Hearing this since young 吃苦耐勞🤢🤮and it never sat well, imagine deliberately make your kids suffer just so they’ll become “stronger”. What I learned was to endure it, I stayed the same, never stronger. Mentally I was numb and felt like I eventually adapted to the pain… but I didn’t learn any useful skills from enduring bitterness/ suffering. What made me learn better, was very few compassionate adults who didn’t choose to raise their voice when they felt frustrated at educating me. If I didn’t understand, they’ll teach again without calling me stupid for not learning the same way my peers did. They never called me “impatient”and didn’t force me to endure my struggle. When I expressed my struggle, they didn’t invalidate my feelings. They acknowledged it and taught me another way. There are many strategies & techniques to discipline & to educate, I’m thankful for those who never used physical punishment or verbal insults when they were teaching me. When I made some mistakes, they noticed my weakness, and helped me improve with their compassion. That was how I learned useful skills & the job I have now that I love, not because of yelling and belittling, not because of “oh your teachers called you “idiot”? Good on them, they should spank you to teach you more lesson too!” .

As an ABC, “eat bitterness” means something like “you lived a cuddled life, hence you’re useless”. And being useless is one of the greatest insults in Chinese culture. On the other hand, if you say “I’ve eaten bitterness” it implies you aren’t pampered and have cut your teeth on life’s suffering. It’s kind of a flex that you’re not a wuss.
@Novastar.SaberCombat
@Novastar.SaberCombat Жыл бұрын
Humanity has a way of destroying itself through false "flexing". Even the most "useful" individual can immediately be made non-sequitur by placing them in the wrong environment. What good is a farmer as a scientist? What good is a scientist as an actor? And what good is some 80 year old as a "sexual dynamo'? Society is stupid when it attempts to decide who is "useless" and who is not.

As many others are saying, this is a sentiment many people all over the world share. I would speculate living under a regime like China's would probably exacerbate these feelings of despair somewhat compared to democratic societies that are more open. I think there's a lot of "doommerism" occurring among younger people for a wide variety of reasons but in large part our systems/leaders in so many sectors are failing to adjust with the times and face the crises that they need to face. Without some really profound changes to some fundamental structures in our societies we're not going to be able to have much for the future.
@karinefonte516
@karinefonte516 Жыл бұрын
The greatest sentiment, I'd say, is that as in China the decisions in general, regarding all aspects of governance, are taken not with the citizens of all echelons in mind, but only the upper classes. Laws and policies are design depending on what bankers and financiers need, agriculture is incentivized, or supressed, depending on heavy-weight traders' insterests (I'm looking at you, Netherlands), even colleges and education are less informative and more conformative than ever (left or right, it doesn't matter as long as the young don't question, or question the way it's interesting and profitable to that very few). Authoritarian or semi-democratic in any level (hardly any country has a full democratic system), very fast or slowly, it's happening. for real or perceivedly.

Absolutely. It is worst in China because their demographic situation is the worst in the world. But nearly every country on the planet right now is seeing their baby-boom generation retire, to be replaced by smaller generations. So the world is experiencing an insatiable demand for laborers, positions that were once filled by the now-retiring generation. People that remain in these positions are often hostile towards new workers too, because for once in their life they have bargaining power with their employer. So you have a relatively smaller generation of young people that were told they need a lot of education to succeed in the world, only to realize that their education isn't in demand, and if they try to take a job that is "beneath them", they will be met with hostility. With labor being more expensive, everything in turn becomes more expensive, pissing everyone off. The sentiment is bad because people can smell something is burning; I would reckon the world a decade from now is going to be a very different place.

@@MrsKwan-jp8lr It doesn't exactly help that educators basically teach these future adults to scorn the working class for being "uneducated." It's absolutely horrible in the West, AFAIK, because here, it's further motivated by political demographics (most educators are uber-liberal nutjobs).

I hope the average Chinese person realizes that it's not America that is their enemy. We went through this too. It is the rich and their own government that has done this to them. As my mom first fled the country over several decades ago, so my whole family did not have to suffer like the rest of Chinese who were still staying in their homeland. 1911 Revolution did not bring peace; 1948 brought terrors and prosecutions so my mom seeked a opportunity and fled. She endured hardships all her life but she gave her children freedom and opportunity that I owed to my mom even though she was a traditional lady who could eat bitterness for her own life. However, she couldn't see her kids suffer so I think if all parents will rise up to seek opportunities to feed their families then they should leave their comfort zones to seek employments in rich countries or develop skills enable to earn a living everywhere. “Suffer patiently” Every time i watch videos from serptentza and laowhy i am thankful i was born and live here in the US. The poor in my state do not compare to the poor around the world. I can imagine how people would react if we had to go through the great depression again. Bet you 90% of my own countrymen don’t even know what that was, what it means. I first learned about it in highschool, but seeing the videos and those pictures of the lines, all the people suffering, gas stations with “NO GAS” signs out front - they have been burned into my memory.

Imagine seeing others invest everything into the real estate bubble only to see it crumble with them left with nothing. You think how smart you were to save your money in the Regional Developement Bank and then find out you can't access your own money for an unknown length of time. Then your employer begins delaying salaries, citing lower orders and a hard economy. Maybe you even lose your job and resort to food delivery, something already overcrowded with too many workers. It's a downward spiral where I can only see two routes: dispair or revolt.

