China's stupidest infrastructure projects are absolutely insane. You'd think a country with a struggling economy would be more careful with its money, but you'd be wrong. Here are some of the most ridiculously stupid infrastructure projects in China.

Bro China is literally how I treat my Cities Skylines world, literally develops new areas and spends all the money on infrastructure projects, while ignoring the fact that my city has massive traffic/crime problems, and how half of it is abandoned because no one wants to live there

My dad visited china in the late 80's. In some rural town (i think, not sure where) he had to take a dump, and the only "toilet" was a long, ditch- or trench-like hole in the ground, over which you would squat and do your business, next to strangers. What made the experience even more memorable for my dad was that in those parts, in those times, many people hadn't even seen a white person, so naturally the whole village gathered around to watch a white man take a shit. 👍

@@AaronSoul725 XD im sorry but thats all he told me about that particular event. Though another one was when he had dinner with some family (possibly in the same town/village), every time he finished his meal, the granny who did the cooking would fill his plate up again, cos an empty plate meant that you want more. I Don't know how many full plates he ended up eating. :d also, when visiting the Great wall, he had to like actually run from kids selling souvenir coins, cos he made the mistake of buying one. I'm sure he had a lot more fun experiences in addition to those, I gotta ask him for more. :D

Some people must learn from the school of hard Knocks. For some, its a bachelor's degree. For others, a master's. CCP is going back for its doctorate in "don't f around with mother nature." But its very sad its education is paid for in the lives of its citizens. No wonder their social movements are so somber. The people don't want to do anything and they do not want to bring anyone else into their world.

@silvercat18

My company bought some soccer balls that were made in china. They fell apart really quickly and on closer inspection had been sewn up with simple garden string rather than a decent waxed thread - so as soon as they took any pressure or got wet, they tore apart. China's quality control seems to be all about things "looking ok" and then not being around to take the blame when they inevitably fall apart. This applies to the smallest soccer ball and the largest building, all put together for purely visual inspection and in fact made of the least suitable materials available.

I used to work with Chinese colleagues (outside of China), and some of them constantly bragged about how great China is, how advanced technology in China is, etc. One day, another colleague (not Chinese) sarcastically asked them "if China is so great, why don't you go back there?", they clammed up and tried to change the subject. And then there was the one honest Chinese guy who seldom talked about China at all and clearly felt embarrassed about their non-stop bragging. His answer to the question was that he's not going to return to that shithole for the rest of his life. They probably all think the same as well, just too prideful to talk about it.

As shocking as those bathroom videos were, I must inform the internet that those ARE NOT the worst bathrooms you will find in China. I went to inland China, Yunnan province (in 2001) and our bus stopped at a 'lunch stop' where there was a 'bathroom' next to a place that sold soup. We go into the bathroom and there were no deep holes to receive the poop. Nope, just a trough that went from one end of the room to the other with a drain on one end for EVERYONES business. Of course, the drain got pugged and with no one maintaining it, the poop just piled up. Eventually, the entire trough was filled and people just kept using it. By the time we got there, every spot where one could squat on the trough was filled up to bum-level with poop. And since there was no toilet paper, people had used the walls to 'clean' off their hands. So now imagine walking into a room with 20 feet of feces piled 18 inches high, with poop on the walls, then add the beautiful image of maggots EVERYWHERE making the whole thing look like it was moving. Good times.

Bit of an unfair comparison as that knowledge was promptly lost for over 1000 years until the mid 1800s, and even parts of America and UK had no plumbing until the 1950s. They are a century behind, not several millenia.

@@gildedpeahen876 How is it an unfair comparison? 99% of the Roman Empire wasn't "plumbed". People look at ancient Rome and just mentally copy-paste that template all over millions of square kilometers. Most of the rural Roman Empire looked like most of the rural world has since... forever. Even in the most advanced modern countries there's no area that's completely modern. Infrastructure is extremely hard. China has problems, US has problems, everywhere has problems. But these kinds of simplistic comparisons so someone can say "ah it's better in this time period, in this place" aren't very accurate.

On the plus side if the implosion of the tunnel is rapid enough, you are near the entrance and car you are driving is not made in China ie its sealed even relatively well, there is chance the tidal wave will flush you out of the tunnel.... but that takes lots of luck so i would not count on it. I worked in china and still have friends that work there. We´d talked to people that work in the government. The problem comes down to how their system works. Local officials have a yearly growth rate they have to meet. If they do not meet the set growth rate, someone else will replace them. And there are a few ways to do it. They could have factories produce, sell, export more, they could have more commerce/trade/service, or the easiest way: Build thing. Construction projects are the fastest and easiest way to perk up the stats. And, of course, there is also corruption in those contracts. So the video shows the results.

One of my delights when visiting China was watching the locals exit escalators. Invariably they take one step off, stop and look at which way to go. People get fed into them from behind like a conveyor belt, and at worst end up in a pile of people struggling to get to their feet. I saw one such of around 12-15 people in Hong Kong. Maybe these escalators have been built in rural China by the government to help the local Nongs develop their escalator skills before migrating to First and Second Tier cities?

In my hometown, the city opted to import steel and components from China to build a bridge since it was so much cheaper than other bids. The whole thing was deemed unsafe, with the steel being substandard and many of the components not built to spec. In the end, the project came in massively over budget with everything having to be rebuilt. So much for the economics of "made in China" bargain infrastructure.

We have elevators in the middle of the city that break down the same week roads are peppered with gravel for the winter (more environmentally friendly alternative to salting the roads.) They are very sensitive to this.

Nothing wrong with the woods. If you go number 1 it'll sink into the ground, if you go #2 then dig a hole then bury it. Fairly sanitary. Just need a water source to wash up. If you have wood ash, you can also use it to give you hands a deep clean. That'll kill ALL bacteria, lol. Might be a bit rough though for people with soft skin. The bathrooms in the video on the other hand were probably crawling with disease, and maybe even parasites.

@@Xbalanque84 You're right. Dictators are absolutely powerless without all the serfs to follow their orders. The proportion of people on the strong narcissistic and psychopathic spectrum is only a few percent. If we as humanity managed to exclude them from any position of power, a lot would already have been gained. Even police officers in some countries have to pass certain tests because they are allowed to exercise a certain amount of power. But a ice cold psychopath can become a politician without people seeming to care at all what kind of personality that really is. That urgently needs to change now. For this to happen, however, human culture must change worldwide. Humanity needs to get out of this damn slave mentality.

@keythvance1 I was there 14 years. It depends where you go. Of you stick to the touristy/ foreigner frequented places it is fine. Move outside of the big cities, or even into the places in big cities where foreigners don't generally go and things get rougher. In the smalle cities and towns, it can get pretty brutal. Then, in the truly rural areas, things get very basic and dire. But those places are where you come across some of the most wonderful people.

in 2012 the train to Guangzhou toilet was just a sheet of thin metal with hole in it, The metal floor moves and buckles as you step onto it and you see into the hole the rocks going under the train. Like the floor will fall with you on it onto the train tracks.

I just like how for the 2 toilets, the one on the right has a matching lid. The one on the left has the same lid as the right toilet, but on a different shaped toilet bowl. So they got the same seat lid, but they couldn't get the same toilet
