When you have a hurricane that rips through your community and 100’s of people with no shelter and all hotels, schools, hospitals damaged or destroyed, bringing in a flatbed with these would be a God sent. You could use them for emergency medical care or a school room. Thank you so much for you kind compliments. 💞

Not real secure from intrusion, but neither is a wattle and daub "stucco" house that costs a third of a million. The code bulldozer would take it out in a week. Cute Chinese puzzle. Not sure where I could get away with living in it. Money is evil, so this is easier where there is less of an economy. Find your own loophole.

These would be great for emergency situations, especially hurricane victims. You could have a bunch already loaded on a ship and just deploy the ship to the location, offload and set up. In a couple of days you have an emergency camp set up that's way more sanitary than tents.. Once the people can get back in their homes, you clean these up, fold and load them up, ready for another emergency. These are quite genius, "made in China" or not. Someone needs to help fund these for the red cross.

i'd say this is the answer to the problem of housing the worlds homeless but then i keep forgetting there's no lack of houses... in the way there's no lack of food we can give for the hungry...what's lacking is our desire to spread the wealth around. But a great way to recycle shipping containers, and hopefully this will get to be used for those most in need. I've seen some of those "Tiny Home" shows and some of them are phenomenally expensive when you do a comparison of "dollar to square ft" value. When a "tiny home" is a luxury item you know something went wrong along the way.

What is more important are the invisible elements: plumbing, electrical, insulation, foundation etc. At least they can make a solar roof on top. it would be cool if all the sewer/water tank, pump, drainage, ac (heat and cool), battery, solar panels all came out of that container with ready hookup. The roof top area for 40ft container with this design is enough for 10-30kw solar panels, which is more than enough for a one bedroom living.

Is there a danger that water might leak in during rain? What do they cost? There are a lot of questions this presentation didn't address. Maybe they are that fantastic, but I don't know. @Elias Boudinot Try living homeless for just three days with $30. Seriously really try it. Not this reality tv celebrity bull. The real deal. The lowest I felt was after being given a toilet roll, tooth brush and bar of soap in a clear plastic bag and then being photographed by newspaper reporters when leaving a disaster relief station with that in my hand. Later, seeing the photos of our disaster sold in entertaining coffee table books made me feel better. Now seeing the appeal court case lawyers arguing our case with the perpetrators who have been already found guilty. Ten long years in the courts with lawyers paying themselves $5000 an hour. So far we're just hoping to live long enough to see an outcome. Ten years ago they destroyed every single thing, every memory, every photograph everything. And still they argue. Couldn't happen to you? Dream on. Several countries have plans, cast in stone to have you living in caves if the circumstances arise.

I built this same structure for about 3 yrs in Texas about 10 yrs ago, the mechanics were the same but we had a different locking system and it only took us about 3 min to set up…our aluminum extrusions had epoxy thermal breaks in them and each building consisted of roughly 56 extrusions…I was the guy that cut all the aluminum and we used SIPs for the walls…built about 3 different models ranging from 230ft sq-430ft sq…and yes, everyone of them leaked in the rain due to the hinge design and other gaps in the connection of the walls and such…still was a pretty cool idea though, just needed much more r&d to be successful

Some years back the mid to late 70's there was an outfit named Magnolia that had an expandable trailer home on this principle. When closed it was towable day or night much like an 18 wheeler trailer but when open it expanded to a small but comfortable (I believe) 3 bedroom home. It came fully furnished with all the appliances (well you know about the quality of such furniture). When all was said and done however as long as you weren't putting in in a tornado or Hurricanie area it would have made a decent starter home for a new small family.

i'd live in one of these things in a second. its nicer than my "affordable" housing apt. this could be the end of homelessness, ridiculous property values and the "affordable" housing scam. and the govt won't have to pay landlords their extortion demands anymore. so what's the price of this marvelous contraption? its like track housing. could you imagine a community, a neighborhood street lined with these? each with their own little yards and gardens? where do you hook up the plumbing, power and phone line? make them with solar panels attached. its a great solution to many problems so i won't expect in america it'll ever be used. in the good ole u. s., if the rich don't get richer, it don't get done.

It was an amazing structure used as a portable product display facility and customer entertainment structure.

