I recently re-read Aristotle and Dante and I forgot remembered how good seeing yourself in books is. Also in that book Dante struggles with identifying himself as Mexican. I participated in the Asian readathon and it was great. Even though I'm not of those cultures there are small things that remind me of mine sometimes and it feels nice.

Ashley, I can relate so much to feeling ashamed of your culture and depriving yourself of books, music, and films that represent where you come from. This is something I did for many years, and it was only within the past couple of years that I started to embrace my Hispanic heritage and language. I’ve recently started to see some books come out that are written by people who look like me and feature characters that represent my culture. It’s truly an empowering feeling! ❤️

I know what you mean about representation - I never saw Indian-Australian people in literature and in media to the point where I used to be embarrassed to be Indian and admit that I like Bollywood. Seeing myself represented in books like When Dimple Met Rishi and other YA lit that has come out since then featuring Indian main character's has been honestly so amazing and I hope this continues so that other young people of colour growing up as a product of diaspora won't feel as isolated. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the matter too 💖

on the topic of ur rant, i feel the same way! when i was younger i used to read books by black authors but the stories would also perpetuate the stereotype of black people and it made me a little ashmaed and upset so I would always avoid books like that! But recently when The Hate U Give came out it made me realize that just because those books arent always about my life personally, it's still good to read those stories and open your mind to read stories!

hi Ashley! I really loved this video as usual and wanted to talk about a book myself that made me feel "seen". I don't know if you've read it, but I got so excited when I heard The Astonishing Color of After by Emily X.R. Pan was coming out. not only did it feature a half Asian, half White mc (like me), but she was half Taiwanese, more specifically, which is what I am. I already felt seen having a biracial Asian mc in a book, but having her be of an ethnicity that is not widely know at all really, really brightened me. the book was amazing, of course. luv ur diversity talk 💌💌

Someone actually has the book "Out"??? That was one of my favorite books! I remember working at Borders (god that was so long ago) and suggesting that book to almost everyone who enjoyed mysteries but it never caught on. Soooo happy to see it in a booktube video like this. It needs more attention.

100% feel you on the representation rant. The only muslim character I read about as a kid was hassan from an abundance of katherines and it made me like the book way more than it deserved lol. A very large expanse of sea made me feel soooo seen but I wish it had come to me when it could’ve really helped me instead of now as a cynical adult. I’ve seen plenty of people that look like me in tv and movies but they always get cast as the bad guy OOF. Keep fighting the good fight yay diversity

thank you for the talk about representation! I started to realize how much I needed more Asian American representation when I got into kpop and kdramas this year, so I am glad to say that I am also excited for Wicked Fox! For me, I am a Filipino American, and I have enjoyed Filipino TV shows, movies, and music ever since I was a little girl. But reading books that feature Filipino characters was definitely lacking and I was shocked that my bookshelf has not one. I recently discovered the book Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribay, a Filipino author and the book features a Filipino American character and a serious topic regarding The Philippines. It comes out June 18 if you would like to check it out! I was so happy to have discovered this book, and I started actively looking for more books written by Filipino authors (I found some middle-grade books and even though I'm 18 I want to read what I have been deprived of in my childhood). It is definitely empowering, and I get emotional thinking about this. I am definitely going to be more aware now :) Sorry this message is a bit long but thanks for inspiring me to have these reflections