I had a dream about this a year ago. People were in lines to eat scraps in China. Begging on the streets and only allowed to buy so much from shops that barely could feed them that day. Then you had some of them very rich. Their kids able to have candy, eat what they wanted and go to fairs but everyone else is barred from participating. Honestly it shocked me. Because i never thought that could be a thing. How a leader can do this to people for no absolute reason especially now. My heartbreaks for these people. It truly does!

At least for the Japanese, they were able to overcome their devastating situation and become a much more successful and democratic society. China can certainly do the same if they can "change their current form of government". That, unfortunately looks like an unattainable goal.

When thats happening you know for sure the usa and many countries in the area will be passively supportive of that and even encourage it further emboldening the democry movement there to take over control, thus a civil war there would mean the ccp side will always lose in the end. @LadieKatie this is true I have been living there for 20 years and right around 2006 is the time where they cleaned out Subic Bay and basically kicked the US Navy out of the Philippines. Duterte was definitely anti having the US military in their nation even though they're the only ones that were really protecting them. The Philippine military can handle internal conflicts like with the Muslim groups in the southern part of the country. But they're maybe is practically nil and their air force is a dilapidated aging farce of an organization. So since my wife and son are there I am glad that they have now opened up four different naval bases there. It's gonna be the only thing that will be able to keep open the malacca Strait and the bashi channel which are the main trade routes of all goods leaving and coming into that area. When I was there in the early 2000s they had the US military there working in conjunction with the Philippine army to clean out the terrorist training groups in southern Mindanao. I'm glad they're there and so are many Filipinos. There's always the anti American pro communist league that doesn't want them there but screw them. Glad to see that bongbong Marcos has a head on his shoulders and those that the US is still their greatest ally

Maybe he doesn't know much about the structure of Chinese officialdom or the advantages and disadvantages of Chinese organ of authority. He just records and presents what he has seen and what he has found. But who told you that you have to be an "expert" to see the thrth in China? And what is your definition by "expert?" I beg to differ. There are many different degrees of difficulty and many different kinds. For example, everyone, from the ditchdigger to the college professor, tends to think their job is difficult. The Wall Street broker makes at least ten times what an ER nurse makes, does he have it ten times harder? The life of the Chinese (and the Russians, and in many other countries) is made far more difficult by their government). One could, quite credibly, argue that the lives of US citizens are made far more difficult by their politicians, but this pales by comparison with many other countries. (Although this does not excuse our own politicians, nor us for permitting them to behave as they do.) For a real eye-opener, look at Nogales, Arizona and contrast it with Nogales, Mexico. Same climate, same soil, etc., even same DNA in many cases, but the difference between the two towns, separated only by a border, is night and day. Now think about why that would be the case.

Be living in China is not only a simple torture but also a HUGE challenge to overcome, like every single day you have to double check one thing: Are my humanity and mankind still there? How do I keep them as much as I can? As a Chinese person, you just simply lose the ability to fight for something bigger than surviving in messed up conditions, if you are different, people around will always take the lead to stab at your back and knock you down because you have different opinions - Chinese people choose to be living that way, the CCP and Chinese people just made a perfect match. I hope one day Chinese people will realize something goes 100% wrong and try to make some fresh moves to change or this will never proceed to happen.

Eating bitterness reminds me of a rather famous chinese story. The emperor Goujian, after a crushing defeat to another king, was allowed to go back to his kingdom and rule, but had to serve the king he lost to for several years. He quickly employed skilled politicians in his rule and lived as the peasants did, sleeping on sticks and tasting gall, all so he never forgets the humiliation he endured. He never splurged on kingly riches either. During that time he plotted revenge against his kingly master. His motivation for tasting bitterness was revenge and humiliation, but it was entirely voluntary. He never wanted to lose sight of what was important to him, not that he believed suffering was an inevitable part of life. He was the king too, but chose not to indulge. I think eating bitterness then is a stark contrast to the meaning it has today.

As a Nietzsches once said: "What if pleasure and displeasure were so tied together that whoever wanted to have as much as possible of one must also have as much as possible of the other. You have a choice in life: either as little displeasure as possible, painlessness in brief or as much displeasure as possible as the price for an abundance of subtle pleasures and joys"

It reminds me of the English expression: "It's a bitter pill to swallow." A harsh reality that you have no choice but to accept.

That is still only temporary though. I think "grit your teeth" is a better equivalent, or maybe "suffer in silence."

@@cattysplatGritting your teeth or suffering in silence could be called temporary too. In any case, those would also be good, but my point was that the English expression includes "bitter" like the Chinese, so it reminded me of the phrase. It still has the feeling of "enduring" a bad experience beyond your control, so I think it's also appropriate.

Years ago my mainland coursemate popped back home for some reason and came back and told me I would get a job easier in China, because I'm tall 🤔🥴😅. They were literally hiring the tallest candidates just to easily differentiate them - because so many students return with degrees from western universities (although many of them seem to plagiarise or have their submissions ghost written, having language checked or even marked many of them in a past life) but she ended up studying for a masters and her husband had a PhD in chemical engineering. Another friend from the mainland did a bachelors in business and then TWO Masters at separate universities in the UK just to try and collect more XP before returning home. There are so many graduates that more and more mainland students are just hoarding qualifications in a vain attempt to further push themselves up the pile when they return home...
