She and her family are now housed. I never call CPS on a Native child. Minnesota is the worst state for enforcing ICWA, the Indian Child Welfare Act and more Native kids than ever are being lost to their families in the foster care system. Ain Dah Yung should be called. Native people are treated differently from other CPS cases and have had their children seized for generations. ICWA has not fully prevented this. Also I know many at the camps that grew up in the foster care system and were horribly abused. I mean horribly. This is a Native problem, not one for white people to decide. I worked at Ain Dah Yung for years. They're there to keep Indigenous kids OUT of a system which has decimated family ties. In her case (above) she was not tribe enrolled but a relative or tribal member should first be notified. I will NEVER allow anyone who works for me to call CPS on a Native child. This is a HUGE injustice in our system to not seek to place them with relatives. Most Native languages have no word for "orphan" because the relatives were the safety net.
