I've been using the Real-Steel Bushcraft Plus Convex in 14c28n for a little over a month now. Shoulder season late fall provides ideal timing with good insights for making outdoor performance assessments. Here in Alaska... the uses for a knife of this genre and class in September thru November are mainly fishing, hunting, camp, utility, and around the house tasks or play. Settings and conditions will widely vary. So far in this genre and class my preferences are Garberg 14c28n stainless, Varusteleka Terävä Jääkäri Puukko (have both in 80CrV2 and Stainless *likely X50CrMoV18) and Bark River Springbok II cpm3v. All these are extremely useful, trustworthy all arounders. The Real-Steel Bushcraft Plus Convex in 14c28n caught my eye a while back, but were unavailable here in USA... so funny thing is, I ordered from a European site with great pricing plus shipping terms/rates. So far I have to say it is a winner with nice fit & finish and places categorically well up to and performance wise as a truly competitive convex option for going mild to wild. Not experiencing any hot-spots. I find the handle very well done and near perfectly aligned/fitted. Jimping is quite functional and satisfactory as far as comfort. Spine is @ 90. Tip strength is very good. Multi-purposed mounting sheath is of good molded kydex, tie fastened or removable, inside the fabric belt sheath, w/ accessory pouch. Overall a fine, dependable, well thought out, all-arounder package at the asking price.

the post is a little bit older, hoping you steel read it or get a message: I have the RS bushcraft pro with a flat grind, but have the chance now to get it also with the the convex grind (it is even still available in scandi grind), however, I always struggle to see a distinct advantage of the convex grind, especially when taking steel material and the matters you cut into account. For batoning the convex has advantages, but for meat, especially lunges (dog food) I really prefer full flat or even a hollow grind (not available for the RS pro) - your thoughts?
@alaskaraftconnection-alask33972 жыл бұрын
@@WM-jy9dz Convex grind has some advantages. That said - other grinds (even hollow) have relevant advantages in their own right. I'll relate that grind 'snobbery' is not all that important. Good materials, overall geometries/design, good workmanship with consistency, proof-testing, tunability/sharpening maintenance, reliability, and user familiarity practices will achieve the upper hand vs. grind type. My Real-Steel Bushcraft Plus Convex in 14c28n is still going strong, and the sheath is still excellent. Here is an older video using the knife: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJyToJaGh8pmasU

@@alaskaraftconnection-alask3397 ha, that was a fast response - very appreciated. The 14C28N is one of the toughest steels out there, another reason why I think the difference between the flat grind and the convex grind is not so important for this specific knife; the blade is 4.5 mm thick, combined with the moderate length and the tough 14C28N even the flat grind should be strong enough for rougher tasks, with some advantages for meat / lunges processing. Interestingly, when ESEE listened to their customers who asked them to make the ESEE-4 also with a "better" steel they seemed to ignore the fact that S35VN is much more brittle than the 1095 (S35VN is indeed significant better wrt edge retention and wear resistance), and keeping the same grind and thickness some customers indeed broke the S35VN blade - for this knife changing the grind or at least the thickness when using a more brittle steel would have some merits IMO.
@alaskaraftconnection-alask33972 жыл бұрын
@@WM-jy9dz My experience with 14C27N trends the outdoor genre medium knife size mostly using MORA Garberg and Real-Steel Bushcraft Plus Convex. I do not consider these as 'over-build' class or type knives such as BK-2, Esee-5, etc. For this size/weight range, reasonable use, reliability, overall performance, low/easy maintenance, and at this general price point... I'd relate 14C27N fits the applications par for the course. Honestly, for most outings, my go-to in 14C27N 8-9 out of ten times will be Garberg. However, when I want similar loadout and regarding suitability nod to convex (like hunting applications ) I'll run with Bushcraft Plus Convex. Having realistic expectations for 14C27N plus good blade geometry and good handles it's hard to go wrong.

i would like to see more attention to sheaths of the knives you talk about.. to me that's an important aspect of the knife. i think by the looks the real steel has a great sheath, lots of cary options, kydex and nylon, little pouch there..
@garrettferrell68213 жыл бұрын
As a lefty,I definitely agree..it’s always nice to know what type of sheath comes with a knife because being left handed there is a pretty good chance I might have to replace the factory sheath because most fixed blades come with right handed sheaths.if it comes with a nylon or leather sheath,I know I’m gonna have to replace it because nylon is unacceptable for me and if it’s leather I know it’s right handed.Its always a big plus for me when a knife comes with an ambidextrous sheath.otherwise I’m gonna have to add $20-$60 on the price of the knife..not only that but even some knives that come with ambidextrous sheaths just don’t make the cut for me..take ESEE knives for example,they just don’t cut it for me without the molle attachment.using the belt clip that comes with ESEE knives makes the knife ride to high on your belt and leave the handle poking into your ribs.with the molle attachment you can obviously attach it to molle webbing but you can also use it on your belt which allows the knife to hang down several inches lower that the belt clip allows..even with the molle attachment,their sheaths just aren’t as good as their older models because they went from kydex to injection molded plastic.luckily,they still use kydex on the Junglas sheath..it’s nice to have an idea about sheath’s materials and quality before buying a knife

You guys didn't bring up the sheath its way better than Mora's option also why not sharpen it as you have the Mora. Its kind of hard for you guys cause ya get so much knives in for review and ya own so many so I know that's gotta be tough. I'm not saying you're being deceptive AT ALL I like your reviews😉 IMHO being a knife lover who has used these budget friendly brands cause I'm poor the Real Steel IMHO gives you more for your money. I was a huge fan of the Garberg but over time I've come to realize the grind is actually way to abrupt . The convex will give you much more options of use with food prep and esp skinning an animal once ya hone that edge. I do agree the handle is to thin BUT its removable has storage space for fishing line and you could add liners or your own handle all together. We fall in love with brands and I think I was a fanboy for Mora which caused some bias which messed with my asssment of the Garberg. I've now been using the Ontario Blackbird Sk5 for over a year and have stopped using other knives cause the spear tip just works great. 154CM is great steal you guys should try the knife out its not perfect but I like it and have literally become one with the design.
