The problem was the space program was shut down due to costs and short sight by politicians. The truth was the space race advanced engineering and created massive amounts of money and growth. There is loads of technology used today that would not exist if it wasn't for the space race of the cold war era. The problem is if China was to build a space station on the moon and go full on they would overtake the world with technology and no one would be able to complete.

It landed on Von Karman crater, named after the aeronautical engineer who was a mentor to Qian Xuesen, a Chinese scientist who was one of the pioneer in US missile and space programme. Qian was a victim of McCarthyism in 50s and was house arrested for 5 years before he was deported to China. He later became the founding father of China's missile and space programme. Russia helped China. Chinese specialists came to Russia few times to take Russian/Soviet experience and technologies from Soviet moon programm (lunahod) as USSR did it yet in '60s. Also Russian engineers built some modules for their rover like energy or power system. But anyway well done China.