Ok. A twenty foot shipping container's inside floor dimensions are 7.7ft X 19.4ft or almost 150 sq ft. which isn't anything to speak of. However, multiply that by 3 and you have 450 sq ft, or 50 sq ft smaller than my college studio flat. It was livable so as long as I didn't own things, like bicycles, large fridges, W/D, etc... My bedroom was my living room and I had decent kitchen storage and one really long clothes closet that was half filled with my GF's stuff until I dumped her for a minimalist that would only use her phone for necessary things. And when she left my apartment was always cleaner than when she came over. I married her. Back to the container. Now, if it was a high cube, you could insulate the ceiling much better and have an AC/Heater vents up there. You could even taper the roof a little for better rain sheeting, which is so much better. My colleague has an acre a few miles from a lake in a heavy pine area at 4000ft elevation with zero zoning laws. Meaning he can do whatever he wants on his property. All he had to do was to palm a crooked city official to get it on paper and have it sanctioned by the state, which cost him more money. Now since his dad owns a shipping container storage yard, my colleague found 20 containers over the past decade that were written off as a loss. So my buddy would get them for free. Next, he would spend company time and use company materials to convert them into truly nice insulated office, which is how he explained them to anyone who would ask. Then slowly but surely, he would have a few shipped over night up to his mountain clearing that he had put asphalt to and had the containers set into place. He then got some fencing material and went around his whole property and stacked razor wire in front of it so no-one would even attempt scaling the fence. It looked like hell and it was hell for anyone. Plus the gate was automatic and coded into your cellphone and the codes were changed daily but the system recognized your cellphone number if you forgot. But each 40ft shipping container had solar power and he was planning on getting power walls but the cost was too high. Each were like a tiny 320 sq ft apartment with truly expensive appliances, that were all ran by sola panel a top each container. The containers were situated so that in the hotter summer days, agricultural shade clothes covered all parking and walking areas. The first two containers were for building supplies and tools, and a cot for when he would stay for weeks on end. His wife didn't mind because it meant she could retire early. I visited him after he got his first two units going. He even had two water storage silos, one for supply water and the other for the Fire Dept as a gesture of good will, though they would never need it. During the growing season, he let some people grow veggies so as long as he got his cut. He would also have someone making snacks for his tenants. Then last year I heard he wasn't feeling well so I went up to visit him. He was getting over pneumonia he caught at the hospital after getting his physical. It was late spring and all 28 containers, not counting his 3, were occupied, and bookings were solid. He was even shaken down for a piece of the action by some local biker gang. But since his dad had some military ties, those goons suddenly went missing and not a single person, including law enforcement cared. And with them gone, business began to boom. Rent per room was $200 per night and $300 during skiing season or the Opening of fishing season. So here my friend was at 35 with absolutely no debt whatsoever and and bringing in 2.5M a year. I think he would retire right?

An interesting idea, good for emergency housing, but it wouldn’t meet building code locally and flat roofs don’t hold up well in climates which receive heavy snowfall.

this things can sit under 10 other containers...Doesnt seem like a few feet of snow would be a problem

@@sea2959 These structures would be shipped inside of some gigantic crate, not stacked directly one atop another. The crate would distribute the direct pressure onto the perimeter. Also, when it's shipped, the structure is not in it's final, unfolded position, the joins where the roof folds up would be especially vulnerable to leakage. I grew up in a house with a flat roof and the slightest vulnerable spot in the middle of a flat roof will cause it to fail eventually. Our house was only 14 years old when we had to put on a new, pitched roof. Go shopping when there have been big storms and you are likely to encounter buckets trying to catch drips from ceiling leaks. Go ahead and get one of these folding structures if you want, it's just isn't engineered for standing up to heavy snow pack and rain for decades, it's designed for temporary use, like an onsite work office on a major construction project which will be hauled away when the project is done.

Very clever. One potential issue might be a musty odor. I owned a camper that expanded and folded back up. It was roomy, nice, but there was a very bad musty, damp smell. No matter what we did when it was reopened after folded up could remove the odor.

@@benjaminviers1082 I have seen enough "funny" video where people fall or walk through walls of us houses. You try that here you are hospitalised instantly. Majority of houses there is a bit of plywood, plasterboard, spit and best wishes. If your lucky you don't have to put a new roof on every 20 years, roofs here are for a minimum of 30 years just fine and easily reach 60 or 70 years. Houses in the USA or considered really old if they are 100 years old, guess why... I live in a house build in 1906, and it's quite common. Just deal with it, USA houses are what you call "temporary housing" here. It just needs to look really big and luxuries on the outside but if you look a bit better it's just rubbish.

Wouldn't want to live in it full-time, but what a fantastic temporary concept for the homeless, survivors of hurricanes, people fleeing political tyranny etc. FEMA should be on to this.
