That’s my home, where I lived for 17 years. The place of my first job was in this video. My family is still there without power or water. I have no idea if they’re ok as I haven’t been able to contact them. I can’t explain to others the grief of so much loss of our community.😢 But thank you for posting; these updates are all many of us have. **UPDATE** I have been in communication with my family, they are safe. I extend my heart to those that did not receive such news.

We hope that you will find the strength and spirit to rebuild what has been lost. The world is with you! Greetings from The Netherlands.

Hi from Bryson City! I lived in Arapahoe back in 1991 for a year, then we had to move to Florida because there was no work anymore for my husband in boat building due to Desert Storm. He had worked for years Down East with Parker Boats designing and making up the first fiberglass forms when Parker Boats started and othe r places building and repairing boats. I really miss being close to the ocean, but you can see the mountains are not terribly safe either.

Same here. My family and I were there on the 22nd for an event at the meadery and we were talking about coming back to do touristy stuff sometime soon. No one in WNC expected this, we didn't even know there was a storm coming at all until like the day of. Caught completely off guard. I grew up on the NC coast and those 18 years of hurricane experience did nothing for me because we just had no clue we needed to prepare for anything. My family at the coast started texting me asking if I was prepared like hours before it hit. That was the first id heard of it.

@@Daughter.of.wolves Not to sound rude or anything, but I was periodically checking the national hurricane center forecast for this storm. They had warnings for Asheville and other mountain communities in western NC and eastern TN that 30+ inches of rain could come down in a few hours from this storm on Thursday night Friday morning. Even still I never expected this much destruction to come from it, but I figured there would be major flooding. I don't understand why the local weather reports didnt try and make a bigger deal of this storm beforehand. Seems like everyone was just focused on Florida. Thats why I dont bother watching them, just go straight to the source.

@@nev.catalyst7478 Rainfall Forecast maps were all I needed to see to know something catastrophic was likely to happen. The entire region between Asheville and Marion was shaded in dark red and/or pink and/or white on Sept 23rd, 24th, 25th, and 26th. It never fluctuated. I also feel like the already-saturated ground was poorly accounted for. *New* incoming rainfall of 12-20 inches from Helene is much more impactful when the water has no normal drainage route available. And yes, as usual, the landfall is always more widely discussed due to peak storm "intensity" at that moment. So many places can handle hurricane winds; so few places can handle hurricane flooding.

My wife and I had just exchanged our vows in April 2011. We embarked on our honeymoon without a set destination or itinerary. We fortuitously ended up here. The people, the river, the village, Laura's restaurant at the time, and the bed-and-breakfast room we rented with the looming rock overhead-everything was simply enchanting. Since then, we have made numerous day trips to Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, as that's not too far of a drive. Now my heart hurts. I see the people who did nothing wrong get hurt in such a violent way. Just know this. You are strong, tough, and you will rebuild. It will take time and patience, but when you reopen for business, my wife and I (along with our son) will rush to get back and celebrate your victory over this hell that happened to you. Sincerely, The Gotts

For me, this is too much eerily like what we went through in New Orleans. People were so critical and judgmental of us and I get that, but we thought we had strong levees and pumps designed by smart engineers that would hold the water back. Of course we should have known better but we had been through dozens of hurricanes and we got a false hope. I never want to say what another would do in these situations because I don't know. I just want to get help to these people. I have admired that area as being the most beautiful in the United States. Wonderful folks in these gorgeous mountains and pray you are getting help.

That why you should always be grateful for what you have in your life no matter what we go through. Even if you don't have much,a little money,a rusty car,a little home, family dysfunctions, addictions, still have to get up everyday and be thankful. Also make the best out of life no matter the situation, and enjoy it as much as you can. I pray the victims of the lives lost, the possessions lost, can gain the strength to pick themselves up and come together through this difficult time. keep judgement out of it and become stronger, work together, have a partner to watch your back and to lead you to make the right decision.Lots of time we are alone but we cant do it all on our own. Open your hearts and work together without judgement.

People are talking about flood insurance, but remember that the last time this happened was in the 1800s. No one would expect Biltmore Village, in Asheville, to flood. That was due to the amount of rain, not proximity to water.

My question was it still a Hurricane or was it a tropical storm? NC did not receive any kind of warning that it was going to be like this! The path of the Hurricane was well off from Carolina. I don’t understand what really happened here. I’m from Fayetteville NC and out of all 46 years of my life, I have NEVER seen anything like this. It’s very heartbreaking. Prayers, love and hugs sent out to all that have been affected……

No, it was no longer a hurricane when it got there. What was left of Helene was pulled into the stalled upper level low that had been already raining on them for at least 2 days. These two storms merged into a monster rainmaker with very gusty winds.

@@sfdottie The bridge section itself is still there. Everything that was on the bridge appears to be gone. The section that you see that is missing is the land that the bridge was connected too, over toward the parking area. Where the little red roofed building and paths down to where the river's edge used to be.

I can't begin to wonder how they will return these beautiful rivers to their former beauty. All the construction debris can be removed and recycled or burned but those streams and rivers will take a long time to recover. My heart and prayers o out to all the people who have had so much placed upon them. We were without power for 3 daysand thought that was terrible but after watching all these videos I am embarrassed and ashamed. These people have a long road ahead of them.
