Seriously here, no mention is made of a retained placenta. The fact that there were male physicians in attendance and that they hampered the work of the midwives, along with the timing and nature of the onset of what became her lethal illness, the most likely candidate for this is a retained placenta. CCRN here. The other problem which is massively risky, you're correct, are pulmonary emboli. The custom of complete rest and laying flat for a couple hours is bad enough, but more than a week and there's going to be serious problems with clots either to the brain, the heart or the lungs. All three are fairly immediate death sentences. This poor woman was a victim of the times in which she lived and the ignorance of men in women's matters.

He also did not allow sick people anywhere near him or his son. During her pregnancy, Anne craved quails. Some courtiers blamed Jane's death on her overeating of delicacies. Others noted that Jane was neglected by her attendants after she gave birth.

Anne’s initials carving left at Hampton court is one of the few things that was not destroyed after Anne’s execution. Her mentioning anywhere was scrubbed so thoroughly, it’s probably the only thing that was left on display. And most likely by complete accident. I most definitely would have died along with My Child. Hard labor for 52hrs and an emergency C-section. This was over 40yrs ago, I highly doubt it would happen in this day and age, but I went through it without even Tylenol. My Daughter was 8lbs and 23 and a half inches long. I worn a size 12 in girl clothing before being pregnant

Which country did you have your baby, if I may ask. I had my son in South Africa over 50 years ago and by the time I had 20 hours of labour my doctor wanted to do a Csection. I didnt want one because I was too nervous. I am sorry today as such a long hard labour really leaves our bodies with permanent damage. I know in SA it is almost standard these dsys to do a ceaser if the labour is over around 12 hours. In fact, elective ceasers are almost normal. Doctors say it is safer for mother and baby.

It's called given birth to Henry 8 only male heir, and being abandoned by everyone just after the birth with the afterbirth still not expelled. And with a few ignorant servants who don't know what to do. So half the after birth is expelled a d half is still in Queen Jane who developed an infection and ended up dying, while everyone else was Celebrating Eddy's birth, Jane died in agony!! You would of thought that they would want Jane the incubator to be healthy since she was the only legal wife to have a son, but no, she did her job and was thrown away afterwards.!!

According to a modern midwife, the most likely cause of Jane's protracted labour was the baby not positioned well in the womb. I reckon it was dead lucky Edward didn't sustain any damage or die from his difficult birth.

Having had a horrific time conceiving, carrying and successfully birthing my 2 daughters, I sympathize with my Tudor-Era Sisters. By the time I'd borne my second daughter, I was SO OVER the whole "baby-making" experience..so no continued attempts for a son. And my husband, who was born in DROGHEDA IRELAND is, praise the appropriate Saint, conspicuously indifferent to the quest for a male offspring.There's a lot to be said for having a partner who doesnt need a massive pickup or male heir to prove his masculinity. This episode was a definite learning experience. First I went out to Google to find out when the question of who determined the sec of a baby was discovered (Nettie M Stevens, 1905). How many cannon were fired from the tower for Edward VI’s birth (2,000 CHARGES were fired from the Tower, but not 2000 Cannon. The Tower didn’t have such a mass of cannon available. They just kept firing those they had until they reached 2,000. I wonder if any of those cannon burst from being fired again and again?). When were the first pictures of a pregnancy available through the dissection of women in various stages. Michael Angelo evidently studied such in the 15th century. A doctor might have such a book with pictures but it still didn’t tell him to wash his hands or how to turn a breach birth. PAIN CONTROL: opium was known and used for birthing pains without damage to baby or mother for centuries prior to Queen Janes terrible Labor.

There was an author that had credentialed obstetric pros look at the physician's notes & other reported symptoms. The ob rns thought she probably had an embolism, which can happen in childbirth. After reading their input I think they were probably right. Also, no treatment for that back then. So, she threw a clot, most likely.

@@meeeka I wrote an article on the death of Jane Seymour, taking into account her symptoms, her time frame, the timeline of her illness and symptoms as well as other contributing factors and it's my opinion that the lengthy labour was caused by malpresentation, and that there was retained product, which became infected and ultimately caused Jane to die of sepsis. Some of those contributing factors were Jane's status as queen, the lying-in and not moving around a lot, the lengthy labour that tends to shred the membranes, Henry's inviting male physicians into Jane's birth and the 55 hours of labour causing a reduced capacity of her uterus to effectively empty itself. Symptoms of sepsis fit Jane's illness exactly; initially weakness and malaise, fever, delirium and a coma, then death. Her physicians also noted a significant "purge" and Jane seeming to recover a bit before getting very sick again. That purge could mean a large loose bowel movement or a significant quantity of pus and blood and material from her vagina. We don't know because they didn't specify what was purged but either or both are also symptoms of infection and sepsis

So... When i was in labor w/my l/o... which btw i was at best birthing facility in our area; beautiful, comfortable rooms.. Which of course is where you deliver if It's a vaginal delivery... And there was a TV in each room, & mom is encouraged to watch whatever you want ( Whatever you want within the confines of hospital cable packages lol).... So im, well, in labor... lol... And the doctor is "checking things out" down there... And all the sudden he popped his head out from between my legs, turns all the way around on his stool so that he was facing the TV & he just started staring at the TV for a second, and then says, "wth are you watching?" And i said "ummm, snapped..." upon which he just starts cracking up and said, "well this is a first, ive never delivered a baby while listening to an autopsy report..." I suppose here is where i should explain "Snapped" is a popular docuseries based on homicides committed by women. . I have an avid true crime interest... 90% of everything i read is either historical or true crime related... Anywho... we all had a jolly good laugh... and then he went back to checking my dilation 😳 lol But i tell this story in thinking about this Tudor standard of "not having scary pictures" in the birthing chamber or viewing too much "suggestive" art work... and I can only imagine what one of those male tudor writers would've thought about the entertainment we Generally consume in today's world... i mean by their way of thinking, my 7 y/o should basically be a mini ted bundy right now 🤣

Many cultures pray to saints for a child, your tone makes it seem like you look down on anyone who is religious? You don't need to be religious yourself but many cultures today still have these practices. Maybe I'm reading into it too much. I paid to have my babies and myself blessed after giving birth, it is supposed to happen at 40 days. If a baby is to die, has difficulty after birth there is always a priest available to do a quick baptism.

And btw, when it comes to the Church and baptisms, that has always been an option for any lay Christian in an emergency, men or women. And it's hoped an unbaptized child will enter heaven but baptism offers an extra security measure, kind of like a vaccine against eternal death and hell. Stillborn babies were still given Christian burials in the Church yard, unlike other condemned souls (i.e. suicides, excommunicated, etc) who were not allowed this benefit. There is still the provision, then or now, within the Catholic Church for performing masses and prayers for souls in Purgatory or if it's uncertain their baptismal status. Clearly neither you nor the other "expert" are well versed in Christian practices or Church history. Thanks at least for mentioning the reasonably now statistic on death in childbirth and how over dramatized that is in period dramas.
