Being transgender is not a sexuality, it's a gender identity. We speak to Lewis Hancox and Fox Fisher to find out what it means to be transgender and to hear their advice for young people struggling with their gender identity.

I am a trans guy and this stuff should be taught in schools! The Internet can only be reached if you search for trans things in particular, whereas school, everyone learns

+Jay W We think that is a really great idea! Do you think it is something that could be part of Sex and Relationships education or should gender identity be taught separately?

As far as I know, gender identity is on the curriculum and is meant to be taught in UK schools as part of PSHE, but it's often left out

The Wacko Green alien Yeah, I'm pretty sure my school mentioned the possibility that some of us could be gay, but that was it. You could bring it up with someone at your school (as both sexuality and gender identity are supposed to be covered)?

SimplyHuman Yeh. The teachers support me in being trans more than my own family. They do need to talk about it tho.

Help. I am a transgender male. I believe that a lot more can be done to educate teachers on how to accept transgender students and accomodate them in their classes. Especially in pe. I also think they should strongly avoid having gender Hungary seating plans when they don't know the gender their students identify as.

There defiantly needs to be stuff on tg stuff as some ppl use offensive terms because of them being used so much and not knowing they are offensive and also you dont need a sex change to have the right pronouns used and have the name you want used

Nooooo!! The asterisk is bad. It implies that anything other than "trans man" and "trans woman" are not trans. Just use...... Trans. No asterisk.

+A very large and very fast slug I agree too! We flirted with using the asterisk for a few years, to help explain how it's an umbrella term, but it's more common to leave the * out now and just use the word 'trans'.

Hey, another trans guy here. Whilst I think it's important to acknowledge how far we've come, with transgender figures such as Caitlyn Jenner and non-binary individuals like Ruby Rose coming to the forefront, we still lack a basic foundation of understanding which could easily be established in schools and as part as PSHE or Life Skills lessons. Tools like KZbin and the Internet have helped visibility a great deal but there's still more work to be done! Thanks again for the informative video ChildLine

+Matt Wright Thank you for your support! We really appreciate your positive feedback about our video and totally agree that a foundation of understanding could help so many people, both with awareness for others and how we view ourselves :)

Thanks for sharing - writing a letter can be a good way to plan out what you want to say and to give it to someone when the time feels right.

Needs to be taught in schools. most kids wont understand it and bully people because its different but if you really teach the kids in schools what trans people go through and show that we are like everyone else it will be more accepted.

i dont think genders are completely arbitrary, i think theres probably some objective standards that can classify people as male or female with, like the x and y chromosones. i also dont think its necessarily a good thing to let people transition.
