Big night markets are a lot of the same. You need to visit small town night markets that are only open once a week. My wife's hometown nightmarket is only on Saturday. They have the kid rides and games as well as the cheap clothes and food. Also, I am with Rose, Taiwanese sausages are best plain. At most rub some garlic on it. The flavor of the meat is the best. We make our own sausage here to get that flavor. One thing you didn't try that is one of my night market favorites is TakoYaki. I know it is more Japanese, but that is also part of Taiwan's heritage.
haha thanks but I don't think my Chinese is good enough for an entire video

Oh I see. This is good to know. It sounds like night market in Taiwan is like “farmer’s market” in Canada. It’s not for pictures and trendy drinks, it’s to get fresh food for the week directly from the farmer (or someone pretending to be a farmer..)
Fun video! Rose is cool. I like big night markets. It's fun to compare the night markets in different countries.

Please don’t misunderstanding Taiwanese night market culture. The Market is one of our local lifestyle. It’s not for tourism, basically!
@somethingsomething4043 ай бұрын
Are tourists welcome? I understand you say it’s (main?) purpose is not tourism, but should a tourist not go? Or maybe it’s more like a “farmers market” in Canada where it’s more like a grocery store than a restaurant stall. It would be strange if tourists took over the store in Canada where I get my food too!
You're right for the most part - that most "type of food" you can find in night market across major cities in Taiwan are more or less the same. But if you pay attention to the food then you could find that each night market usually specialize in certain food then others - for instance you could find amazing 胡椒餅 in 饒河夜市 that you couldn't pretty much in most other night markets. And you could find the best oyster dish that's not the same as other places. So for me I look for the specialties in these night markets

From a Taiwanese's perspective, with a lot of experiences fooling around the night markets over the whole Taiwan, I would say each night market has its signature foods and a variety of mixed business, it's interesting to explore the differences between each other and find new stuff from time to time. That's how Taiwan night markets evolve and thrive over the time with the creativity from local people.

Great video, night markets are great. You are right, I don't remember going to any in China. Lots of wet markets, but no night ones...
The Night Market in Hualien is my favourite, there's alot more stuff to do with games and sometimes live music. You can also get some aboriginal style food that's not seen in night markets in Taipei/Taichung

There are still night markets in China, but I believe they are mostly in the second or third tier cities. Hualien night market in Taiwan 🇹🇼 is one of the most diverse and also most modern. I lovin it! Great video Prozzie!

The night market in hualian is pretty unique, the greenery, the square and lights when those are setup, the singing, the fighter jets overhead, the dog that helps sell quava, the ”我是垃圾桶“, fan fair is kind of the same but there is a unique feel to the place for sure that differs from some of the other night markets. Personal favorite markets are in old streets, not really night markets so much, its very cosy. 10/10, the night markets in larger cities they have their feel to them but you kind of need to go to a few and often to get the 'feel'

I prefer the country night markets with all the airsoft games, ring toss where you can win beer, and fishing games. There's a good one in the outskirts of Taipei called 樹林興仁花園夜市, sometimes they even have performers there (diablo, fire spinners, break dancers, etc).

I love Taiwanese fruits. It’s one of the things that are overlooked in KZbinrs travel videos about Taiwan. There’s so much and they’re ridiculously ripe and good. Yeah I feel night markets are mostly the same but nice when I want night market foods haha. I think Taipei has a few markets that have a more special food shop unique to that market that I haven’t had before. So I do want to go try them out.

sanya still had some small night markets. im sure you can still find some off the beaten path around china. I found one in Shanghai in the middle of nowhere, but it was completely depressed. we didnt buy anything lol my girlfriend being from harbin, thought it was very strange. but they do try to sneakily vend some noodle, fruits, etc under some bridges in the outskirts of shanghai. it reminded me of the good ol days. but ive been back to canada a year now. hoping to come to taiwan and try living there again. i lived there for a year in 2013 before the mainland.

I agree with you that most night markets are quite the same, selling the same stuff, as a tourist in Taiwan you may feel fresh and exciting to any one of the night markets, but if you live in Taiwan, you will loss interests quickly to visit night markets, because they are almost the same, thank you for being honest to tell your point of view . By the way your Chinese is very good, would like to see more videos to see you talking with local people.

Night markets do tend to have similar types of stores. And it is as you say, any good ideas are copied to other night markets. With night market's barrier to entry being pretty low, the effect propagates quite fast. But I think this is not much different from malls, where similar effects can be observed, just slower. So instead of looking generally, one should at the standout stalls to differentiate night markets.

6:30 The signboard reads: 【The nostalgic flavor was popular in Taiwan in the 1960s】 Not that shop's been here for 60 years. 😂 I think your observations about night markets in Taiwan are very accurate. This is indeed like a domino effect, and people used to think that the first domino was Fengjia Night Market, where many of the latest night market things would be created, and then similar ones would appear all over Taiwan very soon. However, the current situation has changed a bit, and it has become a street vendor that appears on China’s TikTok and Xiaohongshu. Such vendors will soon appear in Taiwan’s night markets. (Sorry, I used Google translation, which may make the content less accurate)
I’ve been to China 7 times since 2008 the last time was 2018 Chinese New Year I was really surprised to see no night markets no street food and no fireworks things have changed there for the worst theses days. We really want to come to Taiwan but airfare is still to high would have to go last two weeks of December

I am really confused, why do you guys say "no night markets no street food" in China? what is your definition of "night market" or street food? just by watching other KZbinrs' video, I see there are tons of street food and night markets, e.g. the muslim street in Xi'an is famous for its street food. And there are a lot of similar streets in different cities of China.

The night market near the university normally quite new to compare the night market near the temple and sell the similar stuffs. Keelung 廟口 night marke, 饒河 night market and some older night market in Taipei are really it owns unique style. Unfortunately, Taichung is a new city compare to other big city in Taiwan. So doesn't have much old night market The 忠孝 night market or 中華 night market might barely could count...
