I've been to China twice. Independant, not in an organised tour. I did not see anything of a vicious, brutal, totalitarian dictatorship. I have just returned from 3 weeks in China and was surprised at what I saw: their infrastructure is modern and technologically advanced, its cities are clean and organised (I did not see any homeless people at all), the people seem prosperous and happy with their lives and the Chinese people were very warm towards all us and the group we were travelling with. Mao Tse-tung famously stated that, "political power comes out of the barrel of a gun." That statement can be found in his "Quotations from Chairman Mao", also known as "The Little Red Book." Mao realized how true that statement is so his communist government criminalized possession and ownership of firearms. If the subjugated oppressed/repressed masses of China ever gained access to firearms, the communist government would be overthrown. Same is true all over the world, in all these police state dictatorships.
