That's true but the original focuses more on Andy and his mom and their relationship, which makes it very cool and special in its own way. I mean, you really do care and love the family here. I do think it's the best one of the franchise because of that and also just the element of Chucky manipulating a child, plus us not knowing whether or not he is real are all horrifying psychological elements that obviously get lost after the reveal. I agree in the rest the human characters become kind of irrelevant and it really is more so about Chucky.

This is the movie that started my nightmares in life. Chucky was the reason i was scared of toys for awhile. Fun facts for those that know or don’t know: • Chucky loses his right hand in each installment from the original trilogy. In the last act, where Chucky attacks Andy while he's alone at his home, you can see Chucky's hairline is starting to recede and look more human-like. • The story takes place in three days. •The Good Guys animated sequence that Andy watches on TV was produced by the animation company Ruby-Spears. • The scene when Andy is crying that Chucky will come and kill him, the filmmakers had to make Alex Vincent cry on camera by telling him "Alex, think of sad things. Think about your parents dying." • Tom Holland: the photo of Andy's deceased father in the background in his bedroom is actually a photograph of the director. • The only Chucky movie in the series to be distributed by MGM until the 2019 remake. Every other Chucky movie is distributed by Universal who have retained the rights to the previous sequels and the original versions of the characters and story. • The Chucky films have always been accused of inspiring violence in children. One case linked to the series was a gang in Manchester kidnapping and murdering a 16-year-old girl. While they tortured her, they forced her to listen to recordings of the gang leader repeating the catchphrase "I'm Chucky, wanna play?" Director Tom Holland has always defended the first film from these accusations, stating that viewers of horror movies could only be influenced by their content if they were unbalanced to begin with. • All of Brad Dourif's voiceover work for Chucky was recorded in advance so they could match up Chucky's mouth with the words. Because of this, Dourif rarely ever appeared on set during the "doll" scenes. Instead, recordings of his voice would be played back for Alex Vincent to go by. However, Dourif did act out the doll's movements during rehearsals, as seen in the making-of videos included with the DVD. • The film was released on the same date (November 9, 1988) as the opening scene, when Charles Lee Ray transfers his soul into the doll. • The toy shop used in the opening scene was actually a Chinese restaurant that closed down in Chicago, on the corner of Wabash and Van Buren. Chris Sarandon even says the name of the street corner when calling for backup. Prior to the release of Curse of Chucky (2013), this was the only film in the series to mention Eddie Caputo, Chucky's partner in crime. • John Lithgow, Gary Oldman and Andrew Divoff were rumored to be considered to play Charles Lee Ray and voice Chucky. • According to director Tom Holland, the shot of Maggie falling to her death was achieved by having a stunt woman do the main shot followed by a concrete filled dummy when she hits the car which had charges underneath the windows to shatter them. Maggie's death scene originally had her being electrocuted while taking a bath. Don Mancini altered her death to her getting pushed out of a window instead, as he felt it would be more shocking and cynical. Her original death was reused for Bride of Chucky (1998), with Tiffany getting electrocuted.

This is one of the best horror/thriller movies of all time. All of the characters (well most of them) are very likeable, and Andy’s performance was really good. The effects are absolutely insane for the time as well! I would argue it looks better than a lot of modern CG, because it feels like it’s part of the environment. The man who voices Chucky (in every movie) Brad Douriff, has a daughter and even she’s in the franchise later! If you know what he looks like, you can see it in her face. She did a great job too. I will say, watching this as a kid vs adult is very different. I saw this in middle school and it scared the CRAP out of me for a long time. But since then I’ve obviously gotten over it, and it’s one of my favorite horror/thrillers. The first two are my favorite but all of the movies in the franchise are worth at least one watch just for the ride. There’s one that a lot of people don’t like, that I personally found enjoyable.

Originally Steven Spielberg was going to direct the film, as producer David Kirschner worked with him on An American Tail, but turned it down, until he picked Tom Holland to make the film after he was impressed by Holland's early horror film Fright Night 1985. William Friedkin, Robert Wise, Howard Franklin, Irvin Kershner, Joseph Ruben, Robert Altman, Jack Clayton Rocky Morty and Annabelle Jenkel were considered for director.

I think Spielberg was also involved in Universal buying the rights to later Chucky films, but that's cool he was a pick for the first one.

Why does rox want every super villain to be good 😂. First it was the orphan and now she's like "any world where chuck could be good". Hilarious lol. I missed this duo.

That's probably the Disney effect shaping people's minds today. Like, every villain has to now be misunderstood instead of being allowed to just be bad.

A great attention to detail is as the movie progresses the doll looks more human, more like Charles Lee Ray played by the great Brad Douriff. This movie as a child was my worst fear, now I love this movie! Pls watch them all!!

I've accidentally seen this when I was 4 years old. I don't even remember what happened in the movie but I know Chucky is the one that made me hate dolls.

The 2nd film was my first exposure to Chucky as a kid, and I went to great lengths to avoid it for a few decades before finally getting up the nerve to watch them at almost 30, 7-ish years ago. Now it's one of my favorite franchises and the one that scarred me is my favorite of the series.

I was born in '88 the year Child's Play was released. I definitely grew up with Chucky, it's awesome to see it still alive. The original creator wants to make a new movie that works in tandem with the TV show, and I gotta say I'm in!! 😂
