carpet was removed long ago) but #2 in the house is very rare. He has a doggie door that is open all day and he is rarely left alone. How can I teach him to stop barking at my visitors? I have tried to but without success and I know he understands my commands. Can you teach a stubborn old dog new tricks?
@amyhatfield95623 жыл бұрын
Yes, you actually can. My chihuahua is 2 yrs old. We are just now crate training him because we struggle with bedtime potty. If your chihuahua is barking at vistitors you need to let your chihuahua know that you let those visitors in and they are friendly. So if your chi doesn't feel like you are letting them in your chi will bark. Your chi could also being telling you that they might be dangerous which depends on the situation. Just let the visitors give your chi treats and play with her/him and your chi should be fine.

My baby cries (10 weeks) when I put her in crate for bedtime? I have tried giving her treats to get her in the crate, and I give them to her when she is in the crate to get comfortable. It is has sheepswool and her fave toys and potty pad. We keep her right next to the bed. WhAt am I doing wrong?

I adopted a 1 year old chihuahua, a girl, it very hard for me to welcome at home, she is very shy and sadly look, it's her 4rth day on us, even her tail still not come out or wagging, she ate and drink water, but she don't walk and run when I put down her on the floor always her heart beat faster the moment I take her. What best to do for her?

I HATE HATE HATE when people train chihuahuas on pee pads. It's so disgusting and teaches bad habits. Dogs pee outside, 365 days a year. Yes, even when it's cold or raining. That's what sweaters and jackets are for. Snow? Dig a path for them. It's not hard. Be a good dog owner and train your dog properly!

DO NOT listen to this advice, at the point where they are telling you that if your Chi is OVER 30 pounds to get a size of crate lets you know these idiots just took a general dog training article and turned it into a video with chihuahua keywords. Why does that matter?? Chi's ARE different than larger dogs and owners needs specific advice and telling them stupid stuff like generic advice is harmful not only to the dog but to the owner also. Shame on you, hope your $7 youtube check was worth the clicks.

8 hours in a crate, that is abuse...
@amyhatfield95623 жыл бұрын
No, really it's not. Some people have work and other places to be but 8 hours is not abuse as long as you take your dog/chihuahua out of the crate to eat, go potty, etc.
@amyhatfield95623 жыл бұрын
Plus some dogs sleep for more than 8 hrs, so the crate is only used for sleeping and if you are away from home.

I got a putty chihuahua last week and sadly, in this country, they give it away extremely young (27days). Watching your video, you talk about not starting before they are 2 months old but really I don't have much other choice so he is started and yesterday we got a little transporter which will be his new house(His new brother and sister are 4yrs old Pitbulls). I just want to make sure of his security and to best monitor his pee/poo time. So my question is.. is there any extra steps I should consider in his training regarding his young age ?
