The "dessert zongzi" that you didn't like looked like a jianshui zong (碱水粽). It's made by first soaking glutinous rice in a food grade lye water solution, potassium carbonate, which causes a chemical reaction that changes the texture. It also imparts a very distinctive taste and turns the color yellow. It's kind of a polarizing food. Some people are obsessed with it, while others can't stand it. It is often served with a sweetener like honey, osmanthus syrup, or sugar. Some versions also have a sweet red bean filling, but most are just a dense wad of lye-treated rice.

We love ZhongZi. They are so good. We usually put Thai sweet chili sauce on them. My wife makes them more like the first one, but in the more traditional shape.

You need local friends to show you the proper way to eat zongzi. Zongzi is often served with special dipping sauces, similar to how Thanksgiving turkey is served with cranberry sauce or gravy. Especially for the sweet kind, the dipping sauce is honey.

My uncle and grandma lives within the same community but next apartment down from the second zongzi shop 😂 I’ve been past many times but have been! Will need to go the next time I’m in the country!
I wasn’t expecting someone to try to show you the Bible on his phone haha. It was almost like you were in America. My favorite type is like the first one but also with peanuts and a shiitake mushroom in it too. If it’s a more plain one then I like putting sweet chili sauce on it. Sometimes soy sauce or that thicker soy sauce on it. It’s interesting that this tradition may be fading a bit for Taiwan. My parents in the US and all their friends go to their house and make a bunch of zongzi for everyone. They sometimes put on an open festival and get the local non Asian community to try it too.

BTW - I believe you got your first one from the area around the Confucius Temple. I used to live around there. That apartment building is used to house old KMT military veterans and their families. That's really old, traditional Taichung.

The first one is a Huzhou Zongzi from ZheJiang. If you go to Ding tai Feng, their shanghai Zongzi is the same as this style. It's my favorite as that's what I ate growing up (my grandparents are from ZheJiang). Glad you liked it so much!

most ppl dip hot and sour source for all savory zhong zi , and last one you need dip brown sugar
You should eat them with sauce! That’s why you think it’s pale! OMG… We usually eat it with spicy-sweet sauce or the traditional sauce which is soy sauce mixed with sesame oil and chili flakes and garlic beside that southern ones would add more peanut powder and cilantro. The way you eat Zongzi just like eating Poutine without cheese and gravy and rate it too pale. 😂
The last sweet rice dumpling needs to be dipped in brown sugar to make it delicious.

Actually, historical evidence suggests that the Dragon Boat Festival and the practice of eating Zongzi predate the story of Qu Yuan. The festival originally celebrated the summer solstice, and rice dumplings were offered as part of the rituals. The association with Qu Yuan was likely added later, possibly during the Han Dynasty, as his story became more popular and was integrated into the festival's traditions.

You're very lucky to find 湖州粽, it's my favourite! It's not a traditional type of Taiwanese zhongzi because it's brought to Taiwan from China after Chinese Civil War (1949). That's why its shape is not the same as the regular ones. They would marinade the rice before cooking when making this kind of zhongzi, which is why it's very flavourful.

The sweet one is eaten as a dessert, people usually cut them into small pieces dipping with honey. It’s very lovely eaten the right way, I wouldn’t try eaten it bland, the taste would be weird. Usually, zotsui is eaten by dipping into a special sweet and spicy sauce, I hope you enjoy them next time in a more traditional way:)))))

It's just a mythological story that Kmt brought to Taiwan because they wanted Taiwanese to be identified with them. When I was a kid almost no one in my village knew who Chiyan was, not to mention the mythological story. The Formosan indigenous, Hakka and many people in Southeast Asia have had the custom to carry rice or other food wrapped in the leafs of bamboos or banana when they had to work in the fields or jungle.

Your first one isn’t the traditional Taiwanese rice dumpling, it is more Singaporean/Malaysian version. As for why you stomach is very not well, it is because the rice that they used (糯米) are hard or slow to digest so that’s why the stomach isn’t coping even for a normal Taiwanese. They usually recommend 2 rice dumplings Mac per day.

Why are you so handsome? Even more handsome than a movie star. I have been following you for a long time, especially when you wear black sunglasses, you are so handsome that people want to fall on you~ Why is a KZbinr so handsome?! Every time I see your videos, I get shocked~ 為何你長這麼帥氣,比電影明星還要俊俏。關注你很久,尤其戴上黑墨鏡的時候,簡直是俊美到讓人想撲到你身上去~ 很受不了,為何一位KZbinr 這麼帥氣 ?! 每次看到你的影片都會讓我電到不行~
I can’t imagine eating the zongzi as is. I need to have some sauce and maybe chili sauce/oil. Here in the states it’s not so easy to get and it’s not as tasty and the ones in Taiwan.

You need to sit down and get the proper dipping sauce. Usually zhongzi is light in taste so most people take it with garlic soy sauce or syrup for the jelly zhongzi.
