So bizarre I was just listening to that yesterday!! I loved that Stevie Ray Vaughn played on it as well. A little known fact. I've been working on Ashes To Ashes.

So weird! My aunt and uncle and I look for bass covers of songs... they love Billy Joel. Last week Uncle Jim wanted to hear ashes to ashes and we found it here! 😉I found a bass cover of Zanzibar today...follow cover solutions to. Today Uncle Jim said he wanted to hear China Girl... told him I couldn't find a good bass cover of it to save my life... and now 7 seconds ago...TROY! again...love ALL his covers

SRV played most of the guitar on the Let's Dance album. Bowie saw SRV on the Monteaux show where he got booed off stage and cut his set early. Bowie was so impressed with his set that he called and asked if he would play on Let's Dance. SRV being booed at the Monteaux is still one of the strangest things I've ever seen in music.
@Bacopa683 жыл бұрын
This isn't my favorite off Let's Dance, though I gotta give props to Nile Rodgers wranging in Stevie Ray Vaughan. The album would have been worse without him. And if you're an SRV fan you should really check out his last appearance in a music video. It's in the the video for "First we Take Manhattan" by Jennifer Warnes. Warnes achieved fame by singing two Oscar winning songs for "An Officer and a Gentleman" and "Dirty Dancing", but she got her start as as a backup singer for Leonard Cohen. She later became an a arranger and production assistant for Cohen. Jennifer Warnes used her fame to produce an all-Cohen album to introduce him to a generation that missed him.

Trademark driving Carmine bassline. The part starting at, "She says, ssshhhh..." with SRV's solo coming on top a few measures later is my favourite. Proper goosebumps stuff.

I was never a big Bowie fan but always liked this song. In addition, the 80s nostalgia this song and album evokes is almost overpowering. I remember when the video first dropped on MTV and watching it with my friends back then. I liked Bowie's final album, it's artsy and kind of creepy at the same time. His loss was a big one.

'Visions of swastikas in my head'. I've always thought that signature bass line part of this song perfectly fits with this lyric or visa versa. The rock steady on the beat feel evokes an invading army marching down the road. And then SRV's guitar starts to muscle in building up the sinister feel and hardly a blues bend in sight. I was just about to relearn this song and opened up KZbin to find a lesson and here you are! Thank you Troy. :)

Just talked to my wife about this concert about what stood out about it other than the performance and she was thinking the same thing. Killer tone! I read in SRV's biography Texas Flood by the incredibly knowledgeable Alan Paul that when David brought in Stevie, Carmine Rojas was worried that Stevie was "just a blues guy" who couldn't read music. Eventually Carmine was impressed with Stevie's intuition, among other things.
@TJH31133 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Very cool story. It was a shame he got let go before the tour, according to Wikipedia, for excess drug and alcohol use. He died way too soon.
@Tracer9GTRider83 жыл бұрын
@@TJH3113 It's a shame that wiki says that. Stevie agreed to the tour because his band was supposed to be the opener. When they told him that was never an offer, only an insinuation, he wasn't happy. Then they told him he couldn't talk to press about his own band or music. This is right when Epic was about to release his debut album Texas Flood and his agent explained to him that folks who like his music *might* discover him through Bowie but that's no guarantee. So with all of that, Stevie himself called Bowie's people and said, "When you see David tell him I quit" and they did their own tour instead. There were substance abuse issues, but that mostly came into play with his wife Lenny disrupting rehearsals because she didn't feel Stevie was getting his due. That created a lot of tension so they had to get her out of there! The great thing about the biography is it's told by people who were actually there throughout his entire career. People who were first-hand witnesses to all of this. I happened to be at his last ever show at Alpine Valley in WI. It was absolutely shocking to hear of his unfortunate death. He was clean & sober and playing better than he ever had!

Have you considered doing the title cut? IIRC it has a nice snappy element throughout much of the song.

Hey Troy, Another splendid rendition on that punchy Spector! Love the tone. You may have mentioned it previously, but did you modify it? This Bowie tune has such momentum, I’ve always enjoyed it. Driving bass line, slashing guitar, fun lyrics….shhhhhhh. As I recall, the video sparked controversy for it’s racy beach scene. I’m one that enjoys your dialogue, describing the bass minutiae, pointing out interesting bits, and sharing your views. You may not be entirely comfortable with your verbal contributions but, I think I speak on behalf of your followers in saying keep it up.

Thanks Bryan. Yes, I did the same modifications to this bass that I did with the Legend - MightyMite HAZ Clone Preamp and EMG Alnico p/u's. The alnico p/u's were an unintentional discovery. They have a smoother high-end and seem to bring out the mids a bit more than the ceramic magnet EMG's. The bass actually sounded decent as it came and I'll post a video soon featuring it in its original state. Thanks so much for the very kind words, Bryan. I greatly appreciate them. Take care!

@@TJH3113 you know the formula to determine how many you need right? Take the number of guitars you currently own and plus one.

have you covered Too Shy - Kajagoogoo ? Released same year as Let's Dance.

I started working on that a while back, but there was a serious tuning issue with it. I even asked a friend to pitch correct it, but he could only get it close. I wound up putting it aside. Maybe I'll pick it back up at some point.

I’m sure it’s not the Bowie you were looking for.. I will surely work my way back around to the Guild at some point… And the Ibanez too!

I am Japanese I also play Electric Bass Guitar Good performance and helpful By the way, what manufacturer is the bass you are playing? The grain of the wood is also beautiful.

Hello and thank you. This is the original Spector Pulse bass which only came is two colors a Cinder (this color) and Grey. They came out with a second Pulse line which was the same bass, but had more color options… and were more expensive.

Thank you for your reply. It was the base for Spectre. It looks and sounds great. I also use the Thunderbird in the back. It's Epiphone though. I'm sorry that my English is difficult to understand. I'll continue to watch it.

That Spector really punches! Does it sound as good stock?
@TJH31133 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think it sounds pretty good. I could definitely get a usable sound out of it as it was when I bought it. The biggest difference is in the highs, which were a little more glassy with the stock pick ups and preamp. I actually did a couple songs with the bass when I first got it, along with a little review and I will get around to posting that soon.

@@horrorshowbass My Legend is my favorite Spector, followed by the NS2A’s. The Euro and Woodstock basses get played the least.

@@TJH3113 @TJH3113 I was listening to Grace Jones "Slave to the Rhythm" and didn't know who Trevor Horn was... I've listen to YES for years but not to the extent of knowing the different line ups... IMO a true musician isn't locked in to a particular style and are willing to branch out to master their instrument. I say that to state that I appreciate your diversity in taste... You love playing the bass and it shows

Where do you still get your hazlab clones? I cant find them anywhere
@TJH31133 жыл бұрын
I got this from a small store in Florida through Reverb. I have “HAZ” set as a keyword, so I’m alerted when one comes up for sale. SNC and BAZ both make some really good clones as well.
