The Last Mile

The Last Mile

5 ай бұрын

Richard Cabral's journey from the streets of East Los Angeles to becoming an influential speaker, actor, and criminal justice advocate is a story of overcoming immense obstacles.
Growing up in a community where gangs were a part of the fabric of everyday life, Richard faced challenges that many could not imagine. His early exposure to violence and incarceration at just 13 years old could have defined his future.
But it's not just about where you start; it's about where you're going. Richard's story is a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit to transcend circumstances and rewrite destiny. Like the transformative programs offered by The Last Mile, Richard's life underscores the importance of mentorship, education, and the opportunity for a second chance. Let's embrace the power of change and support initiatives that offer hope and a new path forward.
🎧 Tune into The Last Mile Radio to hear more stories like Richard's and discover how technology training and education can be a beacon of hope in the most unexpected places.

Truth. It’s important to have this level of self-awareness and hope someone is brave enough to break the cycle.

Yes!! Your right on the target. To everyone seeing this comment, the sooner you take accountability for your wrong doings by hanging out with the wrong crowd the quicker you will break the cycle. At the end of the day you must break the cycle of the street life. Its glory and entertainment is not worth the risks. Please do yourself and your loved ones a favor and become someone the youth can look up to!!

So much truth. Even though he from LA and I’m from Santa Clara. He’s from the South and I’m from the North both our story’s are still the same. Gente divided but in the struggle we still see the same chaos.

Kind of sounds like my life only. The thing is, my mom left me at age 11, and my dad kicked me out of the house at age 13 in 1993. My uncles were gang members in South Central LA on the Eastside. I was homeless, living in the varrio doing the gang bang thing for a year before my moms brother found me and took me to live 200 miles from LA now im 43 living a good life with my wife and kids raising them better then I was and giving them what I never had a happy home with lots of love

I’m 3rd generation Chicano from Boyle Heights ELA, and my father raised me NOT TO BE LIKE HIM. He’d call me from prison on report card day and make sure I was aware that if my grades weren’t better when he got out, it would be my ass! It was normal grew up thinking that when you go to a family party or any party, you drank & got drunk. I’m making sure my kids know that Dad doesn’t have to drink at parties. When I do it’s maybe 1-2 beers and sometimes nothing at all. As a parent it’s up to us to set the example and set the tone!!!

With Jesus you can break all generational curses. As soon as i came to know Him i was unshackled. But i wont lie, from time to time I'd allow the shackles back on me, but it doesnt have to be there. You are either in bondage because you dont know the Lord, rejected the Lord, or because you're slow like that

I understand it's a struggle, but it's still a choice. Many have been in the same situation and not choose gangs. Some people become drunks because their father was a drunk, others don't drink at all because their father was a drunk. It's all about choices man.

All BS bro. I grew up I'm the valley with migrant parents. My parents had less opportunities and knew even less than cholos who were already 1st or 2nd generation. I grew up a poor Mexican as well, surrounded by gangs and violence. We all know what's right and what's wrong bro. You could have chosen the right path at 13 too. Like I did. I'm glad to see you finally grew to take care of your family.

You can be sensitive if you want BUT when the demo says minorities are prevalent in the penitentiary system thats because of their Mentorship. Its a never ending cycle. Sure you got your caucasians but blacks and latinos dominate the system specially in California. I for one could have easily followed this path since my buddies where all in this lifestyle but i deviated from them soon as high school ended to pursue a career in the corporate world and when I looked back why i did not end up like my friends I could only think about my parents both of them where always there for me even though i use to come hime at 4-5 am in the morning and sometimes did not follow their rules. It makes all the difference.

it's not so much about playing a "victim" or "making excuses" it's about learning to see what actually happened. Because most of us believe it was our fault and we thought we weren't good enough. We had accepted it as the truth, the only truth we knew. It's a process to grow and change and know and accept what actually happened and not just run away and hide. It may not be your life, but it's ours. We don't all come from happy loving homes, we don't all grow up the same, having access to the same opportunities. By hating all you do is create divide and separation between us. It's called healing bro. You can't learn to smile and love yourself unless you look at the things that hurt you.
